That was a lot of fun, well choreographed, as well as they got a decent stuntman that relatively looked like the actor they were doubling, anyone remember the curly haired Spock stunt double? That and I'd say Decker was really motivated to win, as his Kirk-style thought on the fly plan wouldn't work if he was stuck under guard in sickbay would it?
I remember reading somewhere that when "The Doomsday Machine" was in production, the writers said they didn't want to stage the typical bare knuckles boxing type of fight for this scene. Instead, they wrote that Decker and the security guard were both fighting using a futuristic style of martial arts. Thus, the double handed swings to the security officer's body by Decker and the vaguely Eastern fight moves by both men.
thats actually a very good episode. the end, when decker sacrifice himself and kirk is stuck on the other ship is great moment of tv history. for many minutes you see only people, talking to each other via transmitter, but its more thrilling than most so-called thrillers...
That would have been an interesting fight had it continued. The Commodore tricked him with that fake cough though. The redshirt sort of let down his guard, and Decker capitalized.
One Cool Fight between a Starfleet Commodore and a Medium Level Security Officer from the Enterprise.
One Tough, Grizzly Flag Officer willing to Play Dirty and Rough after having his Ship Nearly Destroyed and his Whole Crew Killed is Supreme Competition for any Security Guard/ Tactical Officer on the Enterprise.
@kacperivo this redshirt guy doesn't die. later in this episode, we see that captain kirk get's an intercom call where it is stated that a unconscious crewman (this redshirt guy) is found and a shuttle and commodore decker are missing.
An almost 50 year old commodore beat the snot out of a redshirt!!!He had him in a full nelson and let him get out!!!The redshirt got in only one good shot!!!With martial arts training and being a younger man the redshirt should have whipped ass easily!!But then it wouldn't be Star Trek!!!
Maybe the fact that Decker was kinda insane at the time gave him extra strength, which sometimes happens. And he pulled the "fake cough" on the redshirt which might have fooled him.
Also, with the rate at which they go through redshirts, the Federation probably can't afford to continue fielding them with what you might call "proper training." I'm sure the tags on their shirts all say "biodegradable."
i'm 45 and I don't think I have seen a 22 year old of equal weight , height that could take me ina fight. You must be kidding.Charles Bronson was 53 when he made "Hard Times". Charlton Heston did not become an actionj star until he was in his 50's. Don't fool yourself kid. Some of us are quite lean, strong and fast!
@blackonics thats true. Many older men are especially strong. A friend of my fater is now 65. He worked all of his life on construction sites - and he is damn strong. I'm sure he would beat the hell out of me if it would come to a fight.
@agt334 , I remember an incident that happened several years ago at a high school where I was teaching. There was a janitor, an old Marine and Vietnam vet in his late 60's , and one day after school three wannabe gangbangers tried to accost him in the hall, and he opend a can of Force Recon whoopass on those boys! I was staying late after school and didn't see the incident, but I remember hearing one of the boys running down the hall yelling for school resource officer for help!
@Kodos13 you're right about that one. There's nothing like having an alien parasite inside you pumping you full of adrenaline to give you superhuman strength(lol).
Since Decker was fighting a redshirt, it's amazing that the redshirt wasn't killed, thus depriving McCoy of his favorite diagnosis and upping the ante for Spock and Co. The redshirt, incidentally, when they're circling each other, has an expression on his face that I don't think Bruce Lee would've approved of.
Matts' a lefty he is leading with his right hand, The security gaurd is leading with his left.....very few moves you can use to get out of a full-nelson, perhaps if your flexible enough you could reach back like that, but you wouldn't have much on it.
I love how the TOS fights were so realistic. Nothing exaggerated, just more like a real-life fight. Decker was being particularly brutal in his dispatching of that guard! This is a cool scene though, because it gives us a chance to see some "redshirts" kicking ass like they're trained to.
I think it was meant to garner sympathy and tug on the redshirt's heart strings for the old guy. You know what they say, age and guile outdoes youth and strength everytime!
If you have to fight an old guy...Get an old guy to do your fighting for you!

It's like a sign of the Apocalypse when a Red Shirt doesn't die immediately and at least ATTEMPTS to fight off his attacker. XD Awesome scene :D

Poor redshirts. The lowest form of society in Star Trek. Can't even beat an old man.
