Is Randall Reid-Smith, the so called, "commissioner" of West Virginia Division of Culture and History going to be at the "March to Save Blair Mountain"?
Under his "leadership" Blair Mountain was removed from the National Register.
Unbelievable? YES!
The march is going to held June 6, 2011.
Maybe he will "sing" "Country Roads"?
Even better yet, he may force his "underlings" (state employees) to volunteer for the event.
The Battle of Blair Mt., was the largest armed confrontation in U.S. labor history. US troops FORCED the miners to return home.
The March on Blair Mt. commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, when 10,000 coal miners rose against the rule of the coal operators and fought for the basic right to live and work in decent conditions. Currently, Blair Mt. is threatened with obliteration by mountaintop removal (MTR) mining.
Here is what has gone on under "li'l-hyphen's dictatorship, as I understand it after talking to some of the players.
Nov. 5, 2007: West Virginia Archives and History Director Fred Armstrong was abruptly fired, without notice, on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, by Culture and History Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith AKA "li'l-hyphen" after 30 years with the state government and 22 years as the Archives Director, according to The Charleston Gazette.
Armstrong said his firing letter ordered him "to vacate the building immediately," and said that he was offended to be escorted out of the building by a security officer. "For all these years, I could be trusted with all the state's valuable records," Armstrong said, "but when it comes time to leave, they have to have a security guard escort me."
One thing for sure is that "li'l-hyphen" will make it into our history books and future museum.
Historians will not be fooled by his present day shenanigans.
History is about truth. That's right, truth, "li'l-hyphen".
Historians will write about how the history of the Great State of West Virginia was momentary put on hold while the "Commissioner" worried more about being a team player than a servant of the people.
I'm sure there will be a special section about how he fired Fred Armstrong and made a few thousand team playing genealogists from all over the country really angry. Heck, people are still talking about it years later.
I presume he did not take the time to think that they were smart, computer literate, wise people with communication skills and some even retired with spare time to think about history and how to write it.

This is the same "man" who wants to have Blair Mountain removed from the National Register.
Aug. 28 2010: With two State Police troopers in tow, "li'l-hyphen" showed up late last week and fired curator Scott Speedy and Grave Creek Mound's Delf Norona Museum receptionist Donna Lightner — who at age 62 was a 20-year state employee. (And a very good one.
"li'l-hyphen" did not even have the correct job description for Mr. Speedy who was following the job description written by Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Susan Pierce in 2005.
The State won an appeal to deny Mr.Speedy's his unemployment insurance based on the phoney job description dating back to 1992. (some employees who participated in the hearing even lied under oath) The hearing lasted from 1:00pm to 7:00PM.
Mr. Speedy was not even qualified to apply for that bizarre, out dated, job description. The position of Curator of West Virginia's Archaeology Collection was not developed until 2000.
Mr. Speedy was to have 3 months of health insurance coverage as long as he filed a grievance.
This also bungled by the flunkies of "li'l-hyphen too.
Can the diva "the-hyphen" sing the first verse of this classic song? Desolation Row By Mr. Bob Dylan "They’re selling postcards of the hanging They’re painting the passports brown The beauty parlor is filled with sailors The circus is in town Here comes the blind commissioner They’ve got him in a trance One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker The other is in his pants And the riot squad they’re restless They need somewhere to go As Lady and I look out tonight From Desolation Row" I can.
How much cash did someone take to keep this WACKO hyphen?
From Kabler's Statehouse Beat in Charleston Gazette, January 23, 2011
"The Hyphen, as H. John Rogers dubbed him, recently spent $59,998 to renovate the Green Room in the basement of the Culture Center."
"Once completed, the Hyphen declared the Green Room off-limits as a lunchroom for Culture and History employees. (You mean you trust musicians to use the room without trashing it, but not state employees?)"
Culture and History's "Commissioner" Randall Reid-Smith has no clue what he is doing. If he did even a half arsed job of doing HIS job there would be little or no controversy. He should raise funds, have his picture taken, then let the properly trained, poorly paid people, who at least listen to the public (who pays them) do their jobs.
They do NOT even care if HE GETS THE CREDIT FOR IT. That is what most, loyal public servants do.
Governor Tomblin, PLEASE put an end this sillyness SOON.
I think you are being way too generous in regard to his people skills. My cousin's four year old has better people skills than this guy and throws less tantrums. I have literally seen him stomp his feet and hold his breath in public when he didn't get his way. Can't believe that legislators and leaders in the arts and history communities in the state have not rallied for him to be removed from his position. He is a disgrace. He's ruined more songs than "Country Roads" BTW.

Is Narcissistic Nancy, "li'l-hyphen", now paying someone to put his useless, out of date webpages, at the top of the Google search list?
"Cultural Center to host free recital by tenor soloist Randall Reid ..."
This is dated March 9, 2001.
Who is looking at this? Could it be the Feds?
Who is he trying to fool, and WHO is PAYING for this?
THE TAXPAYERS?
