  • Thanks for this vid. See long ago I found a monarch someone had ran over it, for some reason it could fly. Anyways I didn't know how to help it and at the time I didn't have internet. So it died but i framed it.

  • i raised a monarch. and a rock fell on it when i released it.... flew away limp. sad

  • Put quite simply, that is bad-ass!

  • DOES HE NOT FEEL IT WHEN YOU CUT HIS/HERS WING?

  • @TheNaturalColours Like he said, it's like a hair cut.

  • @TheNaturalColours ya, birds don't feel it when you cut their feathers, it's the same with a butterfly

  • thats so sweet <3

  • Where do you get the wings?

  • I usually just keep them in a frog tank until their wings are mended. Is that ok? I feed them and stuff

  • how kind :]

  • that is awesome

  • even the butterfly looks cool these days i wonder if its like nail polish color so i can useNail polish remover / acetone will dissolve cured glue, but would likely be toxic to your patient (it's sometimes used in killing jars in place of cyanide), best avoided to be safe.

  • Superglue would be excellent for this, very light, bonds well to keratin or chitin, sets fast. Work over a piece of Saran wrap or waxed paper to keep your butterfly from sticking to your bench. Dust your fingers with talc first to keep from gluing yourself to the creature. Nail polish remover / acetone will dissolve cured glue, but would likely be toxic to your patient (it's sometimes used in killing jars in place of cyanide), best avoided to be safe.

  • so..where the hell can i get new wings!?!?

  • This is so amazing. It gave me a little more faith in the human race and a little more hope for the future! I once worked a week to make a cast to fix a snail I had accidentally crushed (he recovered in a month or so) so it's really nice to see other people helping helpless creatures.

  • i am glad i found this video. found a butterfly with severely damaged wings yesterday evening. called a butterfly house and she told me to leave him on a flower for one last meal before a bird eats him -.- i ordered wings online, hope they get here in time. until they arrive he is living in a makeshift home with plants n fruits *shrugs* cross your fingers it all works out!

  • i thought the oils on your skins fuck up butterflys

  • Does the butterfly need new wings or is it for you to like it more? Also what about pain and infection when cutting it off? What about imbalance due to the glue's weight? You seem to do it not to help the animal but to enjoy it's looks more.

  • Really nice. I really like this. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

  • QUESTION: is it necessary to cut out a piece of the wing before attaching it again? I think the butterfly may suffer from that :-( I mean if it's necessary ok let's do it...

  • Where do you get all those butterfly wings from, and all those alive butterflies with broken wings?......

    :O

  • awwww!!!!!! thats so awesome what your doing!!!!

  • io did fix a butterflys wing it lost one whole wing and on piece on the other side!

  • Awwhh ... this is too sweet.

  • amazing!! it doesn't matter what people think, you are a hero!

  • hi there, should you really be handling that butterfly's wing so much, won't it feel it?

  • Wow! I would have never known this could be done, and was unaware that Monarch's fly for so long! You're doing amazing work! My daughter has been caring for one with a torn/severed wing...I'm lacking a few of the supplies needed, but feel inspired that it can be fixed! Thank you!

  • you are wonderful

  • I found a monarch butterfly with one antenna cut off.. can that heal? I feel like it's suffering :(

  • were do i get wings?

  • Hes flapping his wings all like "Oh hey der, I gots new wings chah :D"

  • TAHT IS AWESOME, PLUS 50 INTERNET POINTS TO YOU

  • Where do I get the new wings?

  • My friend has a butterfly that came out with deforned wings. They are proportionally too small for its body and it can't fly. Would it be possible to make wing extensions for it, like out of paper?

  • But, this butterfly has blend wings! (u.u) And the damage is huge!! Could you help meee? I want her flying!

  • 10 people used JB weld

  • Thats the same one i saw at the como zoo Garden

  • I've seen an article about this type of procedure online. The video is much more helpful. I wonder if there's a lightweight waterproof material that can substitute for butterfly wing if you don't have any spares laying around... some type of plastic perhaps.

  • where do i get new wings? the grocery store? Ebay? seriously.

  • Thank you for the info! My mom called me today about a butterfly that had a broken wing and was stuck on their screened in porch, not moving for a day and a half. My dad held his bottom wing and my mom took pictures as I cut the edges away of the top wings. He was able to fly away! It was SO COOL!

  • 9 people killed their butterfly

  • @unclewalnut yup (:

  • does it hurt the butterfly when cutting its wings? seems like its being hurt while its immobilized to.

  • I found a butterfly (monarch) with one wing. The other is really damaged. Does anyone know where I can buy wings to make the repair?

    Thanks

  • doesnt cutting the wing hurt the butterfly?

  • @jazminesky4life if you do it on purpouse

  • i found a butterfly with a messed up wing but i don't know whats wrong with its wing.It looks just fine.Someone help me figure this out?

  • 2:34 - "mmkay" :DDD

  • I had a painted lady that came out of the chrysalis with a folded wing. I had another that came out with both wings mostly missing. I took care of them and spoiled them everyday, but after watching this video I was wondering if it would have been possible to fix them when they were alive. Thank you for the how-to!

  • awww good for you mate that poor buterfly

  • are the monarch butterfly wings different from other butterflys wings becuz whn i grab its wings the pretty decoration or color comes off like powder or sumthing??

  • Poor guy : (

  • ppl why do you say such mean comments? This man helped a living thing. It breathes like you, it eats like you, it sleeps, drinks and walks like you. The poor butterfly was so scared but at the end he was happy that he can fly again and plus if the butterfly is happy aren't you guys happy. It's Gods creation. Respect it. And for the man that helped the butterfly.....God bless you you are very nice♥

  • @Gina200119 I appreciate your comment very much. A: because you see that this man is helping a hurt creature. and B: you actually realize that God's creatures extend past humans and include all life, if there is a hurt animal or insect you should try your best to help, I have encountered so many christians who think animals are just there to be used and abused. You are a breath or fresh air as it is obvious to me that you actually listen to the teachings rather that pretend. Thank you.

  • @chumon1992 thx you are very wonderful yourself i bet :D

  • @Gina200119 You are a good person!

  • @AgnesJane6 thank you

  • @AgnesJane6 thx :)

  • @Gina200119 its cool that this guy repaired it but the butterfly is not happy. it doesnt have feelings because it does not have a cerebral cortex with a six inch diameter that is capable of such complex thought. dont give too much credit to the butterfly

  • @anthonyhusiak The butterfly can eat like you...it can drink...it can breath...it can move...it can communicate.... so why can't it have feelings? Butterfly's can FEEL pain...and love sometimes it's not always about science.

  • @Gina200119 i never said i didnt love the butterfly. i have love for all creatures. i just dont think its 'happy'...take a psychology-based neuroscience course on animal behavior and maybe you'll know what i mean.

  • This butterfly reminds me of the painted lady butterfly. I'm sad cause in my school, we let go of our butterflies.

  • Oh wow thank you so much for helping Butterflies in need :)

  • I have a dying Mexican Tiger Moth in my room with layer of its right wing completely gone and the link to its body very damaged and half of its legs are cut off or crippled idk what to do with it I don't want it to die :s

  • @grayfox189 User superglue to attach toothpick pieces as leg replacements and use a piece of nylon for making his new wing.

  • that is so nice he must be so caring to help a little creature like that :')

  • Our butterfly is flying!!!! Thank you so much!

  • Just finished doing a repair following these instructions. There is a slight tear in the middle vein. Do we splint that too?

  • What if the wings are bent?

  • That was awesome

  • 1:08

    butterfly: wtf is all this?

  • Is there anything that can be done to straighten out a good pair of wings that are bent?

  • I live in texas. If i was to plant some milkweed in my garden is there a good chance I would see some monarchs? any suggestions? I would love to see some monarchs in my garden.

  • don't they pump blood through their wings? if you put a dead wing on would it last until the butterfly dies?

  • I wish I had seen this tutorial before!!!

  • COOL! can you fix my friend arm? =D

  • Great video - thanks!

  • This is a fascinating videl! Thank you for sharing it. I have been raising Monarchs for MANY years and wish I would have seen this a long time ago. At least I'll know what to do in the future, if necessary. Thanks!!

  • Thank you so much! I just raised 17 monarchs, a few can't fly, and are unrepairable. But one, has a broken wing. It's very windy, and she got caught under weeds, grass, and some sticks. I helped he out and I see that her wing is almost off. I found that one of my other ones had died outside, but, it's wing can definitely go to help this girl! Thanks again for such a wonderful video! (:

  • Hi I have a butterfly that didn't cam all well out of cocoon one wing is all ok but the other wind didn't come out of cocoon well and butterfly seamed to be stuck for hours with this wing to the cocoon, so I gave him a little bit of help to to get the wing out that went well but unfortunately the wing didn't get its shape back, its bent end wrinkled. Is there a way to fix this? I would appreciate the help its a pretty butterfly :)

  • @ztarrfect you can't help them come out of the cocoon, they have to make the effort on their own so their wings form properly... even if it looks like they're suffering for hours while coming out, you should NEVER help them =/

my father always told us the story of a man that helped a butterfly come out of the cocoon, and it could never fly away.. "it's like raising children: if you always help them they'll never make it on their own"

sorry i made this message so long, i hope it helped =)

  • ur like a butterfly doctor ^_^

  • Guys, I'm guessing he gets the 'new' wings from dead ones he finds. They don't live forever you know...

  • do the powder on butterflies wings give you asmah if you breathe it in?

  • Next Video - How to repair card stock with Monarch butterfly wings.

  • where can you get spare wings?

  • the extra wings are they from other butterflys or r they paper plastic wings?

  • dude! where'd ya get the old butterfly wings?? you kill another one before??? BUTTERFLY MURDERER!!!!

  • i found a really tiny butterfly trying to fly and i felt so bad so imma try and fix his wings!!

  • Uhh.... It's a butterfly. I can understand why you would want to help it but.... Really?

  • What if the practically the whole wing is gone? I do not have any spare wings, and I don't think I can do it without, please help.

  • Hi! Great video! I was wondering if there is anything you can do to repair a wrinkled butterfly wing. We had a black swallowtail come out of the chrysalis and the edges of it's wings are wrinkled enough to prevent it from being able to fly. I know this is probably a stupid question but then again I never thought you could fix a butterfly wing with adhesive..... can a wing be ironed out with low heat?

  • Hello: We have a butterfly that did not fully eclose - the top corner of his right wing remained folded over. We've kept him the last couple of days, giving him watermelon and wildflowers to eat, but he really wants to fly. It's sad to see him fluttering about without a lot of control. Can you offer any advice? I'd be happy to send a photo or short video of the damage. Please let me know.

  • I've always thought it damaged butterfly wings to handle them at all, by scraping off their "feathers"; is this just a myth?

By the way everybody, baby powder is the same as corn starch.

  • Wouldn't it be better to wear gloves since the color part of the wings can rub off on your fingers???

  • I would be so scared that I was going to hurt the dear butterfly.

By the by, any Irregulars sent here? :3

  • @elmer1410 Thank you for caring so much about nature, you are part of securing *our* future!

  • I was always told that you can't even touch a butterfly's wing without ruining it somehow. Good to see I was wrong!

  • What glue are you using?

  • Yes but...did it fly ? (Great job though)

  • Kind of fascinating.. but never did I imagine I would ever see someone repair a butterfly wing!

  • I love this! I would never have thought such a thing was even possible. You seem such a sweet and patient person, too, gluing the wings back on butterflies. I think I fell in love, just a little bit.

  • Brummer

I just released a very happy Swallowtail after doing a repair as described in the video. I would have never guessed it was possible but through the magic of the internet one more butterfly was released into the wild! Fabulous - thank you for the information!!

  • Really awsome video!!!! Where can I get the butterfly parts????

  • This is so cool!!! We have 30 "babies" my twins call them.. they are eating all the milk weed.. lol I'm glad I know about this!

  • oh my god...i just found a butterfly, black with beautiful colours but his right wing is damaged and his whole right bottom wing is ripped....Anything I can do? :( I am at work and do not have any of the supplies + the damage is big and seems like it needs a new wing which I don't have :(

  • Nice job on the repair realy quite creative, but don't they have a lifespan of only a cupple weeks? I could understand if you owned the butterflys repair might be nessesary but wild butterflys I just don't see the point. Call me heartless or such not, I just don't see any reason to save something that will die anyways within a week or so.

  • @0000UnDead0000 6 months, not weeks

  • @0000UnDead0000 monarch is 6 months when mature

  • @0000UnDead0000 Even if it was going to die in a week or so, that's only a short amount of time in relation to our own lifespans. Maybe a week is a really long time to a butterfly.

  • I'd never heard of anyone doing rehab on a butterfly before! Great!

  • Great video! Thanks for all you continue to do to save our monarchs!

    Aloha, Dancetta

  • that is why i love internet you can find EVERYTHING!!!!

  • wow i never even thought you could do that, cool very cool. I heard that butterflies have stuff on there wings that you can rub off that will hurt the butterfly, this must not be true?

  • @PreviewHD Their wings are actually clear with colored scales. They fly fine without some. Best to be very careful as wings can be broken if not held correctly. There are important creatures all around us trying to make a living in a difficult world. Sometimes you can really make a difference...just by making sure they are not under your foot. All the best ! LMF Staff

  • true compassion for the smallest creatures

  • This is so cool . Its tough to be such a small creature , I am so glad there are people like you willing to take time to help them . It really does make a difference in a creatures life . Thank You

  • Where would you get spare wings?

  • You did a great work dude. I never thought this would work. Respect!

  • It would appear that you sir are the moron, if you even bothered to watch the video you'd know that a Monarch lives for a lot longer than a week.

Just because it's a butterfly it doesn't follow that we should be callous towards it. They're wonderful creatures with incredible and interesting life cycles.

Personally I'm pleased to see a caring human; it makes a nice change.

  • Yikes, butterfly was very unhappy about that glue

  • God bless you man

  • I know this was a while ago but where do u get you spare wings

  • you can google it and see what comes up, but im a real animal lover, and i think this video is realy educational and vital to monarch survival.

  • I once found a butterfly with a broken wing, it wasn't to serious but it did mess up how it flew. So I used a sticky sticker to patch up the crack, it worked very well. :)

  • I love you for being such a gentle and caring person.=)

  • Amazing!

  • Can you believe these manarchs cooperate like this? Awesome!

  • i thought u couldnt touch thier wings

i found a butterfly with a broken wing

and i didnt know wat to do.

    :)

  • WERE Would u fing a wing like that??

  • This is so great. You're an amazing person for helping them out.

  • awesome

  • This does not hurt them

  • The butterfly looks like he dose not like this at all.

  • @me050652 they are not happy about it until the end...then they do realize they are repaired and seem very happy.

  • Is there a way to fix a forewing that's somehow moved out of position to be underneath the hindwing without using any tools?

  • Doesn't it hurt?

  • I don't think the wings have any nerves in them so probably not.
