Just to let you all know, the guy making all the noise is a friend of ours (I'm Vyzor btw, the guy who starts out on the left side of the video) who did that at all the major events. He's not filming because it was recorded with my camera another friend was holding (The guy who goes "Doo doo do!" During the song).

Unfortunately, freestyle is dead but whatever. We still do it from time to time when we randomly play.

Yeah you have to choreograph(i think i spelled that wrong) your steps. Most of the time it is done on light or Standard mode though.

That was good, but true, the guy needs to stfu. I have a dumb question about DDR freestyle, though. When you freestyle, are you still playing DDR? Like, do you have to choregraph(sp?) around the music, or do you have to find a way to have fail off?

In the ones I competed in, it typically varies between two requirements for freestyling. Either you must get a "C" in grade, or you must simply pass. To pass, you must get a "D". In either case, some effort in passing is required. If there is a tie on dance styles, then the grade (or number of perfects) makes the overall winner.

It's a combination of all three. You have to choreograph your moves to follow the music and steps. You can miss, but the trick is not to miss enough to fail the song. So you can say miss 3 steps in a row, but make that up by hitting say the next 20 steps.

It also depends on the difficulty level too. Most freestyle tourneys lower the level to a 2 (this is only adjustable in the arcade settings, not by song difficulty)
