JBass69, or anyone else. I am just starting to learn slap bass. I have played guitar on and off for over 30 years. But I just picked the bass up about 3 months ago. Ok, my question is, on the slap hand, my right hand, should all 4 fingers curl under while slapping ? because my natural feel is to just curl the pop (pointer) finger, or will that hamper my speed in the long run ?
just one question, do many players use the thumb pick often? I use a pick like that for fingerstyle guitar but haven't seen it used for slap bass technique.
hmmm dont seem to be getting much amplitude out of my higher strings no matter how hard i slap. What am i doing wrong. Its a pretty decent bass so fairly sure its a technique issue.
It is hard to get sound out of the higher strings. You want to get an even sound across the board, so I would tend to turn up the amp and thumb the lower strings lighter. Try that and see if you can even up the sound. I definitely hit the higher string harder than the low ones.
Hi Anthony, Thanks for the tip. I had realised that. I think also having watched you playing closely again you strike almost as a 6 string player would pick a down stroke which means that the initial strike does not limit the string in amplitute to the distance to the fretboard. Played your 1st 2 exercises for hours yesterday and it's really helping. Many thanks.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you see it that way. I'm only tough on the students, because it's a tough business. You guys pay a lot of money to go there and I really want you all to play great. That's why I do all this stuff. I hope you are doing well.
I took a lab with this guy at Berklee and he kicked my ass more than any other teacher at the school. He's a fantastic teacher if you do your homework, otherwise he's kinda scary if you're not trying hard. I'm glad he scared the living s..t out of me on the first day of class because I learned a lot from this guy.
BTW: He's a really cool guy if you do your time in the shed. He'll go the extra mile to make sure you get the picture.
Thank you very much i improved a lot
