My guess is that the ring was not supposed to come apart. Blackwell usually grabs the ropes when tossed into a corner to help control the, ahem, rebound. If that's right, the ref and the wrestlers did an excellent job ad-libbing. In the match I described above between Andre and Bockwinkel, the entire match took a very odd tone, as if something were wrong and everyone was trying to figure out what to do. My guess was that Andre broke a rib or two...but nothing like that is evident here.
The ring falling apart is an interesting twist that reminds me of a match between Nick Bockwinkel and Andre the Giant in the early 80's, I believe. Bockwinkel threw Andre into a turbuckle and the ring corner collapsed, much like this one. Andre seemed to be injured by the event, and Bockwinkel proceeded to dominate much of the rest of the match. It ended in a very unusual one hour time limit draw. Apparently, the AWA ring construction needed upgrading.
Thanks for posting. Was the ring falling apart suppose to happen, you think? It seems like Blackwell intentionally holds on to the turnbuckle at 5:03.
