I was disappointed with this DVD. The way they played Black at this show was kinda weak sauce compared to any other performance I've seen of it. And the set-list wasn't really what I expected. If you ask me both DVDs are only worth EvenFlow, State, Daughter, I Am Mine, Baba and Y. Ledbetter.
Oh Yeahhhhh! Can you see them? On the porch yeah? But they don’t wave. I see them! ‘Round the front way –Yeah! And I know—and I know--- I don’t want to stay. I don’t want to stay I’d like to stay I wanna stay No-No Oh No Oh…Oh…Oh…. Oh…Yeah….
Pearl Jam are amazing, brilliant song bringing tears to my eyes!! Brilliant!! Every now again you get a band that changes music..Led Zep, The Who, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam....may that list continue!
Cmon man... I was just trying to watch a Pearl Jam video and I ended up just about crying... Then I had to look up the lyrics... and it was even sadder. Peace to you man, it's rough.
Such a beautiful use for this song. I am sure your fiend Brett had a great live, doing the fact he cultivated in his life, such a great friend as you URURO.
URUROTRASH: RESPECT!! Same thing here in Holland. My best friend also died 7 years ago. I have a piece of paper on witch we wrote down the Dutch translation, both our tears are on this paper!! This is our song 4 ever!! Miss you Mitch Kalb!!
un freakin' believable....this is why Pearl Jam is the BEST band on the planet and I just can't stop listening to them, even after all these years....and in 4 months time I'll have the honor of seeing them again for the 3rd time!! Thank you Pearl Jam for the music....I LOVE YOU all !!
Ururo...cool comment. I have a very similar deal for a friend of mine from high school. I haven't done it in a LONG time. I need to get back to that. Thanks.
My older bro got me into PJ. Our first show was in 92', at the OG BostonGarden.. we became lifelong diehards, and went on to see PJ together another 14X. These were our happiest times shared together, and this was our moment, when they closed w/ YLBddr. Arms around ech othr, we'd scream the words, w/ teary eyes. His name was Shane Roy, he was my best freind & the greatest person i'v e ever known. He died unexptdly in 2001 at 21yr., i was 20... soon after i heard this version for 1st time...
to hear eddie sing " it said that, i'll never.. see , my brother alive again", seared my soul...at that moment in my life these lyrics were scary similar to what was going on.."i talked to my Dad, he was worse than me, his sons coming home in a box or abag". . ( i was due for a good cry about him, and this song and these memories...) , Shane was 1 in a Mill., and i KNOW that i had the greatest older brother in the world, and wish every1 was lucky enuff to have a bro like that. We also raised ..
Love this song to death always makes me remember the people I've lost who've meant so much to me but I will say the best version I've heard of this was Melbourne Australia 16/11/06
I always love this song! I watch the live versions all the time, but I would love to find just one where Mike plays Van Halen's Dance The Night Away instead of Hendrix's Little Wing at the end.
Wow, I read this and was floored...two days ago. I came back to it today with it resonating in my mind. I bought this DVD years ago and my 2 boys have been raised with Pearl Jam (they are now almost 7 and 5 1/2). I got tears in my eyes when I read what you wrote...as I do now. Music has always meant more to me than others, but your words put things in a whole different light. God rest Brett's soul in peace. He's in a world hereafter - your love for him keeps his spirit alive still today.
Seldom have i read such an touching honest post. My heart broke reading this. I want you to know that from this day onwards i'll recall this sentiment and pray that Brett can hear it from above when we perform it. All the PJ family are with you in thoughts and in spirit. Always. If you ever need ANYTHING all you need to do is contact me. Peace and Love. Ed.
@edpham22 - Mike McCready, Lead Guitar - playing an improvised ending to one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life. Every note is played through him...not by him. His tone is legendary - all the people at Madison Square Garden, including his bandmates, clap on in awe. It makes me want to pick up my Les Paul and turn my Marshall up anytime I hear it...he is the most under-rated guitar player alive.
@poofy917 I think he always has a notebook when he's on concert. He reads few things from time to time some weird some interesting some kind of sad... But he always has one.
Matt at the end...and u can talk about it, so if, no, sorry. Yes I just wish to, it's hard to put in with words. The guitar is a like...like you know, there was a guy, who invented fire, the one, who invented wheel and there was Matt with this solo...
@jakebank - I gave you a thumbs-up, but it's Mike McCready...not Matt. I will forgive you, because you vibe his playing. I think you missed something, though. That is a Higher Power flowing through his fingers when he plays - straight from his soul...so, if you believe in God as I do, you're hearing the sound from Heaven. Cheers!
Check out "It Might Get Loud" and I think you'll be left with a new found respect for the Edge. The man is a player. Comparing bands/singers/guitar players is child's play...if you dig the music, then who gives a fuck beyond that? It's not a pennant chase. Chrissakes Holden!
Ag I used to have this DVD. I lost it a few years ago. What was the song where the stage almost collapsed or something? I can't really remember ha ha.
No offense U2 fans, but they cannot hold a Candle to PJ live!...........Or period for that matter. Eddie Vedder is the greatest singer/songwriter of our generation and Mike McCready maybe the greatest guitar player "Alive".....pun implied.
it really seems like he was trying to pronunceate(excuse the spelling) the words more so you could get the message of the song. being the first time in nyc after 9/11 and the war being underway,
It is abeautiful guitar tone. Mike McCready wrote the music as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix hence the style. As for Eddie's singing, he has always changed the lyrics for this song and it hardly is ever sang the same way. Not to mention he was pretty drunk at this time of the concert. Cheers to you Ed, Mike, Stone, Jeff and Boom!!

I get plus 3 for calling you guys fucking pricks. This place confuses the shit out of me.
Mike motherfucking McCready! One of, if not, the best guitarist to come out of Seattle, Washington. Even though I'm a bigger fan of Alice in Chains than I am of Pearl Jam, I would still say that Mike's better than Jerry. Mike's fucking phenomenal! Listen to that ending solo. Just pure greatness.

But they don’t wave.
I see them! ‘Round the front way! Yeah!
And I know—that I know--- I don’t want to stay.
Wanna see them. I’d like to wish it all away.
And I tried and I called and I could’ve left a message, thought I almost did.
Tried tellin’ Dad he was worse than me.
I realized why his son’s goin’ away in a box or a bag.
staceycranfill 6 months ago 21
Unsealed on a wayside letter
Said----“don’t have to ever feel this way again. Oh no..
On the wayside on a front side letter.
Said—“ that I’ll never see my brother alive again”. Oh no..
And I tried to obliterate all the more.
Had a good time --but the memory keeps-- draggin’ me down.
And I wondered ‘bout the reasons he would of said,
“He’s comin’, he’s coming home in a box or a bag.”Yeah! Can you see them? Out on the porch Yeah!
