  • very nice, loved it. just one thing, EJ uses less gain

  • @rodrigoawilasco and less treble too.

  • @nato101010 yeah

  • I learned something within 3 minutes! Excellent video mate, many thanks.

  • Line 666

  • yeah babyyyyyyyyy

  • is that a dimarzio?

  • I also like to break things up in odd numbers...

  • Great lesson!

  • Slightly different than drums

  • @RainbowLogic hahaha

  • Well done thank you

  • oie sako wea esplica bn la wea soy terrible atarantao jajajaja

  • i broke my finger playing this ) :p

  • This lesson was really insightful. One of the best lessons on Youtube.

  • You really are an excellent teacher.

  • sounds like mahavisnu john. I likey!!!

  • You are god

  • Thanks for the lesson!

  • great lesson and you have his tone down pat!

  • An outstanding example of Johnson's right hand.

  • wow... I didnt know that it was so simple hahaha... oh man this is gonna be fun to play.

  • Why are people disliking these videos? There awesome and teaching me loadsss :p

  • Amazing lesson! Really good, I learned a lot!

    Thanx!

  • I find strict alternate picking to be a bit counter intuitive in terms of overall speed and expression. I mean there are some lick or playing styles (Paul Gilbert) who's sound is all about the really strict up down picking pattern. But for the most part I like economy picking better.

  • Thanks for this

  • This makes absolutely no difference but..... your fingers are kinda thin. Just saying :P

  • Holy shit!!!!! I love that sound.... I dig the cliffs of dover riff too. Nice playing man.

You have a new subscriber. 5 stars. Very instructive.

  • we have the same guitar!! :D :D :D

  • Incredible lesson!! I have no complaints. Nice tone and guitar. The Fender tone switch, low to high is great. It's fun to play with. For what ever amp you have, for clean playing, that tone switch in different positions, can get awesome sounds with leads. I like your tone and style of playing especially 3/4 of the way through the video when you play down the fret board. Thanks for the upload.

  • What are you using for your rig here? How are you getting that EJ sound? Amp, effects, stomp boxes, processors?

  • @rubenzall Hey, it is just a Line 6 POD X3 Live with a EJ patch. Pretty simple eh.. ;)

  • hang on dude!!! y dont tell people abuot the sound ur using

  • what key is the 3rd lick in? Am/C? cuz the ending group of 6 is the Am pentatonic but its also like in the G/Em pentatonic.

  • As always great job..I love your work but man..get a damn tube amp or set it up good. Your tone hurts my ears...stick a tube screamer in front of that thing please!

EJ is a motherf'er you point it out very well and clearly.."ODD groupings with his sequences". What a bastard he is..but what a monster player. You nail it pretty well.

Keep up the good work man!

  • What is the meaning of patatonic ?

  • @oOoKhaledoOo Pentatonic, and its a scale with five notes, hence PENTatonic

  • What shapes are you using in the 3rd lick?

  • You're a great teacher:) Thanks for posting this. I've learned a lot. The beauty of guitar is that we're all from different parts of the earth but we all wanna get better and that is what separates the people who wanna be famous from the real musicians. I'm just sitting here in my guitar teaching room at 2am watching foxes walk by the window here in Northern Canada and playing EJ. Life is good. Cheers man:)

    Roxx

  • @RoxxHunter Hey thanks for the kind comment. Such a small world we have here. Great to hear from you!! Carl..

  • Awesome lesson, thanks! Do you also have a vid to teach the 'outro' of Cliffs?

  • beast..ur pretty good

  • I spent a good six months of my life trying to alternate pick the opening of Cliffs of Dover and it just wasn't happening. You have put me on the right path. Thank you. You are the man.

  • This is a great video! Thank you so much for making this, it's amazing the way you've dissected his style and are able to teach it so clearly to others!

I do have one question though: how can I get these licks up to speed? I've been practicing them for a while (over and over and over for hours on end) and I still can't get them to where you have. Maybe you could give us some tips on that? Maybe make a lesson on how to speed these up?

  • Very good lesson!

    Thanks!

  • can you break down some joe bonamassa pentatonic licks? those fast alternate picking ones are killing me im more of a chicken picker, and he does some wild shit, so please?

  • Not bad, good textbook information laid out nicely ..!

  • eric johnson uses hs-2 pickups which are a stacked humbucker. they sound great, but the pickups you are using in this video sound great too. what pickups are you using?

  • great but you re killing the spirit of the strat with all these humbuckers.

  • @fendermaxime Thanks!! The pickups were temporary. I now have the original EJ pickups back in the strat. :)

  • @fendermaxime

    LOLMOJOHOUNDLOL

  • @fendermaxime these are not humbuckers.

  • @fendermaxime aren't they single coils???

  • @oT0MJHo Nah, see those rails on them? essentially they're humbuckers in SC format, to cancel out noise and getting that nice warm tone

  • @Mooselawl ahh ok =]

  • I have long had a hunch that he did not do strictly alternate picking. Now I have some more work to do!

  • @ERJ94 Yeah, the direct link to the page on my website with this lessons's PDF is in the video description. :)

  • Great lesson but takes to long to get to an example, play first break it down afterwards.

  • Great lesson. Many players fail to grasp the many possibilities of pentatonics. Your breakdown was excellent. Thx.

  • Ive not seen better than this you play johnsons style well , and he is not easy to copy no matter how good you are , well done

  • @AshStrat1 Thanks a lot for the kind comment!!

  • @GuitarLessons365 i 2nd that great lesson, your obviously a very knowledgable player :) and i am i terrible speller :)

  • @CommBreakDown

They look like seymour duncan hot rails, which are humbuckers just fitted into a single coil slot.

  • @robomonkey32997 what?

  • @robomonkey32997 they look like dimarzio's copies of them. Hot Rails are amazing....

  • a bit less gain would be nice

  • fast forward to 1:52

  • yeah He starts on E but ends on an A in the final sequence. Does this end in the key of A?

  • fantastic man thanks for the licks

  • It seems like you switch from E on that last run. Is this right?

  • Brilliant lessons :)

  • wow dude sweet lesson! sounds like the riff from cliffs of dover...

  • name of those humbuckers

  • @belgref Dimarzio Fast Track 2, Pro Track and Chopper. :)

  • This rocks, not too far from a shawn lane style at the first, !!! I had a great time learning! Thanks!

  • This is the BEST example of how to play the Eric Johnson style (and thus Joe Bonamassa) pentatonics! Thank you!!!!

  • @k0sta5 No THANK YOU for watching and the kind comment!! Cheers!! Carl..

  • @k0sta5 u r totally right....Bonamassa has taken influences from a lot of guitar players, but Eric Johnson is a principal for him.

  • cool lick, i think it would sound more EJ if on the forward pickup

  • thanks for the lesson

  • Wicked lesson!

Great player and excellent teacher...very good

    Thanks very much :)

  • @IamtheActionman Thanks a lot!! Carl..

  • Wicked lesson!

    Thanks very much :)

  • at 3:34 when using the group of 5's, are you picking singles notes really fast, or are you picking 2 times for each note?.....i think that made since

    Great lesson!

  • @Mhossey1 Hey there, for each group of 5 I am picking down, up, down, up, down.. The last downstroke is the sweep that leads to the first downstroke. So the whole lick twice is down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down.. The two downstrokes in a row are the sweep or economy picking. Hope that makes since, if you download the TAB for the lesson on my site it will be easier to follow. :)

  • +1. Thank you so much. Awesome lesson.

  • Thanks, this is a good teacher

  • Thanks, this is a good teach

  • was #3 lick in the key of A or E.?

  • Great work man , how long are you playing ?? you helped me a lot thanx :D

  • What kind of Pickups there are in the guitar?

  • what kind of guitar are you using? Looks nice!

  • @TheSoultrain515 An Eric Johnson signature model...of course :) Thanks for watching!!

  • @GuitarLessons365 what are those ppickups then?

  • @GuitarLessons365 you changed the pickups in the original EJ...?

  • was the 3rd lick supposed to change from Em to Am?

  • The problem with we guitarists is that we are too guitar-centric in our listening habits. We're not eclectic enough. If we want to gain the spirit of someone like Eric Johnson, we have to listen to what he listens to, and that includes not only Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Keith Richards, but also he listens to Chet Atkins and the classical violin. If we do this, we can take the ball and run with it, and come up with our own trip.

    Cheers.

  • this is great! i have been trying to figure some of his style out to throw in mine.

  • any eq?

  • I never learn't about pentatonics scales the instructional dvd i bought sucked and i got frustrated and smashed it have you got a begginer style lesson for pentatonics??

  • @locog42 Hey, I do have some basic pentatonic lessons on my main site. Just find the link in the sidebar of my channel, then go to the lessons archive page once your there. Your will find links for all of the beginner and intermediate lessons on that page. There are a few lessons teaching the pentatonic scale. Thanks!! Carl..

  • Makes me want to buy a guitar and learn how to play

  • @WakeUpDummies do it(;

  • @onixtheone That;s what Nike says I should do ;)

  • Except he doesn't play through aweful solid state amps and/or amp simulators.

  • @TheElectromagnet Very true, and in a perfect world neither would I. :)

  • @GuitarLessons365 True. Good lesson nonetheless.

  • @GuitarLessons365 Isnt it interesting how someone could miss all the great aspects of this lesson and decide to show all of us, what a tone snob really is! Great Lesson, no matter what you play through when you can play, well you can play. This was very helpful keep up the great work dude!

  • @TheElectromagnet

actually guitar rig 4 can sound very very close to eric johnson

  • someone likes there rail pups :)

  • Awesome!! This is the EXACT lesson I'm looking for! You're a really great player, you have his style down really well! :)

I'm seeing him on tour in October!

  • how do you get that tone i really like it

  • @Stratmaster17 Hey Stratmaster17!!, I get the tone for all of my vids by using my EJ signature model through a Line 6 POD X3 Live. :)

  • Great lesson mate, thanks a bunch!

  • another great lesson thanx! would love to see some insight into his chords and chord voicing! i think his chord playing defines his sound for me,i just wouldnt know where to begin.

  • you should do a lesson on vai's tremolo technique's

  • @brostomper I wish I could but I am awful at using Floyd Rose trem's. :(

  • Best I have seen or heard in a instructional video, I have two by Eric Himself, yours are better.

    Great job

  • @steveo27545 Thanks a lot!! :)

  • just the video i was looking for. thanks man

  • This guy is good. First time I've seen anyone actually break down EJ's style like that. I expect to learn a lot from these vids.

  • @jimdog1964 Thanks for watching jimdog1964!!

  • man, you kick ass. i dont mean to kiss your ass, but i cant believe how awesome this is.

  • I bought the 1st E.J. instructional vid and i gotta say you teach his technique better than he does!

  • Hey thanks!! But I would definitely trade Eric my teaching ability for his playing ability. LOL Carl :)

  • Excellent lesson. The faster you play it the better it sounds.

  • Yea man u can REALLY help me go 2 that next level. I already subscribe and u will be getting some request from me in the near future. If u hv time man check out my video i posted a while back and tell me what u think. U don't hve to watch the whole thing I solo @ 2:40 or something like that thanks!!!

  • hey carl thanx for sending me a message about your channel....love your lessons especially how you do beginner, intermediate, and advanced....you leave no stone unturned....if that makes since....anywho great lesson.....

  • Really enjoyed this lesson, it's the first I've ever seen for EJ where it feels like it's actually very close to what he does (or maybe it's even the same, it's so fast who can tell). Some Steve Vai lessons in this same mould would be fantastic, maybe focusing on his tapping licks.

  • Thanks a lot for the feedback. I am a big Steve Vai fan and will definitely be doing some lessons on his style as well. Thanks for watching!! Carl..

  • Thx for the lessons, i like the 2 camera business.

  • can u make tabs. its kinda hard to see the fat lick when u run down the neck

  • Hey man, the TABS for this lesson as well as 95% of the lessons I do are available from my website. You can find the link in the sidebar of my channel. When you get to the site just do a search on Eric Johnson and you should see this lesson among others. Click on it and you will be able to download the PDF for FREE. THX!! Carl..

  • bravo, you are a guitarrist very nice!

  • Thanks!! Very much appreciated!! Cheers!! Carl..

  • What pickups are those?

  • I replaced the original EJ single coils with a Dimarzio Fast Track 2, Pro Track and Chopper. I kinda want to go back to the original single coils again and I probably will at my next set-up. Thanks for watching!! Carl..

  • Wow i never knew these e mails actually had any good videos to watch.

  • Oh thx man, I am glad you liked it. Hopefully I have more that you would enjoy as well. Thanks for checking it out!! Carl..
