everything in this series is sad. I guess, as a murderer, Savino knew that one day it would have happened to him. He was willing to kill. He would have tortured and killed Butchie just like Omar said. But death is so final, it never gives anyone a second chance. And even if most of these people are just evil forever (and even worse most of them get away with it), the Cutty story, and even Wee Bey, hell even Chris, show they aren't permanently evil.
(SPOILERS) In hindsight I feel like this scene was sort of the beginning of the end for Omar. He really didn't have to kill Savino but did it anyway out of frustration and anger. Part of the reason I think he murked Savino was that when he saw him, it could've brought back old anger from when his boy Brandon was killed by the Barksdales.
Savino thought he could talk Omar out of killing him due the fact that he was associating with Marlo and running for him, after Chris and Snoop killed Butchie.
If it was anyone else Savino would have probably held it down, but seeing that it was Omar, he knew his time was limited and had to do everything to escape, even snitching which he did with chris and snoop, but Omar was smarter than that and didnt fall for it and finished Savino off.

I'm pretty sure that Omar planned on killing Savino from the jump. He just wanted to get some info from Savino before then. Omar's war with Marlo grew stronger after Butchie's murder, so I'm sure he planned on knocking off Marlo's people one by one. Including Savino.

Omar asking Savino what he would've done if he was there was a rheatorical question. He knew he would've whacked Butchie. It's all business with Marlo. No questions asked. I never really understood everyone's fascination with Omar. He wasn't the type of man you would want to run into at night. He was a parasite who fed off the work of drug dealers. He was no different than Clay Davis, or Maurice Levy. At least they would smile in your face while robbing you. Omar would wait in corners like a jackal ready for his next prey.

What makes Omar superior in character to the people you mention is that it's his honesty that is scary, not his ability to deceive.
This scene is hard for me to watch, because it really hints that Omar's days are numbered. The Wire has so many scenes in which Omar spares someone's life at the last moment (Brother Mouzone, Slim Charles, etc.). Here, he's so blinded by grief and anger that he executes someone in cold blood (even if Savino wasn't exactly pure). And he had already begun swearing in scenes, something you never saw until now.
@sexxyladychick When Omar started robbing Avon's package, Avon sent his muscle (Wey bay, Stinkum, Bird and Savino) to kill Omar and anyone associated with Omar.....ala Bailey and Brandon.
Just remember that one scene in season 1 when Wey Bay, Stinkum and Savino broke in Omar's spot looking for him and they all started laughing when they found pictures of Omar and Brandon.......with Omar looking at everything go down from that crack fein's house, as they burned down his van.

@krishnm Good point about this scene showing it was the end for Omar. Going into season 5 I didn't think Omar's chances of survival were good, but I had a bad feeling after he iced Servino. Its kinda like the wire its own weird karma system. Once a character does something out of their character then bad things happen to them.
Omar kept his code. Savino was in the game. This killing also was part of his strategy. He tried setting the money on fire and flushing the drugs down the toilet and that didn't bring Marlo down to the street, so he took it up one notch. Start dropping his muscle. Cold blooded? Sure. But you forget, Omar makes his life robbing drug dealers. He isn't exactly the warm and fuzzy kind. Sometimes his code can make you forget that. He's cold too. He has to be.
this is the first and only time omar does something truly unnecessary and evil. he makes a promise to bunk of no more murders, marlo would have been acceptable, but this is done out of frustration and impatience. he pays with his own life in the same way.

If it was anyone else Savino would have probably held it down, but seeing that it was Omar, he knew his time was limited and had to do everything to escape, even snitching which he did with chris and snoop, but Omar was smarter than that and didnt fall for it and finished Savino off.
Savino would have been a better character if they showed more of him

@Secret911 But Chris and Snoop did kill Butchie. I believe Omar didn't waste much more time pulling the trigger because Savino told him what he already knew. I'm pretty sure that Omar planned on killing Savino from the jump. He just wanted to get some info from Savino before then. Omar's war with Marlo grew stronger after Butchie's murder, so I'm sure he planned on knocking off Marlo's people one by one. Including Savino.

@Secret911 Also, after Savino said that Chris and Snoop were there and not him, Omar thought less about interrogating and more about Butchie. Omar asking Savino what he would've done if he was there was a rheatorical question. He knew he would've whacked Butchie. It's all business with Marlo. No questions asked. So Omar just stopped wasting his time and blew Savino's brains out.

dear wire creators and writers: thanks for wrecking perfection by killing omar. trying to outsmart the fans by thinkin, "no one will see this coming." and having him killed by a 5 year old. did you guys just throw season 5 together in 5 minutes, cause it was a big disappointment. out of all the great shows, the shield was the only one that got it right when it came to the final season. the fans went away satisfied. i thought the wire was better, then i watched season 5 and it knocked it back sum

I never really understood everyone's fascination with Omar. He wasn't the type of man you would want to run into at night. He was a parasite who fed off the work of drug dealers. He was no different than Clay Davis, or Maurice Levy. At least they would smile in your face while robbing you. Omar would wait in corners like a jackal ready for his next prey.

This scene is hard for me to watch, because it really hints that Omar's days are numbered. The Wire has so many scenes in which Omar spares someone's life at the last moment (Brother Mouzone, Slim Charles, etc.). Here, he's so blinded by grief and anger that he executes someone in cold blood (even if Savino wasn't exactly pure). And he had already begun swearing in scenes, something you never saw until now.

@sexxyladychick When Omar started robbing Avon's package, Avon sent his muscle (Wey bay, Stinkum, Bird and Savino) to kill Omar and anyone associated with Omar.....ala Bailey and Brandon.
Just remember that one scene in season 1 when Wey Bay, Stinkum and Savino broke in Omar's spot looking for him and they all started laughing when they found pictures of Omar and Brandon.......with Omar looking at everything go down from that crack fein's house, as they burned down his van.

@krishnm Good point about this scene showing it was the end for Omar. Going into season 5 I didn't think Omar's chances of survival were good, but I had a bad feeling after he iced Servino. Its kinda like the wire its own weird karma system. Once a character does something out of their character then bad things happen to them.

Omar kept his code. Savino was in the game. This killing also was part of his strategy. He tried setting the money on fire and flushing the drugs down the toilet and that didn't bring Marlo down to the street, so he took it up one notch. Start dropping his muscle. Cold blooded? Sure. But you forget, Omar makes his life robbing drug dealers. He isn't exactly the warm and fuzzy kind. Sometimes his code can make you forget that. He's cold too. He has to be.

this is the first and only time omar does something truly unnecessary and evil. he makes a promise to bunk of no more murders, marlo would have been acceptable, but this is done out of frustration and impatience. he pays with his own life in the same way.
