I heard this song when I was only 5 years old sang by the Vienna Boys choir. Song is magic for me. Best 2nd version sang by The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight. This is the closest to the choir group I have found.

Solomon Linda's version does not resemble this at all. He certainly had nothing to do with the lyrics only vaguely the whimmawhip. Barely!

Pete seeger transcribed it from a 78 ,it was played on the radio over 1 billion times , a fund was established for solomon lindas heirs but after the lawyers got into it they got nothing
when the lion king was shown in south africa they held up the money so the family could get something .

I love the Tremeloes and they do a great job here but who on earth wrote this song? I guess it's best that the lion sleeps but the lyrics are not exactly rocket science -donna

The original melody was written by Solomon Linda, in 1939. He was a South African goat herder. He never received a penny in royalties for what became one of the best selling songs of all time. The PBS special, "A Lion's Trail," is a great documentary that details the history of the songs, and the measures taken to ensure that Solomon Linda's grandchildren start receiving money for the song.

Well, the lyrics to "the lion sleeps tonight" may not be exactly rocket science, but no lyrics to any song is either, personally, but hey, who cares, it is still a great song.
