That's such a hard song to do - musically and vocally - amazing job on both parts! - especially the bass player & you singer dude, you got Peter down pretty well - actually the more I listen - you're all f-ing amazing - drummer - amazing, guitar dude - equally amazing - I'm so impressed! Gives me the inspiration to practice more on the guitar - THANK YOU!
I thought that was a very good cover. That is one of my favorite Genesis songs.
The only thing I didn't really care for was the vocals, but that was because he was imitating Peter Gabriel and I always thought Gabriel sounded pretty amateurish in Genesis. I liked Gabriel's expressiveness but it always annoyed me that he couldn't seamlessly blend his chest voice and head voice. His high notes have a totally different tonality than his lower notes.
You can do any other prog band with this guy on vocals, but not Genesis. Gabriel is such a difficult singer to do. The funny thing is it doesn't sound that way, but he is. It may even be easier to do Dio! Dio's a great singer, but what non-singers don't realize is that vibrato can actually make singing a lot easier. Gabriel sings lyrically and drills high notes WITHOUT vibrato and yet sounds confident WITHOUT volume or over-singing. However, this dude does none of that and simply accepts defeat.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that singing without vibrato is harmful. I think the article said that if you are singing properly, vibrato just happens naturally and if it's not happening then you are singing incorrectly. I suppose that's something the vocal pedagogues can debate.
"I did not mean that the overdubbed voice was "ironic""
I know.
"my comment was more general and meant to refer outside of the lyrical context, but thanks for reminding me of the lyrics..."
You ought to try to be more clear in your communication.
Also, you ought not to try to tell somebody that their perception of the song is "ironic" , when they're clearly reading the lyrics, and you, admittedly had forgotten.
It's mainly the drumming that bothers me. There is supposed to be this weird little drum-roll pattern during the verses which is supposed to give the song a certain mystery.
(Based upon my hearing of the original) I think Collins multi-tracked - which gave the percussive section that multi-layered feeling...(given that the drummer here has only 2 hands) maybe the band could have included (e.g.) congas...
I respect your opinion...actually I was not referring to his grace/ghost notes...I meant that (it sounded to me that) Collins multi-tracked what sounded like toms...I saw a live ~'71 version video (maybe on Belgium TV), and he sounded less "busy" than on the studio/NC version - so I thought this may have confirmed my thought on multi-tracking...I KNOW Collins was SO skilled that he may have been simply amazing me with what SOUNDED like multi-tracking (toms) on the studio/NC version...thanks...
OK...I will trust you (so far) on this one...and (assuming you're correct), then Collins gets double kudos...and, yes, that overdub on "tranquility" is noticeable...although, it is somewhat ironic that you feel it is eerie (because then it may not be "tranquil" for you!)...but some persons might consider the song subject to be "eerie"...another thing - I usually keep the volume down on this song because Collins' cymbal crescendos are too piercing for my ears...thanks again...
It's not "ironic" that the overdubbed voice is eerie. It's supposed to be... it follows the descriptor "strange" in that verse, so it's described as something other than normal by the very words of the song.
I think you're either confused about what irony is, or you don't understand the english language.
I did not mean that the overdubbed voice was "ironic"...instead, I meant that (it was ironic that) a person could get an "eerie" feeling with the word "tranquility" (i.e., I don't necessarily equate eerieness with being tranquil)...but, regarding the lyrical context itself, I did forget that "strange" precedes "tranquility" (and so this could lend to an eerie feeling)...my comment was more general and meant to refer outside of the lyrical context, but thanks for reminding me of the lyrics...
Bravi davvero!!... Peccato che il cantante è un pochino (ma proprio poco poco!) meno bellino di Peter Gabriel....Del resto P.G.ti toglie il respiro da quanto è bello!!!.... A parte gli scherzi, complimenti davvero!

A song like Salmacis is really hard to re-create as good as this band did.
The singer shows alot of enthusiasm and hits all the notes. I can tell he is a huge Genesis fan.
Musically speaking, the whole band is excellent. I am really impressed with everyone.

The singer needs to work on the accent a bit, and the drums need to shuffle a bit during the verses, but other than that, it's a pretty good cover.

I agree he needs to reduce his accent. He has a pretty good voice though

There was no multi-tracking of the drums on the original.
It's just ghost notes on the snare and the interplay of the ride and hi-hat that causes that illusion.
Check out some of Phil's playing with Brand X and you might make the same incorrect assumption about his playing.

Listen to the original track with very good headphones.
I use BOSE noise-canceling headphones.
There's simply nothing there as far as drum overdubs.
By the way, you have to love the vocal overdub on the word "tranquility". Eerie.
