Unbelievable! As a schooled musician, and mediocre jazz guitarist, I was checking out Gibson L5 videos and came across this one! Outstanding tone, phrasing, and feel! I tabbed out for a minute and forgot I wasn't listening to a classic jazz performance. Extreme kudos.
Beautiful, congratulations, you make me want to try jazz stuff again, thank you. Are you playing with flat strings or rounds? Which type and gauges? Regards.
@Parnokampret: Hi, no it has not. the P20 has a 16" body whereas the L5 has a 17" body. Additionally the body of the PM20 is around 2,5" thick whereas the L5's is around 3,3". Regards - Axel
@axelf020469 ah man thanks, do you prefer ibanez af125 or epiphone zephyr/broadway/emperor regent? cause this week i want to buy af125, my friend told me that af125 is really great jazzbox with custom 58 pickup than epi hollowbody or washburn hollowbody. please give me advice about af125, is that right choice to buy af125. I know it depends on the needs, but, if af125 is a good hollowbody? anyway really nice playing friend :D
@Parnokampret: Hi, I never played the af125 but I have made good experiences with the following Ibanez guitars: JSM100 and PM20. Both have the super 58 pickups which sounds great. Before choosing an epiphone I would choose the Ibanez. Keep swinging - Axel
Beautiful playing. I've been looking for an amp for my L-4, and have been thinking of a Deluxe Reverb, but this tone is beautiful. Just wondering if you can share any experiences of different amps to suit an archtop? Also, what strings are you using? Thanks.
@L4CESN: Thanks for your compliment. I use both worlds: a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for the tube world and a Henriksen Jazz amp for the transistor section. To my mind the Henriksen is best for a classical clean Jazztone. It is light and easy to use, just your amp and your guitar and go. The Fender is great if you are using pedals in front of it. I use Thomastik Infeld JS112 (flat wounds) on my L5 and my Ibanez JSM. Keep swinging - Axel
Hi Axel :-) Really nice playing!! Tell me, Axel, How does that baby sound acoustically?? Can it be used unplugged as an acoustic guitar, as well as an electric??
@baeh123456: Hello Tony, with that original abr-tune-o-matic-bridge it sounds not good. After replacing the metal-bridge by an ebony-bridge the acoustic sound became much better. You can play the L5 now unplugged for training at home. If you play with a band you have to amplify it. I can send you an mp3-file (peace from horace silver) where the studio-guy recorded the L5 with acoustic and electric signals. Regards - Axel
@GuyKornowski: Thanks for your compliments at first. I love the Henriksen very well because it is light, loud and clean. For me it is the more modern Polytone. If you are a typical "tube player" you won't like it, otherwise it is fantastic. I recommend the 112 because it has more depth than the 110. If you like to experience with different speaker cabinets the convertible will be perfect. I bought the 112 combo which is perfect for me.
LG- Gianni: gfazzone@gmx.net
I will download the music and try to learn it watching you also, while stuck in an hotel up in the mountains, since my kid has the flu....Ciao, Robert

Just a technical question : do you use your right hand pinky finger when you play chords in between the single note soloing?

What year is your L-5? I noticed the color is very peculiar, is it wine?? I love it.
I have looked for it online to no avail.

Axel, would you feel like telling me what scales are you thinking while improvising?
You do not have to....if you do not like the idea.
Grazie,
Ciao,
Roberto
rpagnotta56 1 year ago
@rpagnotta56: There is nothing special, just the normal scales like:
Em7b5 A7b9 Dm7 D7b9 (Think Fmaj or d aeolian and a c# an A7 => AHMV; D HMV with a f# on D7b9 then leads to Gm)
Gm7 C7 Fj7 Em7b5 A7 (Think Fmaj and again A HMV over A7)
Dm7 Gm7 Bb7 Em7b5 A7 (Fmaj on Dm and Gm, Bb mixo #11 on Bb7; Em7b5 A7 see above)
Dm G7#11 Em7b5 A7b9 (G mixo #11 on G, other cords like above)
axelf020469 1 year ago
@rpagnotta56: In addition I like to play arpeggios in between, these are normally arpeggios with 1 3 5 and 7.
Hope this helps a little bit.
Otherwise call again.
Thanks - Axel
