on my craftsman it used to have a 24hp brigss els intek that the guy didnt check the oil and it threw both rods so me and my dad put a new engine on it. it now has a 27 horse briggs
that thing looks pretty new to have an opposed twin on it, did you guys put that in or was it made like that? briggs stopped making the opposed twins in the 90s didnt they?
You guys are so cool. Are you like process engineers. I have six theories of R. floating in my head but yea cutting gardens is really what its about at the end of the day.
So many Briggs engines just suck. I've never had to deal with one of these ELS engines thank god but my 1999 tractor has a 13 hp Briggs Intek single and it is complete shit!! You can't even run it on half of low throttle without it running all choppy and far from smooth. The engine even dies out if you put the throttle all the way down for whatever reason so you always have to keep it at full. Even then it doesn't run that smooth. I have push mowers with Briggs engines that run ten times better.
I have one of those new Briggs & stratton motors on my 2006 snapper rear engine riders and it SUCKS. I am having the same air filter problems as you. You should see how dirty my intake pipe is.
Don't mow any step inclines that engine had a problem with circulating the and it will throw a rod and mess up the piston! I know i have rebuilt 6 of those motors that threw a rod and 3 that sucked dirt and ruined the pistons and valves. you can change that filter over to the new style that briggs made, its like an ATV clamp of filter.
Ha, cool I have rebuilt 6 of these too! Yeah, they sure do suck, but in the end it means I get them cheap. I would never be able to have one if they were reliable, lol!
Yes, we did have to modify the harness. The newer motors use a different type of connector. We traced out each wire in the new motor's harness and then soldered the existing wires onto it.
hey that new engine looks like the one thats on my Yard King 20hp that thing is relly reliable briggs engine. hey do u by chance want to get rid of any garden tracters that dont run. ill give u $20.00 for each message me
Nothing really. It could have used a carb rebuild, but really it was fine. We just wanted a more powerfull and newer motor. And I'm sure that old 16 will go on somethig else soon.
I think the idea of the filter shoved in the gap will work, especially since we're not mowing with this one, we won't be creating any dust. What you can do, and some people have done is put on a top from the B&S Intek v-twins which uses the same filter BUT the cover is held on with bolts. All the ELS motors we have already have been replaced under warranty through Sears; these are the dead ones from customers tractors. Mel-Co gets them from Sears and then re-sells them on eBay for parts.
I don't think this is the biggest Briggs makes. I think they have a 32 hp. out now. Kinda rare, I haven't seen one yet, except on the internet.

Did you have to modify the wiring harness? I was thinking about doing a similar swap on a Simplicity 6216.

that idea for the foam filter sounds good. lot of power in that engine. why did you guys decide to do the engine swap so late?
gasman7777 3 years ago
That might have been the weekend we built the shed, so we had to use the daylight while we could.
LynolsOffice 3 years ago
oh, well at least you could sleep in late the next morning!
gasman7777 3 years ago
Youre right- thats the most idiotic idea briggs has came up with- that air filter setup. The furnace filter idea sounds like a good alternative.
Try contacting briggs on that- they have either a retrofit kit or could possible get a free motor.
Its hard to believe these motors could be brot down by something as plain as dirt/dust- must be the chrome plated rings wear out?
I have a couple old 'beater' briggs motors i dont use any air filter on- theyre still workin fine- just goes to show...
