  • Wow!, bro! You really did this bass up. You've morphed it into a real FENDER BASS!!

  • lmao, your getting in trouble just by using your index finger. not fast enough bro xD

  • dont get why everyone thinks the inlays are painted on when they are not :S

  • Hi !! I really like your video !!! I bought that bass and I plan on modding it a bit, just like you. I just love your tone man ! Could you tell me which Lindy Fralin pickups you are using ? As well as the pre-amp ? I also want to know where you got the Fender logo ! Thanks a lot !! :D

  • @HitPointHD Thanks, man......They are the Lindy Fralin stacked coil Jazz pickups. I have since replaced the Fralins with a set of Rockfield Jazz pickups with the wide 3/8 pole pieces(believed to be prototypes because you can't even buy them as a set and I've looked everywhere online. Rockfield bass pickups are commonly found on Traben basses and guitars). The preamp is an Audere. If you read some of my earlier posts , it explains everything in detail. Thanks.

  • Really nice man :P

  • the newer Squiers are really good basses for the money. I have a Squier jazz bass myself and I like it better than my Warwick.

  • @enahcs Yeah.I've learned that you don't have to spend big bucks to get a good sounding bass.

  • one finger style???

    hm...

  • Dude, nice stuff.

  • awesome

  • The 'fill' at 1:08 made me totally wince. Apart from that nice ish cover..

  • Nice. I like it.

  • Great........ another song Im not good e nuff to play, thanks

  • @spritquest35m Friend, if it makes you feel any better, I only took up the bass 4 years ago. The song is very easy to play, I just put my own spin on it. That's all. It's a fun tune. I feel the same way you do because a 14-yro. girl in the U.K. can play Stevie Wonder's 'Sir Duke' and I'm still struggling with that one.

  • You make me wanna upload a cover of this song, those octaves fit soooo well with the song :)

  • Non mi piace per niente, così distruggi l'anima dei Police forti anche durante i loro silenzi!!!

  • this is a tough one... you can only hate or love this one.

i think you did a really nice cover. and your tone rocks!!!

  • Well.......Considering a new Fender '75 jazz bass re-issue cost about $1700 roughly now, I only spent $280 for this Squier. The only difference is that the re-issue has the laquered neck and the Squier doesn't. Also, the Squier pickups are Seymour Duncan designs and the re-issue are just stock pickups. They are both made out of maple. For the budget of the re-issue you can buy 6 of these Squiers or make some quality upgrades if you just bought one.....and still have money left over.

  • @Mowac

I have given myself a project to turn a VM Squire jazz into a 75ri Jazz, looking for some top pick ups but they are so pricey either DiMarzio Ultra Jazz Bass Pickup Set or Nordstrand NJ4SV's

  • sounds better than the recording

  • any chance you would have tabs for this

  • Thanks for posting. I' m thinking of putting an Audere preamp too to my 70s VM Squire.

  • i like this better than the original

  • great playing great bass!!

  • yeear i have the same bass!

  • You hold that very high.

When I play, my bass is basically at my waist. Of course, I'm probably a lot shorter than you, so maybe it's just arm position.

  • good shit dude

  • I like the original better! but this is original

  • Nice job!

  • Great groove! Good job!

  • i love how you play this song... i suppouse you've been playing for a long time?

i've played the bass for 3 years, this was the very first song that i play back then... obviosly wihtout the slapin... lol

and that's a good bass guitar you have... i have an ibanez soundgear. =D

  • Gee............that sure hurts coming from the likes of you.........

"Lowfreq65"?.....with a screen name like that, you just answered my next question regarding your dwindling common sense and lack of intellect. That explains everything I need to know about you. Cheers!

  • THE JAMERSON HOOK!!!!!!

    good stuff

  • Great eye my man....great eye. Hardly anybody caught that.

  • @josh802 awesome, isn't it?

  • Question for you. In the video, it looks as thought you only use your index finger to play with. If so, why don't you try incorporating your ring finger also. It'll help you with your speed, string crossing, and dexterity. You'll be able to play alot smoother.

  • i love my VM jazz bass!

  • im playing this song with the same bass :)

  • Why did you change the squier logo? You really hear it isn't a fender, no matter waht you change the bad quality of the wood is very obvious. Just buy a MiM J and replace the PU, your bass will sound lot better

  • Point taken...however, the vintage mods. sound better than the MiM and play better. Not to mention they cost twice as much. And the vintage mods are made from maple, not that cheap agathis of basswood like the affinity squiers are made from. It sounds better than the MIM and CIJ models. It probably sounds differenet here because I added too much compression.

  • I meant the MIM basses cost twice as much as the vintage mods.

  • @Mowac nice playing dude. Your bass sounds fantastic. I have heard that the squier vintage modified jazz bass sounds better than some of the american made fenders.

Apparently the black block inlay's on the neck of the squier is painted on. Do you have any issue with the black paint coming off??? How do you think the painted blocks will fare a few years down the track???

I'm debating on getting a vintage modified or the 60's classic vibe.

  • The Vintage mods are the best bang for the buck regarding a Fender. If you want to spend nearly 8 to 10 times as much for a US model that sounds no different and plays no better than the vintage Squier Mods, you can do that but you'd be throwing away your money. I had the neck on this Fender sprayed with laquer and so the painted inlays won't come off.

  • @delitemyheart

they aren't painted on, it's an urban myth!

  • hi,how you replaced a logo to fender?

  • I just got the same bass here, although without the upgrades, and realized it was a lil heavy and hard on the shoulder...any suggestions for straps that could possibly help?

  • Get a wide leather strap....Levy makes some good ones for bass guitar that have some decent padding.

  • thank you :D

  • Yo Mowac, so far, I got the Badass2, and the JZ3. Now I need is pickups. I don't mean to copy but I keep hearing that Lindy Fralin Jazz pickups are really good. Any opinions?

  • Sounds good. The Fralins are good, however, I have since then switched out the Fralins to Rockfield. They are jazz single coil pickups with the wide pole pices like that of half a Music Man pickup. They aren't on the market and I believe they are prototypes. I am considering installing the Duncan Design pickups that originally cam on the vintage Squier model on another jazz bass I have.

  • As far as the badass bridge your have, I've learned that you don't have to pay around $100 bucks for a badass. You're just paying for the name like a pair of 'Nike' shoes. Goto Ebay and visit a seller named 'bassplayer437' and he has comparative quality bass bridges for a Fender jazz with the high-mass bass for .........just $14. Better than a badass in my opinion. As for the Audere, you can't go wrong. Peace.

  • Are you serious. Haha, I wish I would have known that a while back. What pickups are great for slapping, rock, funk, and jazz? In one word, I guess clear and bright, not really warm. If there is a do-everything pickup set that can get good lows as well as crystal clear, let me know as well. Something that can stand out. Also i'm loving the JZ3, it was my first experience with wiring, myself.

  • Fralin makes great pickups, however, I came to the conclusion that the stacked single coils don't have that vintage tone I was looking for. And that was why I replaced them with the Rockfields. Rockfields are known for their guitar pickups mainly. I will probably seel my Fralins and get the vintage fralins for about half of the price.

  • My god thats a delicious sound!

I wanna get one of these for my 5-string Squier Jazz and the Module version for my Ibanez BTB 6-string.

  • Waauw, what a case of bassplaying, fortunately you switched the camera off before the end of the song... And I don't hear Sting in this.

  • Look/sounds great

    I love modding basses too

    ever consider black pickguard screws?

they make a stealthy "glued on" look for black guards

  • That's an awesome looking bass my friend! The Police rule.

  • mowac what do u mean by "a seperate 9vol drop-in batterie box on the back"?? i have one of these bass and i just ordered an audere preamp, is there any problem as to the preamp's battery. Tell me it does fit in the cavity and that u just wanted an extra batterie to have an 18volt supply!

  • What that means is that I had the body routed for a drop-in 9-volt battery box on the rear next to the control cavity so that you don 't have to keep taking the control plate off of the front whenever you need to change the battery. Most active basses will have a drop-in battery box on the back.

  • i have another bass like this, i just wanted to make sure it's not necessary cause i don't want to have to install any box at the back. So if u installed that it's just to make the battery change easier not because the batterie does'nt fit in the control cavity right?

  • I did that because It's a pain in the ass to have to change the battery from the control plate by removing the screws each time you have to replace the battery. The audere is a 9-volt system and I used a single 9-volt drop-in box. If your battery dies in the middle of a gig, you won't have time to remove the control plate. The drop-in is easier, simpler, and faster. And you don't risk disturbing the wiring and risking a short every time you have to take off the control plate.

  • Ok thank you very much for yr help! keep groovin'

  • nice cover... one of the best bass cover on youtube

  • Thanks sir

  • Pretty good work. I do believe that you overplayed a lot, but hey, you're a musician not a copy monkey (:

  • Correct on the overplay.....I like trying some songs to see how they would sound beefed up. And then there are some songs that need to be left alone.......this was one of them.

  • wow impressive, what amp did u use for the video? this little squier sound really good I'll buy it soon ;-)

  • I ran through an old Yamaha FX-500 straight into a Trace Elliot AH-300 bass head. I love the Yamaha unit because it has 5 multi-effects that can be used at once. It has the best compression I've ever heard. The overdrive on it is a joke but everything else on it is nothing but high-caliber. This bass has been modified with high-end electronics so nothing sounds stock on it.

  • Does Sting play a fretless on the original song? I seem to recall he used to play an Ibanez Fretless?

To be honest I think your version sounds better!

  • It doesn't sound like Sting played the song on a fretless. I've never seen him with an Ibanez, just Fender Precision basses and the Spector. I think he may have played Yamaha too.

  • I did some research and can confirm that Sting used a fretless on the first two Police albums. In fact you can see him using an Ibanez Fretless exclusively on the Regatta De Blanc Tour clips on You tube.

    A fretless on reggae, interesting!

    Cheers

  • very nice job. i'm thinking of buying a new bass, which do you prefer more, the vintage modified jazz, or the squire affinity jazz? (ignoring the $200 price difference)

  • You'll get your money's worth with the vintage modified models over the affinity models. The affinity models can be just as good if you can competently make adjustments to your bass playing style. The real difference in the body. The vintage modified seen above has a maple body and neck (better tone). The Affinity model are built with 'basswood' or agathis. Agathis is a tree that grows in China, which is where the Affinities are made. It's like having a bass body made out of pressboard.

  • @Mowac actually, my affinity p bass is made of alder.

  • Check out the "Take It Away" Paul McCartney bass playalong in my videos that I made. I'm using an Affinity(Made in China) bass. It's a decent practice bass however I replaced the very cheap factory tuners with better quality ones. If you got a good sounding bass rig, you can make this bass sound very decent.

  • Very nice interpretation ! Sounds good...

    keep going....

  • Nailed it son.

  • im stuck between the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, and the Squier Vintage Modified Precision. can you clear up anything between the two before i place my order. i would just play them for myself but im not able to drive far just to test play. guess im asking whats the difference in the p-bass and the j-bass

  • A jazz bass has 2 single coil pickups that has a volume, pan(some have 2 separate volumes if not wired for pan between the two pickups), and tone controls. A precision bass typically has just one set of precision pickups that are offset from one another(one for the E & A strings, and the other is for the D & G strings). You can dial in more sounds with the jazz because of the 2 pickups. The precision bass has one 'fixed' sound that is only affected by the voume and tone controls.

  • ahh. thanks alot for your response.

  • I forgot to mention that they do make a P / J bass configuration which consists of a Jazz bridge pickup and a standard precision set. It simply means that you can have the best of both worlds in the same bass. Ibanez uses this configuration on some of their current basses.

  • Its the best SQUIER you have ever played

  • Hello from france,

great work, yeah !!.I'm interested by this bass and I want to know if you think it's a "good" one, and what do you think about the neck (cos i like a very low action).Excuse my bad english.Thanks,bye.

  • Of all the 'economy' line of Fender basses, the vintage modified are the best value for your money. The one in the video above came with a maple body and neck, not the cheap 'basswood' or 'agathis' bodies that the Affinity squiers are made out of. This bass has good sustain and tone. It's definately a good investment.

  • Thanks for you answer,man !!!.

Hope to see you soon with another one vidéo,bye.

  • class

  • great bass, great song

  • Hey Mowac ! (Bad english) Have you got a tab Svp ? I like your cover of "So lonely" By The Police.

    Thanks,

    DSEnno

  • cool job you did to the bass. very cool.. your bass line though, for the police song perhaps a bit to busy.. i didn't feel the groove that much.. nonetheless you can play.

  • zomg do I spy a Trace Elliot in the back? :OO

  • Your vision serves you well..It's an AH300 head at 4 ohms. ......I was also playing through an old Yamaha F500 multi-effects processor (no longer made).

  • booo: you should have left that squier logo ...just to drive expensive fender player crazy !

  • Great tone man ,did you lacquered the all neck and what did you used??there is a lac that they used on the real vintage fenders to make the neck more resonant, but i dont know the name?

  • I didn't do the actual job, I had a friend of mine who is a master guitar luthier perform the work for me. The idea was to take a modified jazz squier and shape it into an authentic looking 75 Fender jazz bass with all the upgrades in place. Could you imagine spending around $1,000 for a stock vintage re-issue bass and then making the upgrades? You'd have nearly 2 grand wrapped up in it by then. That's why I went the route that I did.

  • Hey Mowac,

can you twll mw how you put the fender logo on there?

  • It's a waterslide logo...All vintage Fenders were applied that way....That's the way any reputable instrument manufacturer applies their logos. I got mine off ebay, however, you need to make sure that your getting an authentic one instead of one of those ink jet printer fakes that you can actually see the pixels. I got mine from the EBAY U.K. website.

  • Cool playing and great tone.

    Peace,

    Fred

  • Great job.You have done a hell of a good job with that bass, killer sound!!

  • Many thanks to you my friend.
