In comparison some 50% were accredited to Armour Piercing Shot over the course of the war. From Jun to mid August 1944, british studies on the wrecks of 100 panzers put German losses from AP shot and HEAT rounds at 70%. Most Germans tanks lost were indeed to Allied tanks

Just because aircraft did not kill a lot of tanks does not mean they didn't kill any. But it does mean most Germans tanks were destroyed by other means. Google "operational research", you will find examples of detailed studies by Allied scientists done during the war which clear away many post-war myths about WWII.

The technology was not there at the time. This info is easy to find online or in recent books on Normandy.

The thing about German tanks is that they do not fight in a vacuum. In war Air, artillery, infantry and tanks play a combined role and the fact is that the combined arms of the US and British overcame the better German tanks because the other components of German combined arms were weaker. They had less effective artillery doctrine, no air support and most German divisions were not elite SS. The Allies were better in 2 areas (air/arty), equal in one (infantry) and weaker in tanks
Actually allied planes hampered German armoured MOVEMENTS more than they actually destroyed German tanks.
For example, during the battle of Normandy the numbers of German tanks actually destroyed by allied air power was less than 10% and more near 5%.
It was the fear of air raids that was more significant and the Germans took steps to try not to move in the open in broad daylight and to camouflage their tanks with tree branches and bushes etc.These tactics lessened the losses
These tactics may have minimized the German losses, but if your tanks are just standing around during daylight under camouflage, then they leave the battlefield half of the time to the enemy, who is free to concentrate his tank forces, wherever he gets a chance. As soon as your infantry is overrun by the enemy´s tanks and your supply lines are threatened, your tanks must move out, even in the daylight, when the enemy´s air force controlls the battlefield.
Besides the attacks of the allied air forces on the German supply lines were rather effective. A Panther, Tiger or Royal Tiger may have been superior to a Sherman or a Comet in a one-to-one-duell - bigger gun, thicker armor, longer range -, but without ammunition and gasoline even an elite crew could not fight any longer. Obviously the Wehrmacht had to abandon more or these heavy tanks, because they lacked fuel and spare parts, as they lost in battle.
Out of the 178 Panthers lost that the British physically analysed and examined during the Normandy battles, only TWELVE were lost to allied air power.

@randomperson300145 Against tanks that were entirely out of their class? Yes, in an open field. But the last model of the Sherman probably could've outperformed the latest model of the Pz IV. It had a better engine, more accuracy, the ability to fire on the move, and the M4 didn't burst into flames anywhere near as often (wet stowage). Armor and weaponry for the 2 were about the same, although it is worth noting that the Soviets themselves considered the 76mm M1 to be superior to their own 85mm.
Panther tank wasnt designd for such terrain. It was best in open steppe of russia. Its weak side and rear armor meant it was a bad decision to send them to aredens

@Joshw124 Panthers design was based upon T-34, the T-34/76 was only effective at the start of the war in 1942/43 it lost all it's credibility because the Germans got better tanks and anti tank weaponry. The T-34/86 was an improvement with a bigger turret and a larger caliber gun. However it still wasn't effective against Panther only that it was able to penetrate it's armor, if it was even able to get close enough which was a big problem.
@SMGJohn The t34 was only effective in 41, once 42 came they had heavy tank battalions along with up arming their Panzer 4s, the panther was deff better, and yea the t34 was mainly like a mass charge tank, total opposite of the tiger types and the panther. I still think the panther was way better. sure only about 6000 were made compared to a shitload of 34s, im all about quality, some r about numbers
@Joshw124 - One of crucial yet overlooked reasons German tanks such as the Panther were able to overcome Russian tanks was that German tanks (including earlier tanks such as the workhorse PzKw IV) had five-man crews, whereas the Russian tanks only had four-man crews. Unlike the Russians, the German tank commander did not have to perform a backup function and was free to focus 100% on his job of vehicle command and unit coordination. Also, all German tanks had radios, unlike the Russians.
@Joshw124 Panther is technically better. T-34 is much more spammable and sturdy, enabling a mass production. Also, spare parts and stuff were much easier t get for a T-34 than a Panther, due to the "simplicity" of the T-34.

Panzerkampfwagen Panther was a heavy tank, with a wight about 45 tons. Designed to take out enemy tanks, expensive and with a big mailfunction rate of its systems.
T-34-76 or 85 was with his 30 tons a medium tank. His primary fuction was to support the attack (infantry) but he also was able to kill Panthers.
The Panther was a Medium Tank by german Standerds. The Panzer 4 weights 25 tons, the panther 45. But by Allied standerds it wasa heavy tank. 9 Not including the Russians)

It seems to be something of a common myth that the only things the allies had on their side was air support. I would say that, rather than bombing the hell out of tanks, the allies bombed the hell out of the factories that made 'em.

The thing about German tanks is that they do not fight in a vacuum. In war Air, artillery, infantry and tanks play a combined role and the fact is that the combined arms of the US and British overcame the better German tanks because the other components of German combined arms were weaker. They had less effective artillery doctrine, no air support and most German divisions were not elite SS. The Allies were better in 2 areas (air/arty), equal in one (infantry) and weaker in tanks

Actually allied planes hampered German armoured MOVEMENTS more than they actually destroyed German tanks.
For example, during the battle of Normandy the numbers of German tanks actually destroyed by allied air power was less than 10% and more near 5%.
It was the fear of air raids that was more significant and the Germans took steps to try not to move in the open in broad daylight and to camouflage their tanks with tree branches and bushes etc.These tactics lessened the losses

These tactics may have minimized the German losses, but if your tanks are just standing around during daylight under camouflage, then they leave the battlefield half of the time to the enemy, who is free to concentrate his tank forces, wherever he gets a chance. As soon as your infantry is overrun by the enemy´s tanks and your supply lines are threatened, your tanks must move out, even in the daylight, when the enemy´s air force controlls the battlefield.

Besides the attacks of the allied air forces on the German supply lines were rather effective. A Panther, Tiger or Royal Tiger may have been superior to a Sherman or a Comet in a one-to-one-duell - bigger gun, thicker armor, longer range -, but without ammunition and gasoline even an elite crew could not fight any longer. Obviously the Wehrmacht had to abandon more or these heavy tanks, because they lacked fuel and spare parts, as they lost in battle.

The allied command even stated that in general it would take 3-4 allied tank losses to take out a single german one. Respect to the allies for landing in france, fighting 25% of the german army while the war was decided on the eastern front.

It had a better engine, more accuracy, the ability to fire on the move, and the M4 didn't burst into flames anywhere near as often (wet stowage). Armor and weaponry for the 2 were about the same, although it is worth noting that the Soviets themselves considered the 76mm M1 to be superior to their own 85mm.

@Joshw124 Panthers design was based upon T-34, the T-34/76 was only effective at the start of the war in 1942/43 it lost all it's credibility because the Germans got better tanks and anti tank weaponry. The T-34/86 was an improvement with a bigger turret and a larger caliber gun. However it still wasn't effective against Panther only that it was able to penetrate it's armor, if it was even able to get close enough which was a big problem.

Unlike the Russians, the German tank commander did not have to perform a backup function and was free to focus 100% on his job of vehicle command and unit coordination. Also, all German tanks had radios, unlike the Russians.

Panzerkampfwagen Panther was a heavy tank, with a wight about 45 tons. Designed to take out enemy tanks, expensive and with a big mailfunction rate of its systems.
T-34-76 or 85 was with his 30 tons a medium tank. His primary fuction was to support the attack (infantry) but he also was able to kill Panthers.

@HybodusStudios Air support was useful, sure, but how accurately do you think you can drop a bomb on a target that's maybe 5 meters long while flying at 450 mph? It seems to be something of a common myth that the only things the allies had on their side was air support. I would say that, rather than bombing the hell out of tanks, the allies bombed the hell out of the factories that made 'em.
Don't get too feisty there. Germans didn't have it any better when it came to their bombers.
