You are King ....Sir...this hit the spot ... I cant stop smiling ...thank you ..my head moves like yours and you look like my best friend ..who also plays bass...amazing!!!
Do you give skype lessons??? I think you're absolutely amazing; I'm an absolute beginner based in Toronto and I'm looking for someone who can give me lessons. I just purchased my first bass, a 5-string Ibanez SR705 Please email me at dara.njeri1@gmail.com if you offer lessons. Hope to hear from you soon!
Marlowe, man you're soooooo kra-z...I really love your vids because you know how to groove. Your head is outta control because of the groove! Keep jammin brother, we love ya down in So. Fl.
Bernard Edwards is one of the few musicians with so much style that anybody can recognize him within hearing only 3 or 4 notes. The sad thing is that everybody's misstaking him (and Chic) for a disco musician...it's FUNK, 80's electro-funk but still FUNK.
@tbcass right on ;) i'm currently reading Peter Shapiro's Turn The beat Around which explains all that
btw i've already read 4 other books from Allia editions and they're all absolute dope: Peter Guralnick's Sweet Soul Music, Lloyd Bradley's Bass Culture, Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop and Nick Tosches' Unsung Heroes of Rock N' Roll...i can't recommend these books enough if you interrested in music and sociology, besides, the writing is usually very enjoyable and accurate.
@Fjord76 ....thank you ! I very much appreciate the tip off on these books. And may I just say as an aside, that this bass player up here has put a giant smile on my face. Natural groove. I appreciate it more than words can say.
@Fjord76 First, I checked out some of your vids, and really nice playing!
You're right about Bernard; he was one of a kind. He's the reason I play bass. But Chic most certainly was disco. They were, of course, *funky* disco, but still disco. Some record stores actually had disco sections which was where Chic records were. They marketed themselves as disco, and rightly so since they didn't have the "nastiness" of funk.
Whatever you call 'em, I'm sure we'd agree their importance is undeniable.
@BassByTheBay yeah you're right; that's what i learnt in the book i'm talking about below: the whole disco movement got fucked up by all this "stayin' alive and village people" crap, when mainstream talentless producers tried, and succeeded, to make money with that...as usual :/
Bernard is so good, allways the right notes at the right places...i guess it's right to say he (they) changed the world cause absolutely everybody knows good times, le freak, upside down or this one for instance...
@BassByTheBay read le freak by Nile and you will realise that Nile and Nard were cid heads which I always thought from the word go. The fact that it was a commercial success does not mean that those 2 boys were absolute geniuses.
Beautiful rendition by bassplayalong - can you do Disco Inferno for us some time?
I love your videos, I'm a drummer and my husband's a bass-player. We watch you all the time and have learned so much, and we love your nonchalant expression, lol
I'm trying to learn this and I've pretty much got it now except for the hammer ons at 0.21. I can't quite see where his fingers are and all the tabs I've found on the internet don't sound right. Can any one help??
Whenever I want to double check a line or gain some insight into possible fingering/technique I know I can come here. Marlowe has a great ear and pays attention to all the details in a given song's bass line. Thanks, man - you're a diamond in the rough when it comes to Youtube bass demonstrations.
@kafcin MarloweDK is paying respects to Bernard's original part on this tune. To add more licks would take away from the tune and most importantly, the groove. Great job MarloweDK.

@Fjord76 Yes, Disco was commercialized and sanitized corporate music that used Funk style beats but had none of it's Soul.
