I'm making a pair of soft soled moccasin boots, the tutorial I'm following has a welting but I'm not sewing on a hard leather or vibram sole but rather coating the bottoms with a combination of tire grindings and barge cement or shoe goo. I might include the welting for general purposes but my feet are very sensitive so I'm wary of the extra bulk.

Could you please tell me the purpose of welting on a shoe? Does it perform a function other than looks?

@2JobsStillPoorUSA Welting adds additional water resistance to the shoe, and it's what the outsole is stitched to.
