I've been playing guitar and blues for many years now, and have been a huge fan of Stevie & Robben, also Coco & so many others too, This Matt Schofield has really nailed it for me. He is an absolute outstanding talent as a guitar player, with Deep feel and emoton I feel, in his playing. As well as having a bit of noticeable technical stuff, Great mix of killer Blues and more, I get from listening to this fella. He may not be a legend yet, but this man brings it, Big time!
so anyway, if you don't like mayer's style that's an entire different thing, but you can't deny the fact that he is a bad ass guitar player and just as innovative and cool as matt. he may be a total douche, but he's one of my favorites. i'm not saying he's better then matt or bonamassa, because in those levels there's no such thing as better. they're all way better then us, that's for sure
all of you who are saying he's way better than mayer and all sorts of "you won't hear any argument from on the mayer issue", are just plain ignorant. theoretically wise and technically they're both pretty much the same from what they show on live shows and records. watch mayer do "lenny" live and you'll see the guy has unbelievable groove, and insane bluesy licks, just like matt schofield. they're both greatly inspired by SRV as you can hear on their sound and feel.
If you like Matt then in addition to his own CDs you should take a look at him in/with the Ian Siegal Band - in particular the CD/DVD set "A bigger plate of meat and potatoes".
He's very good, but those who think he's definitely the best today or the best ever need some education. I've been a blues fan for over 40 years and I've heard and/or seen just about every blues guitarist of any note who came down the pike over the last 60 years and believe me he's not the best ever! That said, he is very good and a welcome addition to my list. Would definitely pay to see him play if he comes to one of the clubs or festivals I frequent.
we saw Schofield at Telluride blues fest last year- he was great. Joe Bonamassa is the the best blues-rock guitarist alive. Derek Trucks is the best slide player along side of Sonny Landreth.
he sure knows how to make his solo not boring...i think i heard like 14 different style and he shredded that shit up. anyone else feel uncomfortable with how fucking good he is though...lol he crazy
Blown away by this guitarist. Incredible touch and exquisite phrasing. The tone's not bad, either. lol. Oh, and let's not forget that voice! Five stars, except that youtube won't let me do that anymore.
@Stratomaster1000 I think Mayer is a lil better. But when you have guys playing at that high of level it kind of becomes personal preference. It's like ice-cream... it's all delicious but different people like certain flavors.
For those new to Matt Schofield who are into Blues generally rather than Blues guitar specifically you sholuld check out Ian Siegal and the Ian Siegal Band - in fact find and buy "A Bigger Plate of Meat and Potatoes" immediately, the DVD is awesome with Matt on lead and Ian on guitar and his truly incredible vocals.
This ain't no ordinary blues player you're hearing here folks, listen up and listen good .. he does stuff you just don't see from the 'main stream' players..
The balls-iest blues player ever. His phrasing is like nobody else's. He's a natural with the right attitude and talent to spare. The feel and touch are awesome.
@BluesThor, no, he was a guitarist, not a god, sizzle chest. ;) I was saying bullshit to Aardvarked88's statement that SRV is the most bluesy guitarist. I didn't discredit SRV's skill in any way, shape, or form.
He truly is a great guitarist... Honestly he's the best modern blues guitarist's i've ever heard. In my humble opinion he's miles better than john mayer and joe bonamassa. His touch and feel have the sound of a much older and experienced guitarist.
You are right. I have seen all 3 guitar players and they are all great but Matt would eat them for breakfast in terms of touch, feel, note choice and overall classiness.
Matt dont need 4 100 watt heads and a huge pedalboard to get his great tone, unlike some!
@Stratomaster1000 You should check out The Terry Jaygo band from liverpool. Recently formed blued trio, i heard they were doing the festival scene this year so keep an eye out..
as for joe bonamassa.... i wouldn't say one is better than the other... just different. check out The last matador of bayonne, from joe bonamassa's newest CD dust bowl, I think you will find it fantastic.
for me, Joe bonamassa connects better, not to say that this is not brilliant... but i suppose for you, this connects better. :) Either way, your taste is impeccable, keep rocking friend.

Great technique, style and phrasing. Is Matt any relation to the great jazz guitarist John Schofield, who used to play with Miles Davis?

@DrMarianus Scofield and Schofield, different names :) Plus Sco is american =)

This guy reminds me of Robben Ford, same mix of jazz inflections, but I like his emotional style and restraint. Excellent.

@joelkeaton Ok. I just know he may use a Providence Stampede OD from time to time.

he plays it clean and all but its the blues that plays everyone. there is nothing special. its not bad. its very clean. but theres no new style in it.
i like philip sayces style more than matts.
he plays very clean too. but he has his own style. its very emotional and extrem!!! powerful.

his music is grating and he yell-sings.
But Matt plays beautifully and sings great.
