@mrpilot102 I have heard rounors of Maldivians converting to Buddhism, the religion of their pre Buddhist ancestors. I hope that this happens. It would be nice if after so many hundreds of years, Maldivians would come out of the fear and ignorance the imams and mullahs have put in them towards their ancient culture and revert back to that. I would also like to see them get rid of that Thaana Akuru script and use the original Dhives Akuru.

From what I understand, their are two forms of Islam in Maldives, the radical fundamentalist Islam and Islam that has been mellowed by the indigenous Maldivian culture. Simply they can take the letters of Dhives Akuru and all the markers, modify/modernize them, maybe add some new letters based on already existing letters or adopt a few from Sinhala alphabet for certain sounds such as kha, gha, chha, jha etc, diphthongs ai and au and a few other sounds and they will have a full modern Dhivehi Akuru script. Really, that Thaana Akuru script looks chicken scratches or chopped pieces of pasta.
