i got a clamshell for $35 including shipping and the reason they only put one expandable memory slot in was because they wanted to keep the size down and require no cooling system
I didn't not upgrade any of the hardware on this clamshell. But I am considering getting a 466 MHz one. I have to agree they were and for the most part still are the best laptops ever.
I received my Graphite 466Mhz Firewire a week or so ago. Bought it off of ebay for $135.00 shipped. It's great. I put a 100Gig hard drive in it. Took out the airport card and put it in my Blueberry Clamshell. I'm using a Belkin F5D 8053 wireless N USB adapter for really fast internet on the Graphite. Installed Tiger 10.4.11 Works great. I'm very happy with it. I hope you get another one and tweak the crap out of it. So much fun.
I wish I could but I sold this clamshell last year. It is possible I know that for sure. I can show you it on my iMac g3 which has the same specs. To be honest safari 3 runs better on the old g3's
Too bad you sold it. Did you upgrade it? It would take 512Mb of ram added to the onboard ram for a total or 640Mb. A 120Gig hard drive. A DVD/CD. and run Tiger great. Also there are wireless N USB adapters that will run on it at way better speeds than the internal airport card. I have owned two. One 300Mhz another 366Mhz and just bought a 466Mhz today. Tough, cool looking and unique. Still decent after all these years. How many other laptops are there like that?
10.2 on a Clamshell iBook? That's good enough, and judging by the boot up time, upgrading to Panther might kill it. Good luck with the collection dude. I have a Clamshell in my collection too.
10.3 I think actually ran the best on the Clamshell. Mine is currently running 10.4 just because support for Panther dropped dramatically after they released 10.5. Its bearable, but I wish I had gotten a 512mb stick of RAM for it instead of the 256.
There isn't nearly enough room in the clamshell casing to house another RAM port.
In addition, the Aluminum Powerbook G4's are great machines, but just be weary of the logic boards on them. Tons of Aluminum Powerbooks have bad Lower RAM Ports, which means that the maximum loadable RAM drops from 2GB to 1GB.
thats not the processor making that noise. thats the hd. and that things gonna crash...SOON does not sound good

Startup prolly took so long cause the battery was dead, so the comp was trying to save power.

why dont you try to buy a macbook air superdrive. a external hard drive and possibly a ram upgrade would make this kill some older pc's. good luck!
TheLegomaniac25 1 year ago
@TheLegomaniac25 the superdrive would most likely not work on the clamshell.

you might be able to get away with tiger with a 366mhz version
pimpdog93 1 year ago
You need to upgrade the hard drive. 40gb drives are not that expensive.

I used to have an Indigo one, but I sold it. Now I am trying to buy another one.
Pity about the disc drive. At least it gives you something to work on, if you are up for it.
