  • got 2 stray cats in my yard i gave them food some times but i also try to pet but whenever i come near they ran away. wonder how to pet stray cat any idea?

  • sorry i meant to say a sick animal in the beginning

  • Okay,so you just don't say don't adopt healthy animals and two,it doesn't matter if you buy an animal that is sick or an animal that is healthy, because, you know you can still make it better by, taking it to the vet !

  • This really made me cry. :(

  • i own a cat

  • naww tommy!

  • I am visiting HK next year. I have seen terrible videos of cats in China in nets who are going to be eaten. Does this kind of thing go on in HK????? I could not bear to see it, where are the cat rescue centres so that I can visit and donate. thank you Pen

  • This does not happen in HK, I promise, I've grown up in HK and the people in HK are quite strict with the abuse/mistreatment of animals. There are animal rescue centres, SPCA and HK Alley Cat Watch. There are two centres near my home and I often volunteer to walk the dogs and wash them. I hope people would understand that not all Chinese people eat dog/cat, and many people in HK love their pets. I can give you the addresses if you want them.(: you're a nice person.

  • Hi RR and thanks for the reply, I will look up HK Alley Cat Watch and will look out for the cats when I am in HK. Happy New Year. Pen

  • Happy new year to you too x

  • @robynXreckless I've grown up in HK as well and I've seen so many news on animal abuse, especially cats. Why are there so many rescue centres? because there are a lot of animals that need help. I agree with you that most HK people don't eat dog/cat, and many people love their pets too, but there are also quite a lot of people abusing animals, some are their own pets, some are stray animals.

  • @penolva

    nah, hk people dont

  • dont be sad ur loved by ur rare wonderful hear person called mary =)

  • a stray showed up at our house about a week ago. its really friendly and loves attention. we let it stay in our garage for now, with food, water, and a kennel with blankets to sleep on, until we save up the money for it to be checked out at the vet and get its shots, and fixed [if its not already] then he will be coming inside with us. he looks like tommy, but doesn't have any white on him. i have a short video clip of him.

  • i hope you keep him! you are doing a great thing :)

  • Yes, we kept him.

    His name is Axle now.

He has worms but is getting treated for it.

He is the best cat ever. =]

  • Tommy needs more cat litter than that.

  • Tommy's gorgeous.

  • i went to the spca to try to adopt a cat but ppl at the spca where i am from were anal to me and wouldn't let me adopt one because everyone in my house hold had to come see it. i told them i recently moved into the basement "alone" and they still wouldnt' let me adopt it. and THAT is why no one adopts.

  • The same thing happened when I tried to adopt a kitten with my family. They even want us to bring our other pets. I understand they want the animals to find a good home but you want to make adoptions easier for people not harder.

  • Unfortunately there are too many sick people who adopt animals just to torture them, kill them, or even to eat them. I found a home for a cat that mysteriously "disappeared". I am sure the psycho killed it. And then there are the people who adopt kids and dump them as soon as they are older.

  • Tommy, look you have been so loved and cared for. :)

Thanks Mary, you have such a rare big heart!

  • but i am a crazy cat lover.

  • When i grow up i promice to take on stray cats<3

  • omfg,

    im crying :(

  • at this point we can no longer take in any more cats, but i still care for them. if we see a stray on the road, we stop and try to see if it will come to us, if it does not, i always bring plastic bowls for food and a bottle of water. i leave them food and water for a few days, even if i am traveling, and see if i can get someone to adopt them.

you can do something if you want to, i depends on your heart and your will to do something.

thank you for this video. i hope it helps.

    peace~

  • i live in two places and at both homes we have many animals we adopted who were stray or feral or from a shelter. at my brother's home we have 9 cats- all strays who adopted us, and other smaller animals.

where i am at the moment, my friend and i have about 17 cats and other small animals.

you can make room in your heart.

the story of Tommy is a common one. this poor little animal's story is not that different from so many other cats and dogs worldwide, even in a wealthy country such as the U.S.

  • All I have to say is thank you for being such a great person...

  • a cat came to my home it was only a homeless kitten im not aloud it to live in the house so i got it a kennle and a hot water bottle and it sits a my back door i love her so much

  • It's so sad... Poor Tommina/Tommy! I'm trying to convince my dad to adopt a cat from the SPCA, so at least I'm doing SOME good... I feel so sad... T_T I hope that more people will help the homeless cats of Hong Kong!

  • RIP Tommy:(

  • Please adopt! Do not buy a pet. There are so many animals awaiting adoption every day. Why should we buy when those in rescue centers die?

  • exactly that's what really makes me mad. if I haven't adopted we took them off the streets. and if I could afford to take all the stray ones in my town I would...

  • has "tommy" survived or been fostered inside? This is a touching video and you are both angels for the work you do. My heart goes out to this cat featured in your video.any updates on his recovery or her?

  • God bless you VERY BEAUTIFUL and KIND people : )

  • I feed a stray cat (for 4 months) can't get very close to it. It will hide under a car. I don't have money for a trap right now.

  • Yes, cats like hiding beneath cars especially during winter time to get warm. If it is only one cat, I guess there shouldn't be a problem with it growing into a colony. But I might be wrong, because I am not personally a volunteer. I will ask the opinion of Mary.

  • It sprayed my front door.

  • Hi, I had some wild cats that I needed to trap with a Have A Heart Trap in order to tame them. My local animal shelter let me borrow a Have A Heart Trap. It's worth asking if you're local shelter, could help you out by lending you one.

  • Thankyou so much. The poor thing probably has arthritis, when he walks his hind legs look so stiff.

  • I bet it does. It would be wonderful if you could get him into a Have A Heart Trap and take the first steps towards giving him a much better and longer life. One of the best pets I ever had started out as a feral cat.

  • What is FIV??????

  • It is like HIV for humans.

  • AIDS for cat.

  • well done =]

  • God bless and my thanks to you Mary and Peter, and all you others out there who bring food, comfort and love to the animals that need you.

  • down my home have also kind of alot of stray cats ..their r many cat lovers over here to feed them branded food though. Can i know how to approach n feed them? they run very fast after seeing a stranger n over here a cat lover told me couple of cats have been maybe bitin by owned dogs :( i hope i could help them a little ...we have a spca very near to our place we r also from oi man tin.unfortunatly..we kannot keep animals i love cats very much

  • That is very thoughtful of you. Personally I don't know how to approach the cats and feed them. I am just a "watcher'. The closest thing I have done is leaving the food on the places they are supposed to be when Mary is not free to feed them. What I can do is I will ask Mary to write up something on how to feed stray cats on the blog of Tommy. I will send you a message when she finishes it.

  • Pour cat-i cryed thorugh that :( how could you hurt them, I have 4 stray cats around my home too, I try to catch them but there to afriad, one has no ears, beause they froze off in the winter :( But I try to feed them and give them water and shelter :)

  • If you are interested to learn about the latest updates on Tommy, please visit her website tommythecat dot hk.

  • Me also a feeder for the community cats here in S'pore. I'm writing to send my best regards to you and Tommy as well as the good work you're doing for the streets cats. Bless you! :-)

  • Hell with so many mainlanders coming into HK and SG to work I won't be surprise some of these strays end up in their pot of soup harharhar :)

  • hello~ May I know how is Tommy now? Is she fine?

  • She is recouperating now. Check out my other video updates.

  • hi! im also a stray feeder & caregiver frm singapore. we also have the trap-neuter program in which unfortunately few pple support. most singaporeans r not cat-friendly, including our government. thus the stray situation in SG isnt easy to handle. i have been to HK last yr & i think the situation is much better as i see a few strays being housed into shops where shop-owners take care of a cat or 2. very sweet. u wont get to see anything like that in singapore! sigh!

  • hi, i've seen people rearing stray cats in their shops in SG too :) Got to know a shopkeeper who spent thousands on sick and dying cats and in the end, kept them as pets. Very sweet.

  • I am a stray feeder from Singapore. Glad to know someone who feeds the strays in HK too :) My area has some sad cases of stray cats being abused and went missing too... sighz...

  • I am sorry to hear that ...

  • Hi,

Thank you so much for this, it really captures the plight of Tommy (we have one cat named Timmy who turned out to be a girl too!), the concern of caregivers like Mary and the stark reality of the situation. I and my sister are doing the same in Singapore and the messages and themes in your vid really resonates. People really should open their eyes and minds: adopt, not buy or breed; love and care for your companion animals not abandon them when they are sick or you get tired of them.

  • Thanks for your message from Singapore. I would have thought the situation in Singapore for caretakers would be easier. So is it also very easy to buy pets in Singapore?

  • Very nice video. My husband and I happen to be the proud owners of three rescued feral kitties, our latest orphan having been left on our doorstep by a neighbour. There was an active colony living behind the apt we moved to last December..one Sunday morning I found a four week old kitten out in the middle of the pkg lot and took her home. Two months later, her mother after having cried her heart out on our porch for three days, strolled thru our door and never left.

  • Where did it happen? Hong Kong? You and your husband are very kind and compassionate.

  • So glad you made this, Roderick. My cat, living with me for 10 years now, was a stray cat. I adopted her when she was a kitten though she has a broken tail ( which I believed she was abused). I hope people can think twice before they walk into a pet shop.

  • Thank you Joyce. You are one of many stories that keep coming to me in the last couple of days about their adopted pets. You and the others are my heroes! I am so proud of you guys. Unfortunately I am very allergic to cats, otherwise I would have adopted Tommy right away. She is really a loverly cat. I've been wondering who you are... until I read your message forwarded by Rina. Thank you for the encouragement.

  • what a great org. to be a part of. Great work!

  • Thanks.

  • v d

  • suggestion: make one in Chinese version. If you need translation help. Drop me a message. I'd love to help.

  • Thank you so much for your generous and kind offer. In fact, that's what had been bothering me. After all, it is a local issue that I'd like to raise awareness of. If you could just use YouTube to email me your email address, I can forward you a copy of the script for you to work on. Take as much time as you need, I can turn around a Chinese version fairly quickly in a couple of hours. Please also leave your name so that I can say thanks to you in the video. Thank you again for the offer.

  • Great work! Really touching. I am forwarding it out.

  • Thanks.

  • Thanks for the explanation. Are you a native Hong Kong person? I'm a visa student from Hong Kong, now studying in Canada.

  • Yes, I am.

  • I'm currently a cat owner as well. What is FIV all about? By the way, I'm a member of hkalleycats, since I'm living overseas now, I cannot help them out for now though.

  • Small world! I am not a cat owner, I only had the opportunity to go with my friend to feed the cats several times. As far as I know, FIV is like HIV to human. It is not uncommon to find it in street cats. But I heard they are no as deadly as HIV to humans though. Their symptoms usually come out when the cats are fairly old, like 8 or 9 years old. One of Mary's 5 cats at home also has FIV but he is very healthy cause he is too young to manifest the symptoms.

  • Poor cat.

  • Indeed, but my friend is taking good care of her now. My friend has found a shelter for her to stay. It's a small place where a couple of caretakers have contributed to rent it for sheltering of stray cats. I also just learnt someone at hkalleycats had watched this video and contacted my friend to sponsor future medical needs of Tommy.
