I am trying to learn German, the grammar is so hard! It's such an amazing language though - definitely worth the effort. I could understand about 90% of what you said without reading the subtitles :)
Wirklich beeindruckend. Ich finde das du keinen hörbaren Akzent hast. Nur die Art wie du dich ausdrückst ist nicht ganz so wir Deutschen es machen würden. Wenn du 1 bis 2 Jahre in Deutschland leben würdest könntest du ohne weiteres als Muttersprachler durchgehen. Es wird ja häufig behauptet das es ab einem gewissen Alter nicht mehr möglich ist eine Sprache so zu erlernen das man auf ein akzentfreies muttersprachliches Niveau kommt. Ich würde sagen das Leute wie du der Gegenbeweis dafür sind.

When I announced that I was learning German, everyone said ‘the best way to learn German is to live there’. Wow, ich bin beeindruckt. Allein die Tatsache, dass Du die "typisch deutschen" Laute wir ch, ü, st und co (no, the co was no German sound ;) ) so perfekt hin bekommst. Das klingt schon gut nach Muttersprachniveau. Ich wünschte mein französisch wäre nur halb so gut - nein viertel so gut, ach sagen wir achtel - wie Dein deutsch. ;)

first of all i just want to say that your language skills a very impressive. I grew in France but my parents are american, so i grew speaking both languages. I know live in the U.S. I'm getting ready to move Swiss-Germany for work. i will forcibly have to learn German. I wanted to know through your experience if Swiss-German is much different from regular German? Secondly, when learning a new language, how much time does it generally take you to learn it ?
plus some people are very gifted at acquiring new languages, our brains work differently as young children and learn language at a much higher rate than an adult can, however some people are lucky enough to retain this "wiring" in their brain and can learn multiple languages fairly quickly
I have considerable trouble achieving an authentic guttural accent when I speak German. I suppose many who speak English run into this trouble as well.
@lmos26 yeah that´s what I meant. How did he actually remember them?. Many of us could try studying words 8 hours a day, but I find it hard that much of that will be remembered the following week.

my problem is that my grammar and syntax is good because i spent SO MUCH FREAKING TIME ON IT, but my vocab is quite limited so im working on that.. it seems like people either go one way or the other with this haha.

@lbb2r It seems to me that learning any language is easier after learning one. In high school, I found German unlearnably hard. After studying a couple other languages, I can't imagine what I found so hard about it.
I have a question for Sie. So I have just started to take German in school and I find that outside of school there is no where to acc speak it and pratice it......Do you have any tips for someone who really is far away from Germany and a person that has no one to speak it too? I can write just fine but I don't really have anyone to pratice speaking with...I would love to go to Germany but Ich habe kein Geld at the moment. :( Anyways hope all is well your a Great inspiration :)

Wow! I'm really impressed, I never would have guessed that German is not your native tongue. I just started learning and I don't think I'll reach your level in 30 years. A big stumbling block for me is trying to read it and get the pronunciation right (such long words!).

Man merkt, dass du nicht perfekt sprichst, aber ich denke, dass ich niemals eine Fremdsprache so beherrschen werde wie du allein Deutsch als Fremdsprache sprichst. As a native speaker of German I can assure you that your German is excellent. Most of the time I would not be able to tell that German is not your mother tongue. The way you master the German grammar is very impressive. Just one minor suggestion: In German we use the term "studieren" only when we refer to the time we spend at university. "Ich lerne Deutsch" (I study German)" - "Ich studiere Deutsch (I study German at university"). Again, your German is brilliant.
@sprachbegeistert Nein nicht unbedingt ;). Man sagt auch studieren, wenn man etwas ausgiebeig ja halt studiert. Ich weiß nciht wie ich dir das erklären soll. Jedenfalls war es schon richtig wie er es gesagt hat ;)
Im vorliegenden Kontext ist meiner Meinung nach eindeutig "lernen" und nicht "studieren" das korrekte Verb. Aber da sind wir wohl unterschiedlicher Auffassung ;-) Ich kann einen Text, ein Buch, ein Dokument usw. eingehend studieren und zwar im Sinne einer eingehenden Prüfung. Wenn ich vom Lernprozess spreche, so verwendet man meiner Meinung nach im Deutschen "studieren" nur in Zusammenhang mit einem Studium an einer Uni.
Mag sein, dass es da auch regionale Unterschiede gibt. Wenn mir jemand sagt, dass er "Italienisch studiert hat", gehe ich aber davon aus, dass er das an einer UNI gemacht hat. Aber wie gesagt, da gibt es wohl auch unter Muttersprachlern unterschiedliche Auffassungen ;-) Jedenfalls ist Richards Deutsch wirklich ausgezeichnet und ich habe größte Hochachtung vor seiner Leistung.
Respekt, dein Deutsch ist wirklich genial. Du hast einen leichten Akzent, aber oft hört man überhaupt nicht, dass du kein Muttersprachler bist. Ich studiere Kommunikationswissenschaften mit dem Schwerpunkt Sprachlehrforschung und Fremdsprachenlinguistik. Ich versuche in meinem Studium herauszufinden, wie man Sprachen am besten lernen kann. Deine Methode ist nach meiner Meinung eine der erfolgreichsten: Vokabeln und Ausdrücke muss man "lernen", die Grammatik sollte man aber "erwerben" indem man Texte und Film-/Tonmaterial liest und hört. So bekommt man ein gutes Gefühl für die Sprache. Gute Arbeit, dein Deutsch ist sehr natürlich!
Also deine Aussprache ist wirklich sehr muttersprachlich, ich seh gaar nichts!! Als wenn du immer in Deutschland gelebt hast, also wirklich Respekt! ^^ Generell 16 Sprachen... Was mir aber auffällt, ist, dass du sehr oft "ehm" sagst, was lustig ist, finde ich, hehe. :D anyway.. :) nicht schlecht
Wow! I'm impressed ... I'm a Cold War Veteran and I was stationed in Germany for 5 years. I left in 1988, before the glorious reunification of the country to one nation. I picked it up pretty well where I could understand it as well as I understand the English Language ... over the years I lost the ability to understand it. Ich habe Deutsch 4 Jahren an der Schule gelernt, aber noch kann ich nicht so gut sprechen. Die Aussprace is wirklich perfekt, man kann alles problemlos verstehen. Und bei der Grammatik gibt es auch keine Fehler.

for instance just google "tagesthemen" ( the 1st link ) . Otherwise just google the word "mediathek" you will find some links that refer to the on-line tv shows posted by the different public broadcasting stations such as ZDF ARD ... etc.
I can confirm that translations are very useful, I had to do German-English translations when I studied in England for 9 months and that helped me a lot improve both my German and my English :) and I can understand that once you've learned a few languages it comes easy to learn new ones, at least if they still belong to the indo-european group :D I'm using my knowledge of German to learn Swedish for example :)

Wow, dein Deutsch ist echt gut! Man merkt, dass du die Sprache im Land gelernt hast. Du sprichst total frei und benutzt teilweise typisch umgangssprachliche Formulierungen (Partikel etc) :) Ich gehe nächsten Monat für ein halbes Jahr nach Holland und hoffe, ich kann die Sprache dort auch so schnell lernen!
Ach wie geil, ich habe ein Austauschjahr in Deutschland gemacht, bin aber aus Amerika, und es ist wirklich toll dein Video anzugucken einfach weil du die Sprache genau wie ich gelernt hast.. nur viel schneller! Und ich hab's mit 17 gelernt! Du hast voll die starke Anziehung für Sprachen.. wenn du das Fernsehen nach einem Monat schon verstehen konntest.. Krass. Ich bin sehr beeindruckt. Könnte man theoretisch eine ganze Sprache lernen, wenn man 1-2 Jahre in dem Land wohnt, wo es gesprochen wird?
@howe92 *g* man merkt, dass du hauptsächlich in der schule gelernt hast! finds immer total klasse, wenn nicht-muttersprachler sowas wie "hab's" oder "voll die" beherrschen - das lernt man in keinem fremdsprachenunterricht! :)

Es ist erstaunlich, wie gut du in einem Satz einzelne Wörte akzentuieren kannst. Ich bin selbst ein Ausländer und lerne gerade meine fünfte Sprache ... mit 17 Jahren beherrsche ich drei Sprachen fließend. Wie viele Sprachen hast du in meinem Alter gesprochen? Wie viel Zeit verbringst du täglich um eine Sprache zu lernen? Und vergisst du die eigentlch Sprachen nicht?
@poleag you use articles in front of names in German. Note how the sentence is a similar form to saying "I am THE teacher" . Although you could also say something like "Ich heisse Richard" which translates as "I am called Richard", as you wouldn't say "I am called the Richard". Or "Meine Name ist Richard" "My name is Richard".
BTW. I am starting work in an hour at my first German job. Ich spreche nur ein bissen Deutsch, ich bin sehr nervös..

Ok I am impressed. I've spent about a year in germany learning the language. But your accent is perfect. I understand everything and can really tell the difference of any kind of dialekt and accent. But you speak like native german. wow! What's you country of origin?

first of all i just want to say that your language skills a very impressive. I grew in France but my parents are american, so i grew speaking both languages. I know live in the U.S. I'm getting ready to move Swiss-Germany for work. i will forcibly have to learn German. I wanted to know through your experience if Swiss-German is much different from regular German? Secondly, when learning a new language, how much time does it generally take you to learn it ?

@lmos26 yeah that´s what I meant. How did he actually remember them?. Many of us could try studying words 8 hours a day, but I find it hard that much of that will be remembered the following week.

I have a question for Sie. So I have just started to take German in school and I find that outside of school there is no where to acc speak it and pratice it......Do you have any tips for someone who really is far away from Germany and a person that has no one to speak it too? Wow! I'm really impressed, I never would have guessed that German is not your native tongue. I just started learning and I don't think I'll reach your level in 30 years. A big stumbling block for me is trying to read it and get the pronunciation right (such long words!).

Ich bin begeistert von deinen Sprachkenntnissen! Man merkt, dass du nicht perfekt sprichst, aber ich denke, dass ich niemals eine Fremdsprache so beherrschen werde wie du allein Deutsch als Fremdsprache sprichst. Am meisten hat mich allerdings das häufige "Ähm" gestört. Dieses Füllwort hast du nicht nötig ;) Ansonsten, wünsche ich dir noch viel Spass und Erfolg mit deinen Sprachen :]

As a native speaker of German I can assure you that your German is excellent. Most of the time I would not be able to tell that German is not your mother tongue. The way you master the German grammar is very impressive. Just one minor suggestion: In German we use the term "studieren" only when we refer to the time we spend at university. "Ich lerne Deutsch" (I study German)" - "Ich studiere Deutsch (I study German at university"). Again, your German is brilliant.

Im vorliegenden Kontext ist meiner Meinung nach eindeutig "lernen" und nicht "studieren" das korrekte Verb. Aber da sind wir wohl unterschiedlicher Auffassung ;-) Ich kann einen Text, ein Buch, ein Dokument usw. eingehend studieren und zwar im Sinne einer eingehenden Prüfung. Wenn ich vom Lernprozess spreche, so verwendet man meiner Meinung nach im Deutschen "studieren" nur in Zusammenhang mit einem Studium an einer Uni.

Mag sein, dass es da auch regionale Unterschiede gibt. Wenn mir jemand sagt, dass er "Italienisch studiert hat", gehe ich aber davon aus, dass er das an einer UNI gemacht hat. Aber wie gesagt, da gibt es wohl auch unter Muttersprachlern unterschiedliche Auffassungen ;-) Jedenfalls ist Richards Deutsch wirklich ausgezeichnet und ich habe größte Hochachtung vor seiner Leistung.

I´m a Swede that also speks German. I´m at an " operational FCO language level" and i´m right now at a stage when i have "struck a wall". I have difficulties getting any further..

Ich studiere Kommunikationswissenschaften mit dem Schwerpunkt Sprachlehrforschung und Fremdsprachenlinguistik. Ich versuche in meinem Studium herauszufinden, wie man Sprachen am besten lernen kann. Deine Methode ist nach meiner Meinung eine der erfolgreichsten: Vokabeln und Ausdrücke muss man "lernen", die Grammatik sollte man aber "erwerben" indem man Texte und Film-/Tonmaterial liest und hört. So bekommt man ein gutes Gefühl für die Sprache. Gute Arbeit, dein Deutsch ist sehr natürlich!

Wow! I'm impressed ... I'm a Cold War Veteran and I was stationed in Germany for 5 years. I left in 1988, before the glorious reunification of the country to one nation. I picked it up pretty well where I could understand it as well as I understand the English Language ... over the years I lost the ability to understand it. for instance just google "tagesthemen" ( the 1st link ) . Otherwise just google the word "mediathek" you will find some links that refer to the on-line tv shows posted by the different public broadcasting stations such as ZDF ARD ... etc.

I can confirm that translations are very useful, I had to do German-English translations when I studied in England for 9 months and that helped me a lot improve both my German and my English :) and I can understand that once you've learned a few languages it comes easy to learn new ones, at least if they still belong to the indo-european group :D I'm using my knowledge of German to learn Swedish for example :)

Wow, dein Deutsch ist echt gut! Man merkt, dass du die Sprache im Land gelernt hast. Du sprichst total frei und benutzt teilweise typisch umgangssprachliche Formulierungen (Partikel etc) :) Ich gehe nächsten Monat für ein halbes Jahr nach Holland und hoffe, ich kann die Sprache dort auch so schnell lernen!

Ach wie geil, ich habe ein Austauschjahr in Deutschland gemacht, bin aber aus Amerika, und es ist wirklich toll dein Video anzugucken einfach weil du die Sprache genau wie ich gelernt hast.. nur viel schneller! Und ich hab's mit 17 gelernt! Du hast voll die starke Anziehung für Sprachen.. wenn du das Fernsehen nach einem Monat schon verstehen konntest.. Krass. Ich bin sehr beeindruckt. Könnte man theoretisch eine ganze Sprache lernen, wenn man 1-2 Jahre in dem Land wohnt, wo es gesprochen wird?

Es ist erstaunlich, wie gut du in einem Satz einzelne Wörte akzentuieren kannst. Ich bin selbst ein Ausländer und lerne gerade meine fünfte Sprache ... mit 17 Jahren beherrsche ich drei Sprachen fließend. Wie viele Sprachen hast du in meinem Alter gesprochen? @poleag you use articles in front of names in German. Note how the sentence is a similar form to saying "I am THE teacher" . Although you could also say something like "Ich heisse Richard" which translates as "I am called Richard", as you wouldn't say "I am called the Richard". Or "Meine Name ist Richard" "My name is Richard".
BTW. I am starting work in an hour at my first German job. Ich spreche nur ein bissen Deutsch, ich bin sehr nervös..
