Seems like Bill Wyman wrote about this appearance in his book "Stone Alone." They didn't get the Stones' equipment shipped over to them in time, so they had to use whatever could be scrounged up. That's why the cheap guitars with no straps (or even picks!) and Bill playing some acoustic six string instead of a bass.
LOL. I like Brian Jones at 4:33. He did not know exactly how to handle his guitar without a strap and he looked at Bill Wyman for trying to find why he is not in trouble with his bass guitar. :-)
Rise to the occasion? What occasion? Miming for a French TV program, with no guitar straps, and with Bill Wyman with not even a bass but a 6 string guitar? Brian Jones has to mime playing barre chords while Keith Richards has to mime only licks... how can you pretend to play rhythm guitar without a strap? That's why he's having "trouble"! It's obvious they're not taking this thing seriously, they're laughing their heads off, especially when off-camera! "Rise to the occasion"! Lol!
@kidcalabria It's for this reason that the dream is stronger than reality and a strap will not change this fact. The Rolling Stones have allways given music and dream to their fans.
@kidcalabria Ofcourse,it's all a big joke ,especialy with hindsight, still, this was in their early days when they weren't that big ,and being invited for French television in '64 was somewhat of a honour, how shitty provided they were. All European 'pop shows'in those days sucked, and weren't as slick as their U.S. counterparts.
Still the rest of the band gave (despite the circumstances)a spritely performance.
Although Jones still was cool in his inimitable way.
@slmUSA Thanks for comment. I presume Michael Jackson saw it when he was only 5. Probably, Mickel Jaggerson was the spiritual father of Michael Jackson in moonwalking dance. I invite you to watch Mick Jagger giving an awesome lesson of moonwalking. In Youtube search : watch?v=Ov6lQZKm6y0

LOL. Mick doesn't seem to concerned about his lip-synch on "Carol", but it improves on "It's All Over Now".

Keith steals the show here ,with French cap, and has ,unlike Brian Jones ,no trouble whatsoever dealing with his strapless guitar ,What a trooper.
Definitly shapes of things to come ,Jones not being able to rise to the occasion.
He looked cool nonetheless though.
This is why YouTube is so amazing, Stones fans from the beginning ,and still seeing things we never saw before.
Thisis a rare treat. Thanks.
