@TheYoimilan you can run it without a thermostat, but the ac system can then create ice and freeze up. then you'd have to shut if off a short time until it melted the ice.
SCOTTY:To make the story short, I took 2 cars into midas auto repair just for normal oil change, and I knew that car #1 's AC doesn't work(i asked to get it fixed and the did), but car #2's AC was perfect. After waiting for about 3 hours we left the shop and hot air started gushing out of car #2 the AC doesn't work now. Hot air rushes in even when it's turned off ..what are some things I could do to fix it? HELP PLEASE!!!!!
@pinknavy101 start by checking the refrigerant level to see if it leaked out, and check the clutch on the end of the ac compressor to see if they unplugged wires there.
hello scotty.. my airconditioner blows air that has an exhaust smells or under the hood smell.. not much but if leave it long enough the smell will get kindda strong... where should i start? and where does the airconditioner gets the air from if its not recirculate from inside the car ?
@NEVERENDS90 it gets the air from the vents at the hood, so it will suck in any smell from under the hood, like burning oil on exhausts from leaking gaskets. Scotty
Thank you for your videos, you have helped me many times in the past with my older car. This time I need help with a newer vehicle. I have a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe and I took it to a general repair shop because I get no cold air from the A/C. The shop says they cannot find anything wrong with the compressor or switches or fuses and the refrigerant is where it needs to be, take it to a specialist. Any ideas!? Thanks again!
@opticalgod I assume they knew what they were doing, so that means the pressures on the AC are normal and running, In that case, you have a problem inside the dash controls not letting the vent air move through the AC evaporator inside. complex stuff there, as it's all electronic, best to see someone who works on Hyundai AC vent systems unless you want to tear the dash apart and rig stuff to make the doors open for AC. I've done that before, but then again I've been messing with cars for 44 year
Scotty, I am impressed by some of your "hacks" that you have come up with. You work on old cars that people are willing to pay to keep running.
On the West Coast people simply buy a new car or deal without having the functioning.
At the dealership level where I come from, your actual mechanic fixes and bypasses would never be acceptable. These are things that I would do to my own or family members cars but never to customer cars.
@flanksteak2 Yea, well I give my customers a choice, either pay the often insane high price to fix computer crap designed by engineers with bananas up their rear ends, or save money and get a simpler system. And guess what, most decide simple and cheap these days. Scotty
I have a 2001 jeep cherokee and I have no cold air blowing out of the air conditioning system. I took it to a repair shop and they said the compressor is bad, which would be about $1,000 to replace. Air still blows out, it is just hot air. Will buying a switch be worth a try for my jeep?
@BlueBMuffinTV often a broken blend door inside the dash, try to get in there and open it up, I often wire em open with mechanic's stainless steel wire. Scotty
Scotty!!!!!!!!!!! Hi!!! good videos!!! congratulations!!! but, Could you add videos about how to remplace a/c hoses (suction, discharge etc etc) I dont know how to install them!! thank you for your greats videos!!
@scottykilmer Scotty, I have a 99 chevy malibu and the airconditioner only works on the setting of "2", it will only blow hot air on 1,3, 4,5. But when it is on "2" it blows cool air until it you come to a stop. And sometimes it will adjust itself from inside ac to the outside source. I have had the refrigerate levels checked and they seem to be good. Also have had a new compressor, dryer placed on it. Can you help me with what may be the problem. Thanks!
@donahuep2003 That's generally a control unit problem, chevys have nothing but problems with their control units. I've changed out tons of those things over the years. Scotty
@radiomanze tons of reasons can make em lose power, that's why I made this video to show how to bypass all that computer crap and wire it direct to a switch. Scotty
hi scotty, i have a 2001 nissan frontier and having a problem on the air conditioning, my compressor is constantly switching on and off, there are times that once you switch the engine and turn on the ac it takes a while before the compressor start running and it will only run for a few seconds and it will turn off. could you pls tell me or give me some advise how to fix it.
@rhnlsls certainly try my method here, after having the system checked for proper refrigerant level first, as low refrigerant can do that. But nissans often have computer ac problems that this video shows how to bypass. Scotty
Hello again scotty, i have a question about air conditioniners again, i have an old r12 that has never been retro fitted, how much would it cost to have it done roughly? is it possible that i do this myself at a cheaper cost? and are you fimiliar with freeze 12? i herd that it is basicly r12 but approved by the EPA? is this stuff any good? i appreacate what you do scotty thanks for all the tips you have given me in the past and i hope you will give me plently in the future! thanks!
@INS14466 I only use R 134a, it works fine. You put in an 80 percent load by weight, and 5 ounces or so of pag oil in most cars to retrofit em. Scotty
@scottykilmer thank you scotty i took my car to get the ac looked at and they told me it would cost around 500 dollars to do this?!?! are they trying to get over on me??
@scottykilmer thanks again if it helps its an 1988 mazda 626 and this guy dident even inspect it, he barly looked at it. i was asking him alot of questions about wut it needed and had him write down what i would need to put in to have it working and this is his list he wote out, keep in mind he dident hook nething up to my car and barly looked at it (rec. dryer, condensor & retro fit kit for r134)
@fourdoorchevelle High side is waay too high, you have serious restrictions inside the system, stuff is clogged up. Needs at least a new orifice tube and a full flush. scotty
hey scotty i have a tacoma, took it in to the shop they filled up with freon, but still no cold air, only made a small difference but couldnt really feel the kool air,so 2 years later took in to another shop and still the vacuum the freon, refillef up agiang and still no cold air?? one shop told that it has to replace the compressor, is that the problem ??? Thnkx
LOl fun-e but i had a vw jeta that the A/c clutch wouldn't engage,so i by pass the switch.. compressor did engage and got real cold air coming thru the vents for 10 minutes, then i heard a bang noise and the line or evaporator blew up LOL,,
@Zpe3ddyGonzalexx gotta make sure the fans are still blowing over the condenser and that the pressures don't get too high by putting gauges on em. there's no magic fix for AC, just lots of stuff to check. Scotty
@gng044 find if it has a pressure switch on it, they normally do, and wire that in line to the power, using a relay as those are small power switches and require relays to run stuff, you can't wire them direct. If you don't know how to wire a relay for power, pay a mechanic. Scotty
I'm no mechanic, but wouldn't this set up not allow the compressor to disengage when it needs to? If the head pressure in the high side line is too high or the refrigerant is low, the compressor should stop working so it won't damage any further components, not to mention the compressor itself. Am I correct? Maybe I'm missing something here................
@goesfastandfar this is a quick way to fix an AC system with electronic problems. If you worry about safety, then just wire this new system in line with a pressure switch. This way of fixing them beats the hell out of spending well over a grand in many new vehicles where the computer ac systems break down and dealer parts are insanely high. scotty
@scottykilmer Thanks for the VERY speedy reply Scotty. You're not only good, but fast and thorough too! Understood. Keep going with your very informative videos that give us average guys half a chance at saving some big bucks with great results! Bravo!
i change the ac accumulator and the orifice tube and the commperser works but stiil blows extreme hot air plz help me i dont know what els to do plz.SCOTTY PLZ
@xHDxBrooklyn1 run a pressure test of the system and see what the pressures are, high and low side. Then post those pressures and I can analyze it further, it's very complex. Scotty
hey scotty, My car AC turns on and usually runs well for about a minute, but then the compressor starts to turn on and off every second and then stays off. Will this fix my problem? The compressor is brand new.
@fmonsalv726 it may, or may not. If you have a switch or electrical problem, it can. But if it has an internal problem like a restricted expansion valve, then it won't. Put a set of gauges on it and see if the pressures are normal when you hot wire it from the battery first,. if they stay fine, then this will work. Scotty
I wouldn't recommend this approach; temperature of the evaporator is independent of system pressure, and a wet or overcharged system may run extreme pressures without ever getting very cold. Use the factory pressure switch, just hardwire from the Compressor clutch relay to the pressure switch, then to the clutch coil itself. This is how most older factory systems work anyway.
@10MickeyMouse There's more than one way to skin a mule, yes, you can use this approach, but mine works fine, I've done it for decades to save people money in old cars. Scotty
Hey Scotty, My air conditioner fan has 4 speeds. the fastest speed runs great. the next speed down is a big jump. I have to put my hand up to the vent and I barely feel it. the lowest 2 speeds doesnt blow anything out. What could be wrong?
@7ankss Often a bad expansion valve if it stops blowing cold when it gets hot outside (or a sign of low refrigerant--in such a case I always first just suck all the refrigerant out, and then fill it up with a factory weight of refrigerant, that often fixes it. ) Scotty
Your A/C high pressure system will be depleted to a point where NO CONSIDERABLE COOLING is taking place within 3 -10 minutes , after a leak develops - as the entire system is pressurized in a loop to or from the compressor that maintains the constant pressure.
Any stupidity related to a proposed leak in the refrigerant lines/system , especially while condensation is occuring - is as stupid as it gets. Any condensation in a A/C system , means there is a blockage or 1 or more of the sensors/switches isn't working to operate the vent doors etc. LEAK ? Not applicable to condensation.
On an older car , where you might not be able to even get any parts , this is a good way to restore a non-functional relay or temperature sensor. Meanwhile , somebody will always say stupid things like : " the system will no longer have the necessary oil with the refrigerant flowing". How they figure that while the compressor is running in a closed high pressure system , is their own little mystery. But it was a good thing that they actually had SOME brain activity.
Hey Scott you kick ass! I have a question, my ac compressor clicks very loudly in the morning when i go to work, and it does it again when i drive back from work. It only does it when the car has been parked for a few hours. Once the initial loud click happens, then the other clicks sound normal like if i turn the ac on and off i can hear a normal click. Any thoughts?
@tmz90 : It sounds to me like you have a worn clutchplate on the compressor , that - when it engages the pulley cold or the friction surface is not worm. When the friction surfaces are both worm , the engagement is also different. Plus , when it clicks loudly , (cold) , the compressor itself has been sitting still , until the clutch engages the spinning pulley , which is attached full time to the drive belts. Check the thick or thinness of the clutch & pulley mating surfaces. SB 1/8" + .
Hey man my saturn vue ac only works on speed 1 but speed 1 dont work the little fans i movet to 2 3 4 and the fan work but the ac goes off why do u think this is
Awesome! Funny how I was looking on the net at the exact part you were holding. I found this thing wrapped around the evaporator. Trouble is that I've changed engines in my car so I have a different compressor with different hose connectors, and I've had the collector unattached and open to the air for a year. Do you think I'll need a new collector and will a hose conversion work?
Scotty thanks for educating me and the shade tree mechanic audience. And for those of you who have trouble following Scotty, like anything you need to start your automotive training slowly. Oil changes, belts, simple brake work... As you work your way up and get to know your car, read a little more about how things work and you will be wrenching with the best or at least know enough to decide whether you should do it yourself or give it to your trusted mechanic.
ITS ALL GOOD TILL THE WHOLE SYSTEM BLOWS UP. THE COMPUTER CONTROLS PRESSURE SWITCHES, REFRIGERANT CARRIES THE OIL FOR THE AC SYSTEM. SO IF YOU BYPASS THE COMPUTER AND THE AC RUNS WITH LOW PRESSURES OR LOW REFRIGERANT THE OIL IS NOT GETTING CIRCULATED AND YOU WILL END UP REPLACING SYSTEM. FIX IT RIGHT
@dale68z Ah, get that stick out of your rear end. If you don't mind spending possible thousands to fix an ac system the way it was made , go a head. I;m showing an alternative. Scotty
@lks242 the evaporator should be under the dash, and any auto parts store with older guys working there can sell you an old thermostat like that , ask em from one from any sixties American car, they all had em then. Scotty
@lks242 depends where it is on your car, some can be accessed by just removing the glove box, some fords have em in the hood area, easy to access. Scotty
Hey Scotty, i have a late 80s model mazda with no AC does this have a computer? when i press the AC button it seems like it is working except its hot air, do you think it needs a recharge? a family member who i got the car from said it needs a part he wasent very helpful.
@scottykilmer Need help!!! hey scotty i just put some ac boost in my 1999 plymouh breez and its running way cold but I noticed or my gf noticed a clear fluid leaking as i was pulling out i drove like hald a mile or less came back home and its still leaking should i be worried it wasnt leaing till i filled it with the ac boost so if you ever know anything about that please let me know oh and they say my model car is known for catching on fire from power steering leaks is their a way to prevent
@scottykilmer it from happing cause they say when it leaks the fluid gets on some wires ,maybe i can buy some kind of protective wire covers or something to prevent this from happing take note that i just bought this car last week with 94k miles on it did a carfax no bad reports on it so idk just want to be safe plus i love my new used car anything you can help id be so grateful maybe i can message you the link of the youtube video where the same car this happened to?
my a/c works, but it causes my car to idle too low and stall out. From what i've researched, it's probably the idle air control valve (sound right?), but I can't find the darn thing in my 87 corolla.
@lanceman73 Many times in modern cars the computer AC systems break down and can cost over a thousand dollars to fix. Many people don't have this money. So I show a way to do this, and if you really are a worrywart, you can also wire the pressure switches in line with this manner I showed. Scotty
I would like to see this video in more detail, first were dose the wire go in the switch theres two pins inside dose it touch the two pins i call them pins but there flat.
@SVTVI So they can make small fortunes fixing them, if you ask me. It does allow for more control of the Ac system, like the stupid GM dual climate control where one side can be hot and the other cold. But really, I think that's going a big too far. Scotty
hey how it going i went looking for my car short hadnt seen your videos and endd up burning the wires not all just the kar open lights i have a holden calais 92 and was just wondering how i might be able to rewire the cigeret lighter door relays and the lights if you kan help that will be great
@guvnuckle1 Any device can be easily rewired by just cutting the old wires off, and connecting new ones directly to the battery, and putting an inline fuse on the power wire. Scotty
My 2002 Ford Windstar doesn't have air conditioning, but how do I know whether it's the computer that is the problem or if the freon has all leaked out? If I turn the ac on in the vehicle all i get is warm air from the engine. Thanks!
@WeatherPilot First check the refrigerant pressure with ac gauges. If you don't have them or know how to work em, pay a mechanic to check it for you. Takes one minute. Scotty
@WeatherPilot Your question does not make sense, you say your vehicle doesn't have AC in it. for ones with AC, you put a set of gauges on the Ac system and if there is no pressure, the freon has leaked out. Scotty
People could end up doing this repair without even having their A/C checked. It may not be the ECU at fault, it could just be a faulty switch/ sensor or low gas pressure. My advice is if you dont understand how it works......dont let someone else tell YOU how to fix it.
@markymark9172 OK, I'll put a warning on all my videos that says "If you are a moron do not try any of this." I'm making these videos for people who have brains inside their head. So if you have little gray matter upstairs, DO NOT try to fix your car. Everyone else, give it a try. Scotty
you can use an arduino with a thermistor on the analog output, it's even cheaper, smarter (you can program it to turn on only when the outside temperature is above a certain point for example) and with an arduino now in the car you can do all sorts of fancy things like datalog your gas mileage
Thanks so much for helping people fix their cars right but inexpensive. I have an air compressor that is leaking from the o-ring btwn the 2 halves. Is there any way to seal it up without just replacing the o-ring?
@frankie2234 You just run a wire from the battery positive to your switch on the dash, and run the other end of the switch through the thermostatic switch and then to the compression power wire. Scotty
@feeblemindedman1 they all have wires going to the clutch in jeeps, you just need to access it. Follow the wire from the compressor, eventually it reaches an area you can work on it. Scotty
@smithraymond09029 How observant. Videos were made over the last couple of decades, and this is an older one. the newer ones are me being old the whole shoot. Scotty
I have a question for you. What is it that people refer to as a AC Can? I've heard the slang but don't quite know what it is. I think it might be the Drier but not so sure.
can you help me with my misconception, and if so; can you also give me other names that people give certain parts and accessories for the AC system?
Hi, I have a 89 Pontiac Tempest, not so while ago I've hit a hole in the ground while going 60 mph , hitted very hard i've seen some white smoke comming out of the right side of the engine. since then I have no cold air from the A/C, could it be the A/C hose that broke ?
@undrgrndr2 Something broke in the ac system for sure, could be a hose, could be the compressor or a bracket hitting the condenser. If you put a little refrigerant in, odds are you'll hear the leak quickly. Scotty
would it be possible to do this mod on a 98 town car? I can't figure out where the evaporator is on this car.
altpath 1 week ago
@altpath sure you can do it, the evap is often under the hood on that model, but if not, it's behind the glove box.

@xHDxBrooklyn1 run a pressure test of the system and see what the pressures are, high and low side. Then post those pressures and I can analyze it further, it's very complex. Scotty

I have a 91 honda accord, I just got a compressor put on it and my air is cool but it doesnt get cold enough to cool off the car. Can you help me
sansbure458 7 months ago
@sansbure458 many things can do that, often a clogged expansion valve inside the dash. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
hey scotty, My car AC turns on and usually runs well for about a minute, but then the compressor starts to turn on and off every second and then stays off. Will this fix my problem? The compressor is brand new.
fmonsalv726 7 months ago

Hey Scott, nice video. Need a little help please.
My car a/c works and blows good chilly air only in the morning when I start the car. It will work perfect for hours till I don't stop the car.
Once the car has had a halt for more than half an hour, or the car is in sun, or the temperature is hot outside, it wont blow cool air.
Compressor gets turned on, but no cool air.
No leakage at all. Gas pressure is perfect.
Its R134, skoda fabia.
Anyone could help please?
7ankss 8 months ago
@7ankss Often a bad expansion valve if it stops blowing cold when it gets hot outside (or a sign of low refrigerant--in such a case I always first just suck all the refrigerant out, and then fill it up with a factory weight of refrigerant, that often fixes it. ) Scotty
scottykilmer 8 months ago
@scottykilmer
Thanks for quick response, I shall try it tomorrow.
7ankss 8 months ago
Your A/C high pressure system will be depleted to a point where NO CONSIDERABLE COOLING is taking place within 3 -10 minutes , after a leak develops - as the entire system is pressurized in a loop to or from the compressor that maintains the constant pressure.
fthrcast 8 months ago
Any stupidity related to a proposed leak in the refrigerant lines/system , especially while condensation is occuring - is as stupid as it gets. Any condensation in a A/C system , means there is a blockage or 1 or more of the sensors/switches isn't working to operate the vent doors etc. LEAK ? Not applicable to condensation.
fthrcast 8 months ago

Any thoughts?
tmz90 8 months ago
@tmz90 : It sounds to me like you have a worn clutchplate on the compressor , that - when it engages the pulley cold or the friction surface is not worm. When the friction surfaces are both worm , the engagement is also different. Plus , when it clicks loudly , (cold) , the compressor itself has been sitting still , until the clutch engages the spinning pulley , which is attached full time to the drive belts. Check the thick or thinness of the clutch & pulley mating surfaces. SB 1/8" + .

As you work your way up and get to know your car, read a little more about how things work and you will be wrenching with the best or at least know enough to decide whether you should do it yourself or give it to your trusted mechanic.
msimbo93 9 months ago

@lks242 the evaporator should be under the dash, and any auto parts store with older guys working there can sell you an old thermostat like that , ask em from one from any sixties American car, they all had em then. Scotty

@scottykilmer Do you mean I have to take off the dash? Or is there any way I can reach it without tearing apart dashboard? Thanks

@lanceman73 Many times in modern cars the computer AC systems break down and can cost over a thousand dollars to fix. Many people don't have this money. So I show a way to do this, and if you really are a worrywart, you can also wire the pressure switches in line with this manner I showed. Scotty

cool video Scotty ! As an HVAC technician, I can appreciate this type of repair. Why exactly do they control the a/c through the computer anyway ?
SVTVI 1 year ago
@SVTVI So they can make small fortunes fixing them, if you ask me. It does allow for more control of the Ac system, like the stupid GM dual climate control where one side can be hot and the other cold. But really, I think that's going a big too far. Scotty

My 2002 Ford Windstar doesn't have air conditioning, but how do I know whether it's the computer that is the problem or if the freon has all leaked out? If I turn the ac on in the vehicle all i get is warm air from the engine. Thanks!
WeatherPilot 1 year ago
@WeatherPilot First check the refrigerant pressure with ac gauges. If you don't have them or know how to work em, pay a mechanic to check it for you. Takes one minute. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@WeatherPilot Check the charge first, because if that's too low the compressor won't come on anyway.
fixinggrace 1 year ago
@WeatherPilot Your question does not make sense, you say your vehicle doesn't have AC in it. for ones with AC, you put a set of gauges on the Ac system and if there is no pressure, the freon has leaked out. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
People could end up doing this repair without even having their A/C checked. It may not be the ECU at fault, it could just be a faulty switch/ sensor or low gas pressure. My advice is if you dont understand how it works......dont let someone else tell YOU how to fix it.
