yes as a packer 3rd generation montana the wolves are killing elk and cattle..the state is losing its elk population...and ranchers who depend on the elk hunts in winter are in trouble....tell me what animal is going to limit the wolf population considering they breed and live in packs as opposed to other preditors that are singular as hunters? it is not the old west where millions of buffalo roamed
The wolves are killing the elk way too fast, elk herds are disappearing. Go to Yellowstone Park and you will not see the elk that were there 15 years ago.
It's really the only sensible thing to do, have controlled hunts on them. I have nothing against the wolves, but they are a major predator and we need a check and balance situation with them. Hunting would be that method to control them. Plus they would also start to fear humans and not so eager to come down into ranches...maybe. It's hard to de-program mother nature and take that predatory instinct away from such an animal.
No kidding, maybe have a special tag drawn or something. The wolf count in Idaho at the end of '08 was 824 individuals in 88 packs. That's a lot of wolves for an area that small. My old Idaho hunting spot up near Elk City in Unit 15 has had bad hunting since the re-introduction and that was a major breeding ground for 4 different herds! See what happens when people make laws for places when they live so far away and know not exactly what happens?
Wow really? dang that is a lot of wolves. im just wondering why the fish and game preserves are not doing anything, there needs to be a wolf hunt soon before it gets way out of control like wolves coming in to our towns looking for food.
Yeah man, my thoughts exactly. I'm no wolf expert, but let's say for the sake of conversation that a pack of wolves kills one animal every 3 days. That's 122 animals per year. 88 packs in Idaho, that's 10,736 elk, deer, moose, etc. In Washington our biggest herd of elk is the Yakima herd at 3,000. With those numbers it's no wonder that the elk population of Idaho has been decimated.
yep exactly, and i have noticed huge changes in elk in my area as well, but I don't think its just the wolves i think its people too. But I don't think that people would have a bigger effect on the elk as the wolves do cause we don't hunt them everyday of the year, i'm not sure, so im hoping fish and game will do something soon and fix the wolf population.
What a great slide show! As far as the wolf situation. I grew up in Idaho and remember the wolf re-introduction and many of us knew they were going to bred like rabbits, and it has happened. I live in Washington now, but went back to Southeast Idaho for elk this bow season and was very surprised to see wolf warning signs posted on my favorite hunting spot and guess what...I seen no elk that trip, didn't even hear a bugle. We need controlled hunts on wolves to manage the overpopulated pack.
I see there are more than one comments on wolves and how they are wiping out the Elk. And its sad, but true, and i do agree with you, i think there should be hunts on the wolves. Wolves breed successfully, like you said like rabbits!! and i have noticed huge changes of deer and elk in my area here in Garden Valley and other areas as well.
Like one time i was out hiking like i usually do to spot elk on this mountain right behind my friends cabin (and i always see elk here)and i was only about a few miles away when i heard a huge group of wolves right across the ridge from where i was. i decided to climb to the top of mountain and i did not see a single elk :( and that was surprising to me. the only elk i did see was a small group down very low on the highway. so i agree with you and the others, i think there should be a wolf hunt.
Hey. UFO's were once spotted over mexico city, and in the 1940's one crashed in mew mexico.
Ahhhhhhhh.....
That was some fantastic wildlife footage.
I am sure that Wolves are over running some areas. Get some video of it and show it. I am sure you would get a huge amount of replies if you shot a video of a wolve killing cattle, like a cow or sheep, while the farmer is running out the door of his farm with his rifle, to same his stock. This is elk.
@RiverBirch1967 Wapiti is in the Shawnee language. from Wapan (white) W'tiuk (rear end). Languages such as Cree, Ojibway, Miami amd Lenni Lenape are very similar to Shawnee and have cognates of Wapiti for Elk. :)

The wolves are wiping out the elk in Idaho. We need to save the elk. Open a season on the wolf.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Wolves in Idaho have killed 325 cattle, sheep and dogs so far in 2008, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says.
The reported kills through Nov. 24 - 212 sheep, 100 cattle and 13 dogs - are 47 more than in all of 2007.
Steve Nadeau, the department's large carnivore coordinator, said wolves in the last two years have tended to move onto private land.
"You can't just keep stuffing wolves on top of each other," he told The Times-News.

Where does Wapiti come from? I saw it on signs but no one told me where the name comes from.
RiverBirch1967 3 years ago
Wapita means white tail here in Pennsylvania, the Indians called the Elk this name

The Native American Indians called the elk Wapiti, which means white deer because of its white rump.
