Union Pacific's second #1988, a General Motors product done in Missouri-Kansas-Texas colors, is a worthy successor to the first, a heavy 2-8-2 steamer (Class MK-1) built by Baldwin in 1912.
It strikes me as weird when, say at 3:45, you see it up in high throttle while only moving itself (and not exactly sling-shotting like I'd expect) and yet it pulls that big long train in later scenes with an almost contradictory ease... It's almost as if it had direct drive or something. I'm not saying it defies the laws of physics...maybe I'm the only one, but it seems strange.
Id love to see Conrail repaint a few of the SD80Mac as heritage units in the traditional blue. I know that I'm dating myself but it would be welcome to see a few of the NS SD70s repainted with Penn Central colors. The possibilty of a few CSX SD80 MACs in Chessie System cat paint would also be welcome.
Why do the SD 70 series locomotives like to inch forward on startup? I've noticed that before I live in Canada an was watching the crew Start up an SD 75I and it inched forward as well. I was just wonder what causes that is all. any input will be appreciated thanks!
This is truly and awesome rail fan video. Just LOOK at that thing accelerate. I couldn't believe how many cars it was hauling by itself....even if they were empty. This is one of the best rail fan videos I've seen.
Miss Katy is on the OLS Special at Des Moines Iowa paired up with WP 1983 and the B unit 963. She is a beauty! UP 1982 and the Olympic units are on a Z train to L.A. Cali. Great video!
Hey when did this go down the coast sub. like that? I was down in SLO on te 7th and 8th. I'm guessing it was long gone by then. And do you know where the empty baretables went. Were they left north of Paso Robles or in SLO or farther south? BTW Great video. 5 and a fav.
You missed Miss Katy by a week. It followed Amtrak #11 down the coast, including through SLO. Only UP knows where the baretables went for sure, but from what I heard, the 91 well cars in the video did not stay anywhere on the Coast Sub.
Really there are baretables and 3 auto cars on a siding north of Paso Robles. They have been there for a very long time. And there are now baretables stationed at SLO on the main track 2. They have been there for about 3-4 weeks or so.
I've always been fascinated by trains, from as a kid to now as a big kid...but I don't understand all the terminology. What is a highball? What are those flat cars for that looked like they are empty?
Before lighted signals, raising a ball on a mast indicated clear to proceed, hence the term "highball". Miss Katy was pulling empty well cars. When loaded, they carry containers, often stacked in two, hence they are called doublestacks.
Awesome, thanks for the info, I never knew what a highball was or had ever heard the term before now, I thought maybe it had something to do with speed.
Great UP1988 video Charles! Glad some of my pre-ICLBR train move info could be of use for the chase Sunday. Looks like waking up early on a sunny Cali winter day paid off.
Love the "beep-beep-beep" start-up poof sequence there at Watsonville.
Damn nice footage. I missed her when she supposedly came down through the canyon. I guess it was late at night, seeing as how she left Portola around 5pm. Not sure when it was that she came through though.
O my freaking gawd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I shot vid of this thing when it lead a HOT UP Z train through the Nevada desert and the vid is here on my youtube account!!!!!! Dang nice to see the KATY again!
