If I'll ever have as much spendable money as some men having in my country, I would rather buy one set of these electrostatics than bouncing with an AUDI or BMW
There always something better, $12,000 for the complete set up you would have to be a millionaire as you could get something that sounds 80% as good for heaps less.
@xXTheDeathReaperXx My guess is that (based on electrostatic headphone experience) the SR-009 will sound slightly smoother, faster, more detail and most of all more effortless. This is the characteristics of electrostats in general. If you tweak the HD 800 (replace the cable, fully balanced system, high end source and so on) I don't think the SR 009 will be five times better. Maybe 30 procent better at most...
How's the bass on these headphones? I currently have the K702s and Denon AH-D5000's and I prefer my Denons in 99% of music and 90% of my films. Mainly because of the deep bass response from the Denons.
yeah ... serious headphone. unfortunately i think 007 MK2 looked more polished. but that's ok - the 009 has this RAW INDUSTRIAL HARDCORE look that is also cool.
Wow. Really such a ludicrous amount of cash. I'd love to purchase a system like that if I won the lottery. Short of that, I can't see it ever happening.
Really a great and unbiased review, but I had one question about how does it compare to the K1000, HE5 and T1 in detail, imaging and overall presentation.
My Beyerdynamic DT 770's blew out when he mentioned the price............................................ Haha. I would never pay that much for headphones, but not saying there's something wrong with it, because I'd pay that much money for other things, car audio being one if I had the money. Just goes to show, hobbies are expensive!!!!
How does the SR-009 compare to the LCD-2 rev. 2, taking into account the price difference? For example, would five LCD-2's be more worth it than buying one SR-009?
Sounds great and all, but I am completely satisfied with my $3000 HD 800 (with whiplash TWag cable) and Violectric V200 amp combo. So much so, I will never consider buying anything else. I'd like to hear the Stax though.
$12,000 may seem like a lot for one headphone+amp setup, but it actually seems like a pretty good deal compared to the Orpheus ($32,000 for the HE90+HEV90) or the Sony R10 (~$6,000 plus amp).
P.S. Do you plan on reviewing the JH16+JH3A when (or if :P) it comes out?
As always a great review. Looking forward for LCD2 review paired with an amp that drive those headphones to their best. If possible shoot the videos in manual focus because that would prevent video getting in and out of focus. Looking forward for more :D Regards.
I finally got a chance to listen to the SR-407s and SR007 mkIIs whne I went to Japan... I don't have experience with other top of the lines; but those two are the best things I've ever heard. I really just wish that I didn't have to take out a loan to buy one of them, and now we have the $5000 SR009s.
Great video. I think I speak for most enthusiasts when I say we really appreciate these videos. Not only are they entertaining and insightful to watch, it just simply feels better than reading an article, or say, a review from a forum. Not saying the latter is in anyway bad (I enjoy browsing the head-fi forums and do so on a consistent basis), but these videos help keep the passion alive.
@crazynsober2day LOL. No problem! As of this moment, I still haven't decided whether or not to buy an SR-009 system, so I very much understand where you're coming from right now.
Can you comment on the comfort compared to the SR007? I sold my 007s because the pads were too thin and the pressed against my ears too much and it just plain hurt after 5-10 minutes. It really pressed against the top & bottom of my ears, and I thought the ear opening was too small. Is the ear opening larger than the 007's? Thank you.
@gli7utubeo The Stax SR-007 never worked well for me, in terms of comfort or easy fit. I don't like the SR-007's rotating earpieces, and the lack of earpiece swiveling in the horizontal plane. The SR-009, in my experience, is infinitely more comfortable than the SR-007, and one of the most comfortable full-size headphones I've ever worn.
Anyway, could you provide the links you mentioned in the beginning, explaining more about electrostatic headphones? I'm also interested in reading more about dynamic drivers as well to get a better understanding of them. Thanks for another great episode!
@brandon15926 That's correct. So if you're going to go with top-flight source gear, too (assuming you don't already have a source you'd be completely happy using with the SR-009), the financial damage might be substantially worse.
ok, you just persuaded me, one day I will buy this system :P

Spent 12000 dollars on studio monitors and you will probably have a better sound + you can give awesome party's since other people can listen too....
Or you spent 10% of that price tag on headphone gear and have 98% of the sound quality and have money to spare to go on a world trip!
