Here's how you can tell a great fighter: Muhammad Ali beat: Sonny Liston. Floyd Patterson. Cleveland Williams. Ernie Terrell. Joe Frazier. Ken Norton. George Foreman. Earnie Shavers. THAT is what you call greatness.
unbelievable that it took lewis 8 rds to knock out a totally disinterested out of shape tyson. tyson was presenting his chin to lewis all nite and didnt throw one decent punch. but it still took lewis 8 rds to get the job done these 2 did spare when they were younger lewis resorted to running around the ring and holding on to tysons arms, tyson got a bloody lip and lewis got a busted nose. they had to stop the session because tyson was starting to rough lewis up big time
Correct! But the Tyson boot-lickers are not interested in the facts. Some of them believe that Mike is still the champion of the world. As far they're concerned, this fight never even happened. They are lunatics.
@fred19992010 Dont get me wrong i love Tyson, his early fights were awesome but the fact remains he got in the ring with 2 world class fighters and beat non of them and i hate the shit about he was never the same after prison, Lewis wanted Tyson before he went to jail.
@fred19992010 Well that's a load of crap, if Mike fought Lennox in the mid to late 80s or early 90s, Mike would win knock out, hands down. Lewis knows it and everyone knows it.
Who did Mike beat in his prime? Tony Tucker, Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes (old but still great, he went on beating a prime undefeated Ray Mercer, yet Mike's the only guy to stop him, even Holyfield couldn't), Razor Ruddock... You clearly don't know jack about Tyson...
Sure, Holmes was still good, but hardly GREAT at age 38. The rest were never great fighters. Tucker? BAHAHAHA. Spinks, a puffed-up light heavyweight? BAHAHAHA. Razor Ruddock? Even Tommy Morrison knocked out Ruddock much quicker than Tyson. BAHAHAHA.
That's all you got? Tyson beat Tony Tucker, Michael Spinks, and Razor Ruddock? Who writes your gags? Seinfeld?
@fred19992010 My God you are stupid, okay Larry Holmes at 38 went on to beat prime Ray Mercer, who'd just come off a mad-as TKO win against undefeated Tommy Morrison and go the distance with Holyfield, Mike's the only guy to stop him. Tucker was 34-0, 28 KOs, the undefeated heavyweight champ. Spinks was a heavyweight for 3 years, so. Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore were light heavyweights, yet they fought great and heavyweight...
@fred19992010 Razor Ruddock was a devastating puncher, who'd TKOd Michael Dokes in 4, even though he was the underdog. Both Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe refused to fight him, Tyson defeated him twice. Tommy Morrison beat Ruddock when he was over-the-hill, Ruddock wasn't the same after the two Tyson fights and even then Ruddock floored Morrison in Round 1.
Clearly you don't know jack about boxing, Tyson's style and record clearly prove that he was a great fighter.
Ruddock was a devastating puncher - but that's all. Michael "Coke-head" Dokes is the only fighter of note you can list that Ruddock beat?
How can a fighter's STYLE prove that he is a great? You are talking out of your behind. What about chin, heart, stamina, longevity, punching power, championship status?
No fighter has ever been regarded as GREAT without beating other greats, and you did not list any greats on Tyson's record, except an over the hill Larry Holmes. FAIL.
@fred19992010 Oh so if you beat a great fighter that means you're great? Bullcrap, that means Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman are great for beating Lennox Lewis, you're ridiculous.
Ruddock was a devastating puncher, yes, and he could take a hell of a punch, as he showed in the Tyson fights. Tyson was able to defeat him twice, at his best...
Tony Tucker was an undefeated heavyweight champion (34-0 with 28 KOs), Mike beat him UD...
Chin - Just ask Lennox about Tyson's chin, for 8 round he took more punishment than anyone could. Against Buster Douglas, he took deadly punches all night long and still remained on his feet after that brutal uppercut which would knock anyone down (it took 4 more vicious hooks to floor him).
@fred19992010 Heart - Tyson had loads of heart, when he was totally unprepared against Douglas (he'd been going to strip clubs and screwing Jap chicks before that), he took his best hits for 10 rounds the way no one could. Against Lennox, he took his brutal power punches all over his face and head, without giving up, until the end of Round 8, which made Lennox respect the hell out of him as a fighter (and this was an over-the-hill Tyson).
What kind of a "champion" hangs out drinking in strip clubs and screwing around in the days leading up to a fight?
That's the trouble with you guys who are blinded from reality by the Tyson myth. Every single time Tyson ever lost a fight, you come up with a whole load of bullcrap excuses.
When Tyson lost to Douglas, the first thing you all said is "Oh, Tyson had trouble with his woman, that's why he lost."
When Lennox lost to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman, its because he didn't take those fights seriously at all... Its the same thing with Tyson-Douglas, the difference is that Tyson, even when unprepared, could take tremendous punishment for ages, it took hell to put him away, whereas Lennox would go after one punch, but Tyson would be psycologically tormented after a loss, whereas Lennox would come back stronger. To each, his own.
@truebeliever786 tyson ducked lewis for years anyone that tyson got bet by lewis moped d floor with them holyfield, douglas he even bet klithcko lewis was a great fighter in his prime when he reached his real potential he could control range and distance a lot like holyfield could thats why tyson struggled with guys like him as good as tyson was he never would have bet lewis people rate prime tyson when he was 19 with kustamato but he never fought a good fighter in those years they were bums
@elsheilsio260 I agree with you, that's why my take on the whole issue is that, Tyson from the mid-90s to 2000, loses to Lennox by UD and from 2000 onwards, he loses to Lennox by knockout, as we saw.
Yes, controlling range is important with Tyson, but a prime Tyson was a great combination fighter, after he stupidly sacked Kevin Rooney, his new dumb trainers made him a head-hunter rather than the smart scientific fighter that he was.
He knocked out Michael Spinks in 1 round (whose record was 31-0, with 21 KOs), Michael Spinks was a great fighter up to that point, he'd just TKOd the hard punching Gerry Cooney. He beat Tony Tucker, who was 34-0, with 28 KOs, and far bigger that Tyson (as big as Lennox Lewis). He TKOd the great Larry Holmes (even though Holmes was old, he was still great, as he went on to beat a prime undefeated Ray Mercer and go the distance with Holyfield).
im not saying tyson wasn't good one of the most entertaining fighters that ever graced the planet but along side the greats of the heavyweight division id rate him close to dempsey dempsey was a animal like tyson but once he came into the ring with a technical boxer a solid technical boxer there was always going to be one winner tyson would not beat the frazier's the foremans the louis the marciano's the all time greats he just lacked that demension of getting out of a true battle
@elsheilsio260 Yeah I rank Tyson at the same level as Dempsey, but below Frazier, Foreman, Louis, Marciano, Holmes and Ali etc... plus Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, but to me, he's still a great fighter, a legendary fighter... Check my list on my page...
@fred19992010 Wrong, because Holyfield was also a very good puncher and so was Ray Mercer (as he showed against Tommy Morrison), yet Tyson stopped Holmes, no one else could do it, except him...
Frank Bruno's alright, I didn't include him, because Tyson's best victories are against Tony Rucker, Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes and Razor Ruddock. Tyson was great, the way he fought, his heart, his chin, his power and his scientific style show it all, youngest champ ever.
Great fighters do NOT pay out millions of dollars to avoid facing a particular fighter, like Tyson paid Lennox Lewis in 1996, just before he got smacked around by Evander Holyfield. Did Joe Louis ever pay out millions of dollars to avoid certain fighters? Marciano? Ali? Frazier? Holmes? Holyfield?
If Tyson was a great fighter, what does that make Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield, Danny Williams, and Kevin McBride? After all, they all kicked his ass.
@fred19992010 Being great doesn't neccessarily mean that one beats a great fighter... That's bullcrap. Its about ones heart, passion, determination, skill and Mike had it all. As I said, Tony Tucker, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks and Razor Ruddock show Mike's greatness.
Like I said, Larry Holmes may have been old but even at old age he fought really well, he went on to beat Ray Mercer and go the distance with Holyfield, who couldn't stop him, but Tyson could in 4 rounds!
Knocking out Holmes means Tyson had power. Is that supposed to be a great revelation? Everyone knows Tyson could punch.
The fighters on your list of Tyson's "great" victories is a joke. I'm surprised you didn't include Frank Bruno and Francois Botha. What about Tyrell Bigss also?
Holmes relied on his legs to get him away from big punchers. Very few mobile fighters have good legs at 38. Very, very few.
Tyson is NOT an all-time great! He was very, very good, but not great.
Quote: "Wrong, because Holyfield was also a very good puncher and so was Ray Mercer (as he showed against Tommy Morrison), yet Tyson stopped him, no one else could do it, except him..."

Tyson paid Lewis the $4m, then gave up the belt as well. How's THAT for a scared little pussy of a "heavyweight champion"?
That's when I lost the respect I used to have for Tyson. What kind of a champion gives up his belt to avoid another fighter? Did Muhammad Ali ever do that? Hell no!
@fred19992010 hahaha u can really make up a story...u idiot lewis gave tyson 10 million to avoid him as lewis clearly knew its not worth getting killed in the ring against tyson so he waited a decade to fight him....
stop making up story faggot i lost respect for that british cunt after that.....dont ever call lewis a champion the guy who paid tyson 10 million to aviod him i mean that was like lewis 99% of earnings hahahha and 0.1% earning to tysons account
Now since even a five year old child can check the internet and see that Tyson paid Lewis $4,000,000 in 1996 to avoid fighting him, everyone reading this can now see that you are just a childish little cunt. Have you even finished school? You are way too stupid to converse with. You are so dumb that I am done with you. You are a total idiot.
hahhahah nice try asshole but at the end of the day tyson was out of his prime and old where was ur lewis in the late 80s? o yea hiding and waiting for tyson to get old hahhahah
You dumbfuck idiot. In the late 80's Lewis was in the Olympics knocking out Ridiculous Bowe. He only turned pro in 1989, so how he was he in hiding, you ignorant cretin?
lol mike tyson was way past his prime and much smaller, lol congrats lennox. Also congrats for twice being knocked out cold by B level fighters in your prime
