This is a beautiful song that took me years to fully appreciate. Only now, looking back on mistakes I've made in my life, can I relate to the lyrics and they leave me with a strange ache.
A criminally underrated band. They were never anointed by critics, didn't play the rock game the way it was supposed to be played in the 90s. More power to 'em.
Please read! I am a singer/songwriter/guitar player and really want to be discovered! On my channel are some of my originals and some covers that I think if you like Gin Blossoms, you will like the ones I have done. Please check out my channel- I could really benefit from some feedback! Thanks! :)
This band went into the toilet after they screwed over Doug Hopkins, they treated that dude evil! They raped him seven ways from sunday, and every song they did after that just blew chunks. They suck so bad they put Hoover out of business.
my son was going in the navy, and yes he had the hey jealousy, on the back burner. she stayed and followed him, to santa cruz after the navy.. but he set her free and now I have a great daughter (in-law) and 2 beautiful g-babies.. but this song will always take back to the day's:):):)
@xthemightyseanx This is not that bad compared to flops in pop music... Collective Soul made good stuff early on. Their albums were always shit but songs like "December" rang a little bit.
i'm from England too, and quite a few of my mates love the Gin Blossoms. This song is a classic - beats all that manufactured pop pap flooding the airwaves on both sides of the pond - apologies for inflicting Cowell on you lot too....
i used to listen to this in the back seat of my dads 81 camaro, along with a song that i have never heard since, the chorus was something like "turn out the radio, turn out the light, put down the hairbrush..." the rest has been lost to me. anybody know what song it was?
Today back in 1993, co-founder of Gin Blossoms, Doug Hopkins, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age 32. The guitarist and songwriter was in a detox unit of St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona when he snuck out and bought a .38 caliber pistol. The next day Hopkins committed suicide. Rest in peace Hopkins, April 11, 1961 – December 5, 1993.
@SpectreRSG I was not aware that today was the day of his death. I can only imagine how many more great songs the world would know if he were still alive. NME is one of my all time favorite albums.I was just playing this song on my acoustic which is what brought me here to the video. Thanks for the info.R.I.P. Doug.
New Miserable Experience is one of the best albums of all time. Yes that's what I said. No it won't show up on any list by Rolling Stone or Spin or Vh1 but that doesnt mean shit. Great rock and roll
@Majora99 I agree with you.I too am obviously a big fan of Gin Blossoms but I am actually surprised to see someone from the U.K. make that statement.I did not think they were very popular in England.
TUNE!!!!!!!! working away from home wiv 10 good lads,,,,,,this was always first on jukebox after work and would always lead in2 mad frenzy of ale and music,,,sum of the lads are still married to their 1nite stands,,lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great song,,great memories,,,, great times sadly passed ((((
I memorized this song back in high school because it as (1) awesome, and (2) in my vocal range. I really wanted to perform it at one of our choir concerts, but the teacher in charge didn't think it was appropriate. *sigh* I miss the good music from the '90s.
@assrod That's why you shouldn't rely on the radio to form your opinion of new music. The stations are working based on their own agenda's and are going to play music accordingly. It all comes down to the almighty dollar. There is some decent music out there but sadly, unlike my era, you have to look for it elsewhere. I never push a band but if you haven't already, take a listen to Band Of Horses "The General Specific" live at Amoeba Music. They're kinda new and they rock the song. Its great.
A lot of people wish music was like the 90s again - if you want a return to decent songwriting why not take a chance on RED DUST ROAD? "The past might be gone but something might be found to take its place." Yeah probably the fall of the music industry. What the hell happened?! Nobody makes good stuff like this anymore that's for sure.
@larrygentry yeah, you're right. The album "New Miserable Experience" was one of my favorites of all time for like 5 years growing up. But once the guitarist killed himself, they really never managed to put out any other music like this. This album was undoubtedly the peak of their career, it's a shame they had to crash and burn the way they did.
@BloodEagle729 I just commented on this on another video. Doug Hopkins was the co-founder of the band and wrote most of their "hit" songs, which the band used and gained fame from, even after Doug's death. He had depression since childhood and then became an alcoholic which made an already bad situation, worse. He was a really sick man. The record label told the band, it's him or us so they booted him. Pretty shitty IMO. He needed support, not a kick in the teeth. Where's the loyalty???
@assrod On that note what bands/producers have had a serious impact on you as a person? Nujabes (RIP) changed my life and my perception of hip-hop as a real art form. The music of the 90's, especially groups like the Gin Blossoms, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Aaa the 90s I time when we didn't have a place to go but yet we could drive around town and have the cops chase us around looking for something that just might be found......cause gas was like 2 bucks a gallon and people had to be at home to use there phones and your Facebook was call AOL - you've got mail. Yup the 90s simple times. Good times.
@crackE262 Actually, dude, I wanna say gas was under a dollar when this song came out... I remember when gas hit $2.00 a gallon, I was in San Luis Obispo and was pissed. Twenty bucks for two gallons...
it's too bad they blew it with the video. they should've concentrated on the emo lyrics instead of the rock beat, and this could've been an interesting/affecting video. instead it's totally forgettable. i've already forgotten it.
@heddalee Who gives a shit about videos? The music is what counts. This is a great song.Yeah maybe the video will be forgotten but the entire album is great. How many acts can we say that about today?
My dad loved this cd when I was in elementary school. I'm 23 now and I'm glad to say I got to enjoy Gin Blossoms for many years. Especially living in Arizona.

Hey everyone I been tryin to make a 90's acoustic sound! I put a couple songs I wrote on my profile but I'm havin troubke gettin any feedback! PLEASE ANYONE OUT THERE CHECK IT OUT AN LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK PLEASE I WOULD APPRECIATE IT A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was hot in '94 I think. I remember crying the whole way back to Tucson after reconnecting with my high school love, knowing I would lose her again and I did.
All you have to do is look at the number of karaoke shows that are on T.V.to get an idea of the state of music today. People that had previously been singing into a hair brush while looking into a mirror are suddenly recording albums because the studio audience felt they sang a Mariah Carey cover better than any of the other contestants. While bands of skilled musicians play live gigs and remain usigned. Fucking pathetic.
@lob287 I have to say I agree 100%.I'll be the first to admit that some the contestants have good voices but I question wheather or not someone should get a record contract just because they can sing a cover and have a decent voice. I remember on David Letterman he was talking to some guest that mentioned American Idol and Dave said " Don't we have enough singers" and I think that pretty much sums it up. They all become pretty forgettable
@lob287 They call it 'reality T.V" But it's more like 'Alice in Wonderland.' What's most expedient and profitable for the Masters who control the Airwaves is what wins. Don't forget that the 'fuckin' establishment is still the Rule. If you have anything that might contribute to the real advance of humanity than you are quietly shunted as a 'wayback.' Maybe those who have recently been 'occupying Wall Street and other cities,' might actually have something important to say to us all.
@lob287 Read "Dirty Little Secrets of the Record Business: Why So Much Music You Hear Sucks" by Hank Bordowitz. it's on amazon. should clear things up
@lob287 That has been their exact plan for music since they tried to hijack the movement in the late 60s, it went from being free, for the people, by the people, to a corporate run profit machine. Not only that, but they saw what music did to the human mind, how it could change people, create movements, awaken peoples minds to things they would have never been awakened to without the music. They've turned it into a circus of wanna-be stars who care about their looks and fame than music.
This song reminds me of how the radio used to sound.......Ah the good old days!!!

Formula for getting 100 thumbs up on your YouTube comment:
1. Go to any music video that came out before 2000. (even if the song was bad)
2. Say something along the lines of "This is when we had real music, unlike today's pop shit". (even if the song is bad.)
3. ?????

@crackE262 Actually, dude, I wanna say gas was under a dollar when this song came out... I remember when gas hit $2.00 a gallon, I was in San Luis Obispo and was pissed. Twenty bucks for two gallons...
genericallyaccepted 1 month ago
@genericallyaccepted Uhhhhh, I think your math is a bit off. Are you paying $10/gallon?
jrdrag3505 1 month ago
@jrdrag3505 Hahaha, I meant ten gallons... Asshole ;)

it's too bad they blew it with the video. they should've concentrated on the emo lyrics instead of the rock beat, and this could've been an interesting/affecting video. instead it's totally forgettable. i've already forgotten it.
heddalee 3 months ago
@heddalee Who gives a shit about videos? The music is what counts. This is a great song.Yeah maybe the video will be forgotten but the entire album is great. How many acts can we say that about today?

This was also one of my dad's favorite albums, he died when I was 6, so it really reminds me of him.

My dad loved this cd when I was in elementary school. I'm 23 now and I'm glad to say I got to enjoy Gin Blossoms for many years. Especially living in Arizona.

My band grew up in the 90’s; check out our songs, we tried to bring the 90's back by writing music that pertains to the rock from that genre. Enjoy!

Fucking pathetic.
lob287 4 months ago 118
Agreed with you completely!
Mistertbones 3 months ago
@lob287 I have to say I agree 100%.I'll be the first to admit that some the contestants have good voices but I question wheather or not someone should get a record contract just because they can sing a cover and have a decent voice. I remember on David Letterman he was talking to some guest that mentioned American Idol and Dave said " Don't we have enough singers" and I think that pretty much sums it up. They all become pretty forgettable
Gibsonhb1 3 months ago
@lob287 these days all u need to do is know how to breathe and u can get a contract

@lob287 They call it 'reality T.V" But it's more like 'Alice in Wonderland.' What's most expedient and profitable for the Masters who control the Airwaves is what wins. Don't forget that the 'fuckin' establishment is still the Rule. If you have anything that might contribute to the real advance of humanity than you are quietly shunted as a 'wayback.' Maybe those who have recently been 'occupying Wall Street and other cities,' might actually have something important to say to us all.

people will always go back to class
wertpollwert 2 months ago
@lob287 That has been their exact plan for music since they tried to hijack the movement in the late 60s, it went from being free, for the people, by the people, to a corporate run profit machine. Not only that, but they saw what music did to the human mind, how it could change people, create movements, awaken peoples minds to things they would have never been awakened to without the music. They've turned it into a circus of wanna-be stars who care about their looks and fame than music.
