Yeah, good acting, but the writing is just okay. Mom got drunk, mom drowned. Not much in the way of poetic resonance in the text, but she does all she can do with it.

This is one of my all time favorite films. Why didn't Catherine Burns become a huge star?!?!

@denis65 I hear various reasons - she wanted to marry and start a family, etc. But I have a feeling it was because she was not photogenic - and this was the start of the 'looks are everything' period of filmmaking. Sad - she was a commensurate actress.
