The producers do a couple interviews and a few rounds of auditions that you don't get to see on tv. From the interview they get some background and write questions/topics for the judges to ask/discuss. It's not like they didn't know they most of them are filipino, the producers meant to bring it up for whatever reason. They also use the interviews to ask lead questions for the video clips. There has been many teams w/ Filipino members on the show.

The reason TM didn't make it was because the judges or producers felt they may not have stood out. Which considering the outcry was dead wrong. As long as they have the regional system there will always be a number of great westcoast crews that won't make it. The system is flawed, I mean how can you get A.B.D.C. if you don't bring on the best teams and at the end of the day it's really about votes. TM would done well because they are likable, do great choreo, and have a pre established fanbase.
