I've already reseted my ipod (just the settings though) and it still doesn't work. For my ipod 2nd G 8gb it did the low light for like a couple seconds at first. I restarted it and it worked for like a week, then it just went dark. I left it for like 3 months and nothing happened. Same crap. Reeeeaaallly annoying -_-
try letting the battery die, let it stay dead for a day or two then plug it up to your pc.
i did this (actually i had it dead for a few months till i got tired of using a cd player & tryed to use it from the main songs playlist) & my ipod nano's backlight worked again, i'll try to post this evrywhere so more people can try this.

Dude yo have no warranty. get a kit. take 6 screws off put the new lcd 6 screws back 3 plugs in and done like 10 minutes. Your'e SOL already no warranty no money just spend $20 ebay!!

@sweetdadddy24 Yeah i did the same thing for mine and it worked for a little while and then went off again...i have reset it multiple times and now its just completely shot.
I have the same issues as you. Cracked digitizer and no backlight.
If i am not mistaken you don'n need to replace your lcd screen. ( it should be intact unless you have a dark liquid under the glass.) when you dropped it you did two things. you messed up the ccfl or cfl bulb ( not sure what it is really called)
You do need a new digitzer ( the piece of glass that rides on top of the lcd.
The lack of videos on how to backlight issue is amazing. I haven't found one to help me yet.

check info about 6r8 coil in iphone.
I'm having the same issue, and my ipod 1st gen is already disassembled.

On the home screen go to SETTINGS. Then press General. Then press RESTORE ALL SETTINGS. Try that it worked for mine just now.
