thank god serena won this match, sharapova was so loud at 5-4, it was ridiculous. notice at 14:27 how sharapova hits a winner when she is silent.

Serena and Maria played a fabulous match in that semi-final. The match reminded me of what both are able to bring to the court. There was something so exciting in women's tennis during that period.

I look forward to Serena's full recovery from her injury and from her US Open 2011 disappointment. I am hoping Maria can regain her form. Lately, Maria has been beating herself. But, she still hangs in there, and I believe she still has the goods.

This was such an awesome match, overshadowed by awful commentating. lol. I wish now, in 2011, Sharapova still had this form to give some awesome tennis in a match with Serena. I LOVE those icy stares Serena gives when she's going to win and how she walks away after her serves, KNOWING she's won the point.

serena is amazing..i'm sorry, mary carillo is one of the most biast commentators i've ever seen..the fact that at the end of the match she said sharapova was a better player, even though serena owned 6 grand slams at the time to maria's one and when the debacle at the 09 open happened, she jumped all over serena even though back in 2004 the linespeople had cheated her over 5 different calls that wouldve gotten her the match which probably explained her outburst..serena is the ultimate champion

However with all that was going on at that time, people were putting Maria over Serena as the better player, Serena had to win this to gain her reputation back. The crazy thing I believe Sharpova thought she could really beat Serena playing. Everyone know that Wimbledon was a Serena recovering from an abdominal tear and the YEC SW winning 4-1 in the second set before she tore her abdominal again.

Probably one of the worst commentaries ever tennis history! I've seen the whole match, and these people were really putting down Serena, it made me sick! They were so disrespectful toward Serena and her game. Mary Carillo is probably one of the most hypocritical people out there, and why they continue to let her commentate is beyond me.

Mary Carillo and Dick Enberg are both idiots. They always seem to have favorites when commentating which they shoudn't let the viewers know about. Serena lucky? I don't think so. She just found her range kinda late in this match and once she found it, Sharapova was a gonner.

@tennisdudeintx I like when Mary commentates. It adds to the drama of the game, especially when one of the sisters win. SHe is so quite. I hope they would allow her to speak. It forces her to give credit when it's due. If she weren't so bias I think she's the best commentator out there, when it comes to breaking down a player's game and giving good advise.I don't want to but have to give her credit for that.

Yes, Remember how she kept asking the other commentators while laughing "Are the William Sisters declining?" SW had I belive 7 Slams under her belt at the time and VW 3 or 4. I remember P. Shriver saying"YES THEY HAVE." Mary laughed really loud. I really think she needs some type of psyhological evaluation if she's ever selected to commentate any W Ss matches in the future. No Mary, after 6 additional slams for SW and 3 for VW it's safe to say "They did not decline." No one has played BETTER!!!

THIS IS WHERE WOMEN'S TENNIS WAS AT IT'S PEAK!!! This match would have been as exciting as nadal - federer...the quality of womens game in 2004-2006 was tremendous...then with all the injuries and retirements it went down. BUT 2011 seems to be getting better with maria playing well and serena finally returning!:)

I love to see any match Serena beats Maria, and I think the way Serena won this one was the beginning of the end of their rivalry really. Wonderful stuff. Maria HAS NEVER BEEN and WILL NEVER BE the player Serena is, end of, Serena is superior to Maria in every way and Maria knows this. Serena will die on that court before she will allow Maria to beat her. As for those idiots commentating, I could have done better!

In fact, Sharapova would haven't have won her next 2 Grand Slams if she met Serena or Venus at them.....She just lost the mental edge she had against Serena there and then, and she has never beaten Venus or Serena at Grand Slam level.

@TWDtv hum, hello, Wimbledon 2004? That was a slam final that Sharapova won against Serena. And she beat her at the YEC the same year which is the most important tournament after the slams. But I agree that since, she has failed to beat serena.

@juju1305 Hello, remember, Serena was beating Shapova something like 4-1 at the YEC. She pulled a muscle and could not play at her best. Also, When Maria beat Serena at Wim(04), Serena was coming back from and injury and family tragedy but still made it to the finals of Wimbledon. Sharapova got lucky that day and at the YEC. She has never been able to beat either WSis when they are healthy. I like Maria but Serena has always been able to beat her. Let's not kid ourselves. Pretty but cant beat SW

I love how when Serena was down she just took her time with the points and not bashing the ball. that's what sharapova continued to do throughout the entire match. Serena showed why she is better not because she is stronger or mentally stronger because she knows how to play a point. she takes her time with the ball then attacks when its time.

That's one thing that Sharapova has NEVER had really. She is a great fighter, but she doesn't know how to stay calm enough when someone seriously asks questions of her. This was the first of what turned out to be many signs of that. Being a great fighter doesn't automatically equal being mentally tough, but being calm certainly does equal to that.

Mary Carillo always antgonizes Serena and Venus. How is Serena's forehand technique ragged? I like Pam Shriver for the most part and I love Mary Joe Fernandez. Mary Joe seems to be the least biased towards anyone and I really enjoy her commentary. Dick Enberg is ok. He really did seem to be for Maria in this match. I believe he just got caught up in the Maria hype. Cliff Drysdale and Pam Shriver usually go at it.

@aoutyable She's still very bad, but here, her desperation to win this match and start her supposed "dominance" of the women's game was all on the lin here, even at 17......She knew she would beat Davenport in the final, since she owned Lindsay at the time (before the infamous 0 and 0 Indian Wells match). And she thought that she was mentally stronger and a better player than Serena......That was put to rest much more later in the year.

Sometimes when I'm watching Serena play in the finals of a Grand Slam against someone other than Venus, I have noticed that Mary Carillo is very quiet when Serena is winning. A great example of this is the AO '07, when most people chose Sharapova to win.. boy, were they DUMB!
