im strugglign with my bottom turn, when i take off on the wave should i aim to drop vertical down first then bottom turn? or should i be taking off on an angle so im kinda riding from the top to bottom like a sideways line?

That almost depends on the wave your riding. For small or mushy waves, I take off already angled about 45 degrees to shore, since there isn't much room/time to a proper bottom turn. For larger, more powerful waves, its a bit safer to do the bottom turn at the bottom. Less likely to get spit over the falls on a late takeoff, and puts you right where you want to be better.
