@GanEdenAustralia@femi1glass - I believe that for the body of "Project Blackwood", Ford Australia took the body panels from the then-current Granada and widened the body about four inches in the middle to fit the existing XC Falcon platform.
@JBofBrisbane Ah no, the XD Falcon was only loosely influenced by the Granada&was a different animal entirely-only the headlamps are the same. When new, Wheels Magazine showed photographs of XD clay mockups-at one point they were going to use carry-over XC doors, and an idea for the utes was to simply use the XD front with the XC body from the firewall back.
The approach that you describe was used on the Mitsubishi Magna however - being literally a widened Japanese FWD Galant...
@FODASSEZOR Yeah that's exactly it. I think it's a brilliant ad, especially the part about passing the truck, but the economy bit is over-reaching, especially as they most economical engine they had to offer was a 3.3L single barrel carby 6, hardly the most efficient unit going around
@ives2071 - in the early eighties, in answer to Holden's 4-cylinder Commodore, Ford built a development hack XD Falcon with a 2.3-litre four from Brazil. It was noisy, rough, and actually used more petrol than the sixes to drag the Falcon carcass around. Needless to say, it never went into production.
@JBofBrisbane They were serious about putting the 4-cylinder into the XE Falcon, but thankfully Ford saw the light on that one. They unfortunately look like they are repeating this approach with putting a 2.0L Ecoboost 4-cylinder unit into upcoming Falcons...
As it was, the Holden Starfire 4-cylinder (literally the Holden 2.85 6-cylinder with 2 cylinders lopped off) did not fare well with the Commodore of the time and was dropped. Ditto the NZ market Holden VN Berlina, which had a 2.0L 4...
@ives2071 Well, the "4 cylinder" in the pictures looks like an 18R equipped Corona, and as someone who had one of those as well as a few Falcons I can say that the economy wasn't that different. The six did everything so easily it wasn't outrageously thirsty. Better than the equivalent Commodore and heaps roomier than a Japanese 4. It's like the new Camry uses about the same as an FG - I know what I'd rather drive...
Yeah thats when the type of Aussie like John Wood was still considered a soft cock hence why he is the one buying the 4 Cylinder guess you could say John Wood types are like the people who actually support the ETS !! SOFT COCKS !
fuck the add guys lowered this Falcon a bit. no standard XD Ive seen sits this nice, and I love X series.

"Economy that makes some of your small cars..... well, look even better by comparison."
Don't get me wrong I love these cars, I own two of them but even trying to convince anyone they're economical is ridiculous.

Great old commercial!
Thanks for sharing!
The XD was fully Australian designed although the body was based on a German Ford.
Very distinctive, very "masculine" styling.
