I had a demo of this game when it first came out. Was loads of fun, so i understand what you mean. I'm thinking it's the ps3. Just befriend someone with a ps2 and go over their house and play, you never know it might just be the game itself.

I had a similar thing happen in a later level, apparently this is somewhat of a common thing with the Emotion Engine's emulation of the game. Not much you can do, other than play it on a PS2, or on your PC using pcsx2.

Hmm. Well, on the positive side, at least you have a backwards compatible PS3. Aren't those worth more than 300 which new PS3's cost now? Not sure.

@AndrewBravener And another plus is that load times should be shorter compared to playing on a PS2. While we're on the topic of PS2 games, I suggest Odin Sphere and Ape escape 3. Two totally different games, but I think you'll like em. OS has great 2D graphics and a good story and Ape Escape 3 is just pure banannas.
