  • He's still incredible, but his backup singers(or at least one of them) are trying their best to ruin it for him

  • Ya gotta luv this guy.

  • 71 years old & He can still belt it out

    I'm in Awe

  • About a Billion 25 year olds wish they had the power this guy can deliver at 72 in one note! Nuff said. In his prime absolutely the BEST voice anywhere. Orbison was immaculate but he did not have the power in his chops of this guy. Elvis was incredible but did not have the voice control and sustain to hold a note like Jay Black. Sadly under-rated

  • just as good as back in the day or better... glad I saw this ...

  • This isn't Portal.

    WTF!

  • I THINK HE IS JUST AWESOME

    Love his music

  • Still a GREAT performer. Needs a different band, they need singing lessions. So off key. This is for ALL of us Kids (yes kids) from the 60's. We have some GREAT music. It will never DIE. Hip-Hop & Rap can never hold a candel to what we have!!!

  • he is alive??????

  • Far out Jay ! What a voice. Wish you the best.

  • All you younk people; It really does not get any better than this! Look up the history of Jay Black, and draw your own opinion. Can't deny, a time tested voice.

  • Christ. Older than dirt and looking every second of it, backed up by a tone deaf band and singers (seriously WTF?), but still that voice manages to give me goosebumps as well as it did the first time I heard him.

What I don't get though, is how the hell anyone, especially someone as up himself as this dude (and it is and always has been obvious that he KNOWS what an impressive instrument his voice is) would allow himself to go onstage with backup like that.

  • There's more to being a musician than being able to play an instrument or sing. You're supposed to AID the artist in making the song the best it can be. When he got to 2:01, he'd have held that note if his heart had burst. Sure, I'm sure he's proud of himself, as he should be, and that he likes the adulation, and why not--he deserves it.Above all, he IS a CRAFTSMAN of his art and gives his BEST-for his fans AND others. I love him. Please, pray for him and stop talking negatively about him.

  • @salliannable Oh come on. I'm a fan too. And I'm not a really singer, I'm only a guitarist. I was just curious! Geez, sorry for my ignorance! Never meant to insult him.

  • Now I got what I'm saying. Why is his vibrato out of control like Donovan?

  • Whoa, I don't know much about singing but why is his voice doing way down and up constantly? Like Donovan now.

  • @rockfan363 No, you evidently DON'T know much about singing. Down and up? Hell, he was doing a helluva job considering the band and back-up he was getting. Who the hell were the munchkins in there backing him up---I take that back. That was NOT "backing". I did hear someone help him out around the 1:58 part; the ONLY time I heard any decent help, including the musicians. He was obviously in distress and it sounded like they were trying to KILL him. (see other rockfan363 post for rest reply

  • @salliannable I don't, you are right. Sorry for my ignorance. I'm just a guitarist. Thanks for the info btw.

  • @rockfan363 sorry i was so snotty. just gets my dander up if i think someone's knocking him. he's trying so hard and i'm just afraid his health is going to do him in. i've only been a fan for about two months and wish i'd left country music alone long enough to have heard him when hestarted back in 60s. i sure missed out on some great music for a lot of years. there's no "only" a guitarist. you're a musician. i play keys and strum a little. I only had two posts because i had too much to say.

  • @salliannable Yeah, wasn't trying to dude. And yeah that's what I am afraid of too.

  • JAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is so thoroughly enjoyable it defies description. The song is such a bitch to sing as it is! I love his sense of humour about it. The quality of his voice in the non falsetto register is so rich! The falsetto part? Well, I'll attempt it when I'm 71 and let you know how it goes!

  • I think he's fantastic!! For that age...to still sing that strong???

  • To all you folks who have trashed Jay Black because of this performance when he was sick and performing anyway, I invite you to watch Jay Black and the Alley Cats on youtube and you'll see a 72 year old Jay Black absolutely knock it out of the park, a phenominal performance by any standards. No one has, No one does and No one ever will sing Cara Mia like Jay Black!!

  • @cbparts1 You just said what I've been saying...I've put several comments on here regarding people talkin' shit about Jay...and a few people have decided to argue with me about it....wasting their breath....Jay Black is the VOICE and always will be....Dawn

  • I had the privilege of backing Jay on stage many years ago...he was and still is a hell of a talent and performer.

  • To all the naysayers, negative commentors, etc, just do this.

Listen to this here, but do not watch the image.

Then think, I wonder how long ago Jay did this live performance.

My point is, for those who have not yet listened to this particular 'clip', before you do, lose the visuals and, after Jay is finished, listen to it again with the visuals, you WILL be amazed!.

  • God bless you bro!!!

My ears don't..either, but my brain filled in the gaps.

Youngsters, go listen to your Kid Rock or Vanilla ice, or whatever.

  • I've seen him do this song much more recently than this and he hit ALL of the notes. Incredible! STILL a legend AND a legendary song!!! Thanks, Jay Black.

  • BRAVO JAY ! you still got it Sweetie..

and Looking Wonderful, yes he is aging Gracefully ppl !

  • Comment removed

  • Take a look at the younger version on YouTube Jay Black - cara mia

    What eyes....

  • Love,love,love this.

  • A difficult song for most men a third his age, what a voice!!!

  • You cant beat the oldies he still got it

  • Forget it Jay !! You just don't have it anymore ! ha ha ha ! To much booz and women and fat foods !! Stop where you are at and don't make a fool of yourself !! Ohhh God this is Embarrasing !!

  • @nicktesla45 Ya know, you are wasting your breath talkin' shit about Jay Black...sooo not cool...he has a fiercely protective following of passionate fans...

  • @DFbighair So true! We love Jay, including his every utterance. And most of us, at least all Jayettes, have spent countless hours listening to The Voice!

  • @Agrace39 You must be a psychopath to make a moronic statement like that.

Pops is finished. Old, fat, bald, broke, can't sing - WTF are you smoking with your crack?!

  • AWESOME SQUARED!!

  • Oh. My. Heavens.

  • amazing voice, he's the BEST!!

  • Just saw him on a PBS special and he was flawless. Still a powerhouse voice. Damn!!

  • his backup singers are terrible. Jay is still great.

  • still the most amazing voice from any genre

  • Omg...Absolutely amazing!!

  • that voice gets to me everytime...... best ever on cara mia :)

  • luv u man you da man always an forever jay

  • Freaking awesome

  • Jay will always be the voice! The guitarist behind him is my boy Jay Blatt! Jay's son!

  • jay you are da man!!!!! i know old age is there my man but you did the best u can and i appreciated every minute of it

    god bless you dude

  • He did just fine. I think the sound wasn't balanced correctly (I don't know much about the technical details, so if anyone else does, please comment). If his mic had been balanced correctly, you would have heard more of him rather than the backups and the band.

  • Just viewed a video of Jay & the Americans from Shindig, circa 1965, singing Cara Mia. Father time spares no one, but I'll be damned if that beautiful voice is just as strong as in the day. Great song! Great & talented singer.......

  • Jay has had some issues with gambling. There were different Jay and the Americans over time and within the last few years sold back the rights to the name of the group. Apparently blew that money also to gambling in short order. Sings now with a group of 4 backup singers. can not recall name.....BUT .....he has a great voice regardless of age

  • we got to see him sing @ a Park one time, after singing Cara Mia, i yelled out "Encore"!!! he heard me & said OK, Come see me @ my Next concert!!

I love this song! I sing this one in the shower all the time!!

  • Jay still has it!! God Bless him!!

  • oh my gosh! I saw Jay Black on a "Doo Wop" special on my local PBS station. He can STILL belt out "CARA MIA".....I just love him!

  • Jay Black and Roy Orbison two of the greatest singers from the golden age of Rock

  • Hold a note when like that when you are 20, Good Luck!!

  • He's still got it. Damn.

  • Excuse me SkidrowJosephine, Jay Black is not losing it. For one can you name many people that can do this at 70 +, I dont think so, and as for the band, his son is in that band, I couldnt think of a better honor, than playing in the band for a 70+ yr old father, that can still belt out a song like that.

  • I think he did a fine job! There are young people that cant do what he did in this video and theres nothing wrong with them...

  • Yikes! This guy's lost it. Nothing wrong with that, but his band guys probably need the money that he still draws - which can't be much at that age, and waning performance.

  • My god he still has that incredible voice jay Black your the man

  • listen to that voice. gee very early 60'sthey recorded this song and even over all those years Ray has still got that magic voice. it's so great that we can still have these great artist sing for us. beautiful.

  • From far away:-Austria- he is great!!!

  • This is one phenomenal voice at any age...my favourite American singer!

  • @brexander1 he truly is awesome...... hes the voice of jay and the americans

  • Great singer...still a great voice...thank you Jay...you're wonderful !

  • without a doubt one of the greatest voices in music.

  • I actually think he sounds just as good, though I miss the Americans in the background.

  • Jay has lost nothing. I confess to preferring the original Americans backing vocal however.

  • HMMMM well at that age I would say good I know I cant do that at any age

  • Got To Give It Too Him..... Go Jay......

  • in this age of hype it good to see the real thing! someone that isn't a flash in the pan with real talent!

  • O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G band. One of the best ever. They're like the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli; they actually get better over time and can still, years later, put on a stunning performance. I'm 30 years old and I appreciate bands like Jay and the Americans very, very much. They came out when music WAS MUSIC. What's on the radio today is garbage and the farthest thing from music ever.

  • Props to Jay. This version ain't bad at all considering he obviously looks and feels like shit

  • Amazing! How does he still sing like that?

  • Jay black is the man 10/5 It does not get any better than that . God bless jay

  • he is singing from a different part of his body?

  • @lindaveee , LOL, that is just a joke hun. I am sure the audience knew what he meant., As we tend to get older we have more problems with a gassy tummy., Thats all he was trying to say. I think Ninja would agree with that. LOL.

  • poor

  • That may be Jay Black's son Jason, but he's nice looking himself. And I think that if

I had a father with the voice that Jay has and can still hit those high notes like he still does and he's in his 70's now, I would be mighty proud to be a member of my father's band. My own father will be 71 soon.

  • this guy should have listened to his doctor

  • The one and only Jay ........... Loving Jay

  • thanks so very much for putting this on markel! One of the greatest voices of all time. Sure would love to see him someday! God Bless you!

  • Always loved Jay, and Cara Mia is my favorite song that he does. Even at his age he still is able to hold his own. Keep going Jay !!

  • Priceless ....

  • A True Performer! Bravo! Thanks so much for posting!

  • This mans voice is awesome. I still get chills down my spine when he sings it.

  • at 1:49 worried looks

  • Well, well, well. Mr Jay Black. You changed the way people listen to music. You pre ceeded Lou Christie. He followed you. Of course you were more vocal while younger. But, damn, you still have the pipes. Thank you so much for the memories that you have helped provide me. Bless you.

  • Even at his age he still has the pipes. Super!!

  • A million people on stage and still sounds like this

  • If you beleive in God, can we say God blessed Jay Black.

  • God bless you Jay for sharing your talents with us all these tears .Please keep them coming and Your music will last forever especially because you sure know how to not only sing but perform to th nth degree!!!!! Thanks!!!

  • The REAL JAY... he & Frankie Valli are the best vocalists EVER !

  • His band is great, I wish he could have held on to the name Jay and the Americans. He gambled to much and a judge made him put the name up for sell and the original member minus Jay bought it, and got a new lead singer. He still sounds good

  • Is he healthy? He looks like he's very ill.

  • pretty good for any age!!

  • wow...I love this man~! one of my vocal influences and at 20+ years older than I am, he can nail this song better than I ever could even in my "prime",,,bleeings and thanks to you Jay Black!

  • ????

  • Jesus, I love this man. I love it even more when he performs outdoors and is actually chain-smoking as he sings, but this is good enough. If he doesn't LOOK like a 5-pack-a-day wonder, I don't know who does. But still, he KILLS it....and I do mean that in the good way.

  • good job jay what a voice

  • OUCH !

  • please, give the man a break, he still sounds good, and he still has a gorgeous smile. I hope every man looks this good when they get over 60. Jay, if you read this, please come to Pittsburgh.

  • I love how he used to sing this song. He's not as good as he once was. Bit like the Beech Boys.

  • @peacemakerukuk Yes, he's not as good as he once was, but who is at that age? It's still a remarkable performance, especially since he can still hit (although not hold) high notes. Normally it gets harder and harder for a man to hit high notes as he ages.

  • Jay Black is NOT BATTLING with Cancer,it's just called OLD AGE.

  • @bojowilliam IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY,, PLEASE DONT SAY ANYTHING..

  • @bojowilliam whatever...he is the best

  • He needs new backing singers!

  • What a set of pipes.

  • not bad considering his age...at least he's still around to "sing"...does sound better than he looks.

  • @broozjooz72

Jay Black has been fighting cancer and the aging process you dumb god damn stupid son of a bitch. Who knows? Maybe you will one of the lucky ones. One thing is for sure, you won't get out of life without dying either you stupid god damn son of a bitch.

  • @MeThinksThus -I recently heard an interview Jay did live on Serius radio with Norm N. Nite. Jay said he has recently lost 70 lbs and all the 90 year old women in Florida think he's hot. Of course Jay, in his typical hilarious bawdy style embellished things and ask Norm if he was worried that he (jay) was going to say something that would get Norm in trouble with the FCC. Jay still has the pipes at age 72.

  • ouch !

  • NOWHERE has there been any news of Jay Black fighting cancer, come up with some news clips please!

  • Jay rocks!!!! the vocal range puts anything to shame that I have heard in years....

  • Great voice. This man is the cats ass.

  • not nice

  • Sorry you feel that way, but he is still the man even at 71.

  • say what you will....but the voice is still better than I've heard anyone else try to sing this song. What really gets me is he's still making a living doing it. So no matter the negative comments, the show will go on.

  • I don't understand all the negative comments, Hell this guy is 70 years old and he sings Cara Mia better than anybody who ever lived! Always has.

  • P.S. thanks for posting this I injoyed his interation with the audiance.

  • Not good for the voice to sing when you are this sick. His voice is still good and he should take care of it.

  • Hes slipping some, but still good at his age

  • what did say? were was he singing from????

  • Even sick with a cold Jay Black still sounds GREAT ...A++++++++

  • THE VOICE,!!

  • By the way - the young man with the goatee playing the guitar is Jay's son Jason.

  • Singing with an upper respiratory infection and bad cough, and sore throat, Jay did a remarkable job. Kudo's to Jay for singing under those circumstances.

  • Not bad for a 70 1/2 year old with a sore throat and respiratory infection who was ordered not to perform by his doctor!

  • @markel253 I Would Say Old Jay Done WONDERFULLY! Considering These Serious Problems He Had, Even With The Respiratory Infection He Can Still Belt It Out But All These Ignorant People On Here Don't Understand That Do They? And Leave Negative Comments, I Am A singer Myself And I Can Hear Quite Clearly There Is A Problem And I Understand It. I Also Can Tell That Everything Else In The Sound Mix Is Way Too Loud And Drowning Him Out . Jay Is Still More Than Capable Of Taking These Songs To The Max

  • @ninjabluewings I agree with you 100%, yeah of course like you said you can tell by his coughing there was a medical problem, yes the music was loud so he had to strain even more louder so he could be heard. My father was a musician, Ive been around music all my life. Its in their blood, they live for that next concert, they live for their music, they love the audience, and they wont let their fans down.

  • @Stkrista1024 Hi That's Great, Glad There Are Some People Listening Who Know What They Are Talking About, With A Singer Any Minor Problems Can Cause Voice Trouble, Let Alone Something Serious Like A Chest Infection, Even Like This Jay Can Still Out Perform Most Of Today's Old Rubbish And I Would Say No Doubt After He Got Over His Infection He Was Back On Top Form Again. God Bless The Golden Greats

  • @ninjabluewings Thank you Ninja, I used to sing some myself, I still do here at home. I was born in 59, but I still love the Oldies best. I always thought I was born about 7-10 yrs too late. LOL. I was watching the whole time he was singing, esp. when he put his hand up to his chest I knew he was physically hurting, and he had to hold on to his chest, to finish out those hight notes. I must sa y it alarmed me, but then im a music lover. The oldies will always be around in my house. Heart&Soul
