This is NOT sped up. Listen to the engine. It is actual footage that I took first thing in the morning when the pilot decided we had a chance to make it to our next site. We had been weathered for a couple of days. I started taking the video about 5-8 minutes after lift off. Visibility was much worse at the start.
It seems most of my video's don't do the experience justice, but I know I was there for them all ;)
judjing by the windscreen this was in an astar. Definately sped up, no question about that. And if im am flying low i would rather be going fast then slow, airspeed is your friend And seems fairly normal for rotor wing operations in parts of the year. Flying fires visibility is quite often worse than that. I would say he had at least 1 mile visibility and that is suitable for a VFR flight.
If this is with an experienced pilot i see nothing that is unsafe.
Kind of situation normal where I operate for half the year. Since visibility is pretty poor seen through recordings, I'd guess the pilot had a mile at least which is certainly legal for rotorcraft in Canada. And at that altitude speed is life if you puke the engine. Unlikely in a Jetbox but it does happen. You can ask to have ops restricted by visibility; just say you don't want to go if it drops below 3 for example.
@aligerous You would think that it sped up, but is not. This is the original raw video that I personally took. It is just one of many times that I found myself in a position where I had no control or say. This pilot was acting like a "Cowboy" who took a risk that would be fine if he was by himself, but should have not when he had a passenger.
@kingfreakinkong I'll take your word for it. I'm sorry you were in that situation. You didn't mention what the flight was for but I think I would be having a discussion with his boss or the FSDO along with a copy of this video if it were me. Glad your OK. The part I like the best is the fact that at least you know this was ridiculous and unsafe flying.
You were right for being puckered, not the safest thing in the world to do....Im guessing this is a routine flight by a very high time pilot ....I hope.
