@stroud1is1loud its just that the vast majority of westerners don't know the proper ways of meditating. When most Americans hear the word yoga they think of stretches and contortions of the body when this is NOTHING what the word actually means! Just an example but ya he wasn't condescending on Westerners its just the truth that we are not born with knowledge of meditation, its not in our ancestry so to speak like it is in Eastern countries.
My legs always fall asleep when I meditate. When I get up after a couple hours of meditation they really hurt and I have painful "pins and needles" in my legs.
Thankyou so much for this! So practical and useful! Saved me much back-ache.
It was really frustrating to start to get all kind of little pains from meditation...and I new they were caused by posture, just not how to correct it.
Question: why is simply cross-legged not normally taught as a meditation posture?
this is called the "tailor" position. The problem with this position is that your back will tend to slump, resulting in an unalert posture and possible back problems. The slumping is related to the fact that your knees are not on the ground in the tailor position. The lower the knees, the more your back tends to straighten out.
I highly recommend using a cushion. It will elevate your hips and lower your knees, thus giving your back a more naturally straight alignment.
It's very helpful to hear the reasoning behind the requirements of proper posture. Ven. Rahula instructs as though we are immediately in his presence. I really enjoy his style of teaching :-)
do you have to do this outdor or you can meditate indoor too?

Ego much? Those passive aggressive comments about westerners and other styles of meditation like vipassana show how enlightened this guy is.

Posture very important yes I understand now!
You can meditate in any posture, but to get the best results, do something to improve your posture and observe the results!
