The English aren't descended from the french, they're from the Normans who lived in the northern area of what is now france. England was united well before France ever was.

Richard the Lionhearts mother was the lady in charge of the region of aguitaine which was a seperate state from France until it was anexed in the 15th century, his father was Henry II from England

That's true Matthias. The Normans were originally Scandianvian invaders who were given title after conquering what is now Normandy.
