  • 4:04 That was such a beautiful melody for its time. I loved it when they remade the song for DQ VIII, for when you fly as the bird. The song definitely had the feeling of freedom in the skies.

  • THE BEGINNING OF 5:47... JUST SEEMS SO SAD, THEN EPIC

  • old games were blessed with significantly less capacity to present a particular vision or idea (usually, this is a technological limitation) as the game would try to mimic something (anything) we all can recognize, but be forced to condense it to a simple iconic representation of it's real-world counterpart (people/items/locales) and it was the player's job to make the leap of logical suspension and use the imagination to fill in any gaps. Thus gaming was a far more subjective experience.

  • @RookFrjosa Excellent comments. I believe nostalgia is a serious force in regards to gamers who have played NES or original Game Boy games, but there is something to be said for the limited minimalism of such games. Newer games can be great fun yet leave little to one's imagination.

  • Most new age games are devoid of player imagination, so it becomes far harder to immerse yourself in it because as a player, you do not have any reason to cognitively invest your imagination in it (this is why people like art - it connects on a subjective level) Current-age games generally are saturated with the ambitious vision of the creators, and that turns it into a work of art that is not subjective because there is no room for the player, but an objective snapshot of someone else's vision.

  • Ah my favorite Dragon Quest game. Love it.

  • Damnit Square Enix, you really have ran out of ideas.

0:16 music at the intro of DQ IX

    2:24 DQ IX grotto music

4:03 DQ IX story telling time

.... DAMN IT ENIX STOP REUSING MUSIC

  • @MrPhantoful at least they reuse AWESOME music! XD

  • DW I-III just kicked ass. Still have all three on NES and still bust them out once and a while and start up a new game!

  • 2:25 best dungeon music

  • @redbones01 AGREED!!!!!!!!(glad it was in Dragon Quest IV remixed but still good)

  • Stop arguing about who is better between DQ and FF... they are both great games... and series. Why not just do what brought us here and listen to the epic music!

  • @JohnBoy013 Well put friend.

  • Just to clarify:

    Dragon Warrior - May 27, 1986

    Dragon Warrior II - January 26, 1987

    Final Fantasy - December 18, 1987

    Dragon Warrior III - February 10, 1988

So basically, Dragon Warrior/Quest didn't really take anything from Final Fantasy until after the third game, if anything.

  • @IvorEvilen pwnd

  • Why didn't you include the town music?

  • I have always liked how these old Dragon Warrior games focus so much on battles.

There's a very special satisfaction in running around outside of towns until you can afford the best stuff, then run over to the next town and repeat - you get an awesome feeling of accomplishment.

  • When people complain the game is a grindfest, they do not understand what is going on. It is a game of growth. A game where getting a new item or spell totally changed your experience.

  • Yes, I agree.

I actually find it very nice and pleasing to play Dragon Warrior 1 and after many battles afford this Hand Axe and suddenly be able to kill enemies much faster.

Then you can finally handle the bastards around Kol and get even better stuff.

It's quite addicting, and gives you a unique feeling of satisfaction.

  • @Laurelindo

I had more fun playing Dragon Warrior than that one time I played my friend's WOW.

  • Say, if anyone on here has RPG maker 2000 (or higher) and has made RPGs like this (complete with Ninten graphics) post me a link to download your game, I want to play it. : )

  • Try Dragon Fantasy I & II, they have exactly the graphical style like Dragon Quest. ;)

  • Yeah, I played those, they are awesome. : D

  • Do you know Hellion? It has a great level-up system and the same graphics style as Dragon Quest.

  • Haven't heard of that one, I'll check it out.

  • @CountShadow ya because ff ripped off of dq

  • @supersmash27 Bro. FF was before DQ. DQ ripped off FF.

  • @runescapemastr bro. you are misinformed :D check almost every un-biased place out there and they will tell ya.

  • @runescapemastr Lol.... Dragon Warrior I - 1986 Final Fantasy I - 1987

Don't post stupid crap, Dragon Warrior is way better than Final Fantasy bro!

  • @runescapemastr FF ripped off DQ^^

  • @runescapemastr Y U PLYN ROONSCAP FGT >=I

  • @LtheOriginal HOLY SHIT THIS VIDEO IS OLD

Learn to spell before you even try to talk to someone on the internet.

    Go to sleep, little kid.

  • @runescapemastr actually, I can talk to you however I want to. it just so happened that that felt like the most appropriate way.....seriously, Y U PLYN RUNSCAP DOUGH?

  • @LtheOriginal I don't.

  • @runescapemastr oh, fair enough.

  • @runescapemastr Well.. I'd like to know, in all seriousness.. Y U PLYN ROONSCAP FGT >=

  • @BlinJe You're an idiot. Read my other comment, and don't post here ever again.

  • @runescapemastr trololololo

  • Im playing through this game again. I love the Alefgard / dark world music!

  • this is dragon quest series?

  • nice one, 1:49 reminds me of FF9.

  • damn only if i was born 10 years before i would of been playing these game. i only startd the DQ series from the DQM on the GB

  • Well, the Dragon Warrior Monsters games were awesome, too.

  • For your age you sure sound like an old-school gamer man. and that's great because let's admit that games got something that nowaday's games dont have. Can't tell exactly what, but...

If you really wanna play Dragon quest games from old times WITH actual 16 bit graphix, ask me. DQ 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are all availlable for free in 16 bits. Too bad 4th is only NES and DS (or ps1 jap)

  • The song that plays at 2:00 is from DQ II.

  • Sorry I was mistaken. Its actually from DQI.

  • Yes, arrange version of overworld of DQ1. But you have not mistaken. That song also used for DQII.

  • Actually, near the end of the game you go to the "World of Darkness," which is actually the world of the original Dragon Quest.

  • No it's the Dark World theme, which happens to be the Overworld theme of DQ / DW 1

  • The battle theme at 4:57 is my favorite.

  • It seem Sugiyama have been inspired by the allegro of the trio sonata of the Musical Offering by Bach for his "roto" song begin at 0.58.

    Great soundtrack.

  • This is one of my favorite past times.

  • Only played the GBC port but I'd give that game, music and all, a 10 out of 10.

  • I love this game. It's so epic... so many castles, so many items, the shrine of dhama (dharma temple), monsters were original, and you went back to alefgard and predid everything you did in dragon warrior 1 and 2!!

  • the music at 1:42 gives me chills but also nostalgia...

  • @legendaryhero90 That's the harpy/stringy remake of the original outdoors, and it's hauntingly beautiful.

  • @legendaryhero90

make sure you check out the oc remix of that song. it's beautiful

  • @legendaryhero90 Love that song at 1:42. Brings back so many fond memories.

  • Favorite part starts at 0:57, thanks for the upload!

  • Nintendo and Beavis & Butthead make me miss the 90's

  • This is definitely NOT the theme song that plays at the opening screen of DWIII, at least not the American version. Is it from Japanese DQIII?

  • OMFG! The song at 4:05 happens to be my most favorite song ever from DQ8! I had no idea it came from here! Now I'm all giddy. XD

    THANKS GARUDOH!!!

  • **spoilers**

Empyrea from Dragon Quest VIII happens to be the same mystical bird you help to hatch by collecting the orbs in Dragon Warrior III. Back then they called it Ramia, and she tells it to you at the end of the game of DQ8.

  • Can anyone help me?Where can I find the stairs to the fifth floor in the Rubiss tower??

  • Best in the series, hands down.

  • It's too bad the "Waterfall" theme from the gameboy version isn't there on the NES one.

  • Year ago, but yeah that one does sound all epic and over reaching.

  • Thanks a lot for uploading all these great tunes. The length of the videos are perfect too. Had there been 10 videos of each game, chances are you'd get tired of it.

  • I Love The music at 1.42 Because It Means The Hereo revels His Idennaty I Love The Symphonic version Of that Song More

  • "It is said that thy father Ortega met his end when he fell into a volcano's crater at the end of a battle. He was as brave as he was clumsy, my boy."

Sheesh, you'd think someone would've cleared that story up a bit to make it seem more noble. Good battle music, though. Hehe, Beavis & Butthead.

  • Did Beavis and Butthead actually make reference to this game?

Are there any other TV/movie references to Dragon Quest?

  • Naw...well, not that I know of. In the video, the player names his characters Beavis & Butthead. Oh, & Gwar rules!

  • No, nooo... The player just gave them those names. There's no connection. lol.

  • Thanks for doing this. Some of gaming's best tunes.
