@7188181 - Apparently you think I'm referring to the HBO fanfare as disco music. I am not.
Instead, I'm referring to the vocal music that accompanies the "Making Of" portion, "A Closer Look: Inside HBO's City". Per the final credits, this is song is called "Illusions". And yes, it has a disco beat.

Actually I'm in my 30's and saw this about a million times when it was originally running on HBO as a kid. At any rate, you sound like your in your 40's and don't even know how to use a cell phone.
Uhhhh the good 'ol daze!! I'm 32 now and have a need to relive these kinda moments in time. RIP mama...we had HBO, eveybody in the hood couldn't afford it. This theme was THE coolest at the time! Thanks for the memories.
What HBO should do in 2008 for the 25th Anniversary of this intro is re-create it. Of course make it different and more modern with CGI, but with a similar look and feel of the '83 version while using the same music from the original!
We had HBO back then when I was a kid, I have all the HBO channels now as an adult. This would be a nice nod to the roots we remember from years ago. (Hint Hint HBO Execs!)
@SkirtsBar. Sorry, you cant get feeling with CGI lol. I personally can't stand CGI. Its just a nifty name for a cartoon. I cant beleive with the millions of dollars the movie industry makes they cant think of new and interesting special effects that arent cgi. star wars *cough*.. Just has no heart anymore..
@psykick77 cgi is a lot cheaper than this thing right here.where do you get all the thoys, the expensive camera the lighting and a crew of 20 that should work on it when you can employ jusy 5 for the same amount work on a computor today. This sequence is nice but ..
I worked for Liberty Studios when they created this open - I designed the type for "Feature Presentation" and shot the stuff that you see once you go into the "O" on an animation stand. We had to make several different titles to run before different types of programming. They were all done at the same time. "Feature Presentation" was the one most commonly played.
You and the other crew members did an amazing job and certainly a memorable one. My all time favorite, I still get goosebumps, and the score couldn't have been better, with the crescendo and then BOOM! you're in space, going to a disco in the stars.
I maybe wrong, but I think this is the original version of this sequence. Judging from what I see here, it was to be used for HBo THEATRE to kick off the stage acts and musicals they used to show (like Plaza Suite, Wait Until Dark, Snow White, etc.). There was even a miniature of HBO THEATRE.
They probably saw how good it looked and started using it for everything else. Starting with "Feature Presentation" since it used the same music.
I first saw this intro in '83 while in Anchorage, Alaska; My dad and I were in a hotel room between rounds of patching a Cessna together to fly home. I was 16 then...scary!

State of the art, '82! They even have computers to do some of the work. How cutting-edge.
But they had to build all this stuff physically - difficult to imagine, nearly 30 years later. But at the time, it really did look spectacular.
I am really amused that they commissioned special disco-themed music for the soundtrack of this short film.

@hebneh You must have little knowledge of music. It doesn't even remotely resemble disco.

For God's sake, why don't they return to using this??? It's light years better than anything else!!

HBO needs to rerun this intro once in a while. that and the multicolor one from 1987.

I wish they'd explain how they did the spinning HBO. Like was it stop motion over blue screen or something?

Ha, I like the disco music!
At any rate, this is really incredible.

Man those songs they were playing throughout this feature were so dated sounding and annoying. Illusions bah, bah, bah. Yuk!
