@lencycler1 The singer is Joe Lynn Turner. He join DP replacing Ian Gillan, making him their fourth singer. Turner recorded just one album, Slaves & Masters.
Having said that the personal synergy between Ritchie and Joe was certainly what made this performance so interesting. I was disappointed in the actual melodic contents of Ritchie’s solo playing; that his solo went too much astray from the standard “Made in Europe” one; same to his melodic accompaniment to Jon’s organ solo. Overall, highest marks on excitement, average marks on Ritchie’s and Jon’s soloing.
Fantastic, incredibly exciting – as it should be expected – from the most exciting rock song ever – “Burn”; and at the same time – a little disappointing. The credits and liabilities go both to Ritchie. It was a great performance. One could see and hear that all the musicians were in excellent form and spirits. Deep Purple was always about Ritchie – the greatest rock guitarist ever; Joe Lynn Turner was just a filler in this song – obviously no match to the powerful David Coverdale.

I just saw JLT in concert this past Saturday. He was awesome -- his voice was great and he possessed the exuberance of a 20-year old (he will be 60 in a couple of months. He had ample stage presence, much more than depicted in this video. Even with all that talent, he's still a gracious person.
@felixsarahov Joe Turner wanders around the stage like he hasn't a clue, not only is he a mediocre vocalist, but his stage presence sucks. David Coverdale is a bad ass mother fucker who barks at the audience like a junkyard dog.
The Slaves & Masters album was a lot better than most people give it credit for. I am not Joe Lynn Turnip's biggest fan either but it at least gave Purple a chance to play the old Coverdale songs that Gillan refused to do. When I was 18, I missed the chance to see them on this tour in Birmingham England in 1991 as I was out at the time and my mates called round my house to say they had a spare ticket and would I like to go. One of my life's biggest regrets to this day.
@andresc228 Ian can sing this, maybe not in this key but 1/2 step down. I heard a video of a band singing this song and I thought it was Ian himself singing it. It blew me away!!!

I like JLT, but also I like him the least. All purple related singers are magnificent, everyone should just state and welcome that. Glenn Hughes is the Voice of rock, Gillan was jesus christ, Dio invented the most used symbol in the world, and so on.They were all great.
@Lazybluesband well I disagree with you. Musically DP is not a good act without blackmore and lord. Only paice left from original line-up. Gillan can't sing high notes very well anymore. That's why they don't seem to sell any records, ofc people still come to see them live, but that's it.

@mattdif you mentioned these songs to show what a big range he has, and that he can sing so many different songs.. oh my my, fail fail fail. @leppardsnake Moron. Check out DP at the Eidyllion. Gillian not only sings it, he kicks the lungs out of both Coverdale and Hughes. No wonder so many people treat your comments with derision, you don't know what the hell you're talking about!
since dp reunion whitesnake have probably sold 10 times as much as purple..compare the last records.. deep purple doesnt even sell well in england any more. . whitesnake does though!
The solo that is on the record is one of the classic guitar solos of all time and this is my favorite DP tune ever. Richie tried to change it up here and it didn't work for me. But I am still always glad to see Richie playing anytime I can. The dude is a genius.
MMmhhh...leppardsnake, that's true, I admit. The Sabbah era Huges was not the best period of his life. But I think that JLT is more versatile singer than Huges. And I like very much the Huge's voice.
Let's grade this : R Blackmore : C- what is this sloppy solo ? JL Turner : B+ good vocals. R Glover : can't here the bass sorry. I Paice : A- : good drumming. J Lord : B : average keyboards parts ! This is a message from Ronnie ( from heaven ) : guys, you could have done better, i think !
It's obvious that Blackmore was happy at this moment. Compare his way of moving and the way he did after Gillan's comeback...
I love this line-up, "Slaves and Masters" is one of my favourite Purple albums, and from my point of view JLT has to be the one who should have recorded "The battle rages on"
Not a great version but very interesting! I wasn't aware this lineup ever covered this song live. Ritchie's tone in the 80's wasn't a shadow of what it was by the final MKIII concerts of 1975 and early Rainbow.
Let's face it. I've seen DP with JLT 6 times in 1991. Their shows were great...Ritchie was at his top and JLT did his best. Ten seconds of Ritchie's poetry cannot be matched by 18 hours of Steve Morse's playing (Steve's a great guitarist too, don't worry). But, IMO Steve's much more the 'worng man' in DP, than JLT was.
@antons No one can replace Ritchie Blackmore no one. Jimi Hendrix could be replaced Blackmore can`t. Steve Morse would do himself justice to pick up a Stratocaster. Idon`t know what kind of guitar he plays but the pitchy squeeling dosen`t do it for me. Steve Morse is better than the guitar he chooses.
@antons Turner was wrong for Purple, more so than Morse, but he was right for Blackmore and his "grand plan" to turn Purple into a AOR band. Let's face it, Blackmore fell into the AOR thing more and more from the late 70s until he left Purple in late '93. The good thing about him leaving the band was the Rainbow reunion and the "Stranger In Us All" record. It was fantastic, and so was the following tour(s). Well, what does he do now? BN? Crap!!!!
All Along The Graveyard The Night Watchman Takes Us On An Instrumental Journey As We Listen For The Sounds Of His Guitar To Guide Our Way ....Inside...By Darrell Deese Im a guitar Player That No One Cares To Hear But Loves To Hate
That doesn't mean I hate JLT. I love his solo stuff and some of the songs he did w. the commercial/radiofriendly version of Rainbow. The collaboration w. Hughes was great, but the right man for Deep Purple? DEFINATLY not! Even the MK.I and Steve Morse era albums are better than 'Slaves & Masters', which is regarded by a lot of fans as their least interesting effort in the studio over 40 years.
colinmortimore, when Ritchie sketches as you put it, it's precisely because he's a true live artist, not someone who likes replicating himself note for note every night. Don't forget he's been influenced by Jazz and Folk as well as Classical, etc., so he likes to improvise.
Another undisciplined performance from Ritchie. I don't mind him improvising the solo but this song has so many set pieces where the keyboards and guitar interweave that it needs playing and not sketching. Ritchie rarely reached his best live. He was always a better recording artist. Always entertaining though lol
Indeed, JLT is only a "Yes"-man that did everything the label and Blackmore told him. Gillan/Coverdale/Evans, the only right singers for Deep Purple. Gillan confronted Ritchie and the label in 1989, so he was fired, as Richie threathened to leave if Gillan wasn't pushed out of the band.
Yeah you're right, JLT can sing...Blackmore is not gonna have any one in front of him who can't, but like you said he's an "80's singer" who can't really handle top end stuff consistently with any power. His screams can't touch Hughes. To compare him to Coverdale now is silly, hell Coverdale is late 50's early 60's and he's been knockin it out a long time...
Being the screams of Hughes untouchable wasn't topic of my comment :) : I was talking about vocal matters (technical: intonation, breathe and so on) and on this side imho JLT was better. the three singers surely have different kinds of voices and skills, but this belongs to taste matters...
About Hughes, I love him as bassist but on singing live performances he's not so good in my opinion... He undoubtedly has a powerful voice with a magnificent tone, but hardly catches the right notes... I think JLT is far better than Hughes and Coverdale as "singer" (only speaking about vocal skills). Being a frontman is different, and though I still prefer JLT on this point of view, I think it's "a matter of taste" liking or not the way a singer approaches the show...
I agree that vocal technique is not a matter of taste, yet somehow people have fdifferent idea about different singers when it comes to this.. I for one would say that Hughes technically is a far better singer than JLT...
Well, I saw coverdale twice last year and thought he was great... But then again, coverdale and hughes are my favorite singers of all time.... (but I really like JLT as well)
well I'm very happy listening that Coverdale sang great! Maybe his wrong show was only a wrong day... at the end, we have different ideas only by preferring different singers, but the most important is that we like them all... ;) do you know if Hughes wants to put together mark III again? some rumors said so... obviuosly without Blackmore, because he doesn't want to play hard rock anymore... what a pity.
yes, hughes wants to.. coverdale/lord hasn't turned it down, they seem to be a bit intrested.. paice says current purple takes too much time.. and blackmore.. well... he's such a guitar hero (my favorite guitar player).. and really.. what would it be without him?.. but he won't do is as you said.. although he did almost join whitesnake in '94.. so you never know..
Blackmore is also my guitar god! Best guitarist I've ever heard... I saw him in Mantova on April 27th 2007 obviously with Blackmore's Night, he was amazing! And his wife wasn't so bad after all, I thought she only was there because of her beauty, on the contrary she sings well... I don't think he'll seriously take his Strat again, so no more Ritchie in rock bands :( Maybe an excellent sessionman like Aldrich or someone like that could replace him... or... Malmsteen!?!? XD do you imagine?!
@leppardsnake I'm a huge fan of DP, specially the Gillan era, but i like the Coverdale -Huges era and Slaves and Masters too, with JLT.
But remember that Huges is a great bass player who sing, and JLT is a singer. Huges have a great voice, but listened his Black Sabbath era in the lives shows, and he forced to much his voice.
Huges voice is more powerfull and have a better range, but JLT is better interpretative singer to me, and he fits better in every band that he was.
@aguslora OK. I disagree with most of that but I respect your opinion.
Btw.. when hughes was in sabbath.. he had been in a fight, which lead to a consistent bload stream comming up his throat.. no wonder he couldnt sing very well.. he could barely talk! So that was an awful period for him.. Listen to him sing live now instead :) He sings no stranger to love sometimes.
JLT doesn't have the fuckin balls to handle this kind of classic Purple shit...Glen Hughes and Coverdale eat him alive-he drops down an octave to handle alot of the top end. JLT needs to check out California Jam '74
I don't really think either Coverdale or Hughes are better than JLT... In california Jam Coverdale hardly catches any note in tune, while JLT is quite good on intonation. Furthermore, Coverdale now is voiceless, he tries to push like in the "1987" Whitesnake years, but his voice is completely ruined. JLT on the contrary is still a powerful singer, obviously with all the Eighties singers features (great pushing, sometimes scarce intonation, shouting at the audience)...
Coverdale's voice is not ruined.. JLT isnt as great anymore either imo.. and still everyone is entitled to their opinions but Coverdale and his beloved Whitesnake is a bit more well-known than almost anything JLT has done.. It's all down to personal tastes.. And that's why I think comments like these are rather amusing.. Everybody has got an opinion.. But who cares.. One should just enjoy the music if one likes it!
I have to contradict you about Coverdale's not being ruined, and believe me I am very sad doing this because I appreciate him very much, he his one of my favourites: last year he gave a concert in Italy and he was really really bad... maybe it was just the wrong day for him, every singer has bad days, but I heard that not only in that concert his performance was poor. I agree with you that liking a singer or not is matter of opinion, and in the end you can either like one or not...
... but why shouldn't I express mine? I'm not trying to convince anyone of what I think and, as I said, I'm not talking about who was the "greatest one" among JLT, David and Glenn, just saying that, on the vocal side, JLT is more accurate than the other two and he still sings almost like in the eighties... Unfortunately I can't say the same for Coverdale. If you heard him recently and he did a great perfomance, please tell me and you'd make me happy because...
... I would really be if I knew he's again the most powerful and accurate "eighties" Coverdale... I would still prefer JLT by affectional matter (Rainbow was the first british hard rock band I heard) but comparing JLT and David in the eighties, when they both were at the top, David would be slightly better than JLT. I would like to continue this opinion exchange because I find interesting, so please reply! :)
I love JLT. Apparentely, Jon Lord and Ian Paice didn't want him in the band becouse they thoght he would take over and felt threatened plus BMG wanted Ian Gillan back with all the money they were throwing at them they got their wish..The music business is about Money....
JLT tortures this song. He has the balls to criticise Coverdale for using tapes when in concert, and he doesnt. And JLT shits on an epic songs like this, and tortures such a gr8 song...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
JOE LYNN TURNER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!......he`s killing the song...........he `s blackmore`s son......he doesn`t have a carrer without ritchie .....JLT SUCKSSSSS
This is a good version, but in the 1975 version in California Jam concert, have 2 singers David Coverdale, and Glenn Hughes, this version is awesome.¡¡¡¡¡¡
live0wire i couldn't agree less with you. ian gillan still has an amazing voice and steve morse is one of the best possible choices for Deep Purple, trust me.
Turner had been in the band a couple of years by 1991, so I'm pretty sure they'd been playing it a while. But the few years Turner was in the group was the only time they played it without Coverdale (Gillan has never sung any songs originally recorded with Coverdale).
Richie and Lord must come back and Gillan can't sing anymore. I saw them live 2 years ago and hardly could hear him singing. And again Steve Morse is no good for Deep Purple he is the worst choice made in the band.
No, it was called MK5. It was the fifth lineup of Deep Purple (if you count the reunion as MK2), which lasted from 1989 to 1992. Their album was so horrible that their record label pressured them to get Ian Gillan back. Joe Lynn Turner, in my opinion, is a joke. He makes anything sound like Bon Jovi. And his "see-how-perfect-my-hair-is" look is ridiculous.
The Coverdale-Hughes-Bolin-Lord-Paice lineup is MK4. The Gillan-Glover-Satriani-Lord-Paice one is MK6. The Gillan-Glover-Morse-Lord-Paice one is MK7, and the current line-up, Gillan-Glover-Morse-Airey-Paice, is MK8.
are you saying that bon jovi has a bad sound? did you listen only "crush" by bon jovi or also some better albums? half of the "slippery when wet" album was in the single top ten in the eighties. i wish more singers were like bon jovi...
I've listened to a lot of Bon Jovi albums, and I hate them all. It's too commercial for me, just like 1987-1989 era Whitesnake. And Whitesnake is one of my favourite bands.
That's right, everybody has own preferences, but i don't believe between so many junk music, specially in Unite States this days, alienated people can hate Bon Jovi, every rock band has your on ballads,Black sabbath has some;honestly i prefer first, second Bon Jovi albuns and particular sounds but can't hate because it's rock, from Slayer to Europe,Judas Priest to Duran Duran,Dream Teather to Billy idol it's rock for the uninformed.
I was theere!!! My first big concert and I got to see Blackmore/Glover/Paice and Lord. Saw DP again last month. It still sounds good, but not quite the same.
JLT is probably the only DP singer who can get away with singing any of the purple songs from mk2 or 3 with the exception of Glenn Hughes obviously who can sing any of the Gillan stuff too, no matter though DP rock!! Peace.
man...I prefer this music with the orignial singers, converdale has a creat voice, and Clenn, wow, he sings a lot, i think that this gut did goog, bbuuuttt, with glenn and coverdale is better...
well.. If you are a true fan of deep purple you should be happy, I think, that Joe Lynn Turner at least sings this one.. And I think he does it well.. No songs from mk3-mk4 are being played today by purple!
I prefer coverdale's version as well.. But I mean "wrong man".. lots of singers sing songs by the band that was recorded without them.. David/Glenn Did.. (let's not forget glenn) and Joe did.. Unfortunately not gillan (any mk3-mk4 songs)

What's wrong with Ritchie's solo.....everything he does is MAGIC! lol....peace!
benchmat 1 year ago

I love this line-up, "Slaves and Masters" is one of my favourite Purple albums, and from my point of view JLT has to be the one who should have recorded "The battle rages on"

thorba69 1 year ago
Not a great version but very interesting! I wasn't aware this lineup ever covered this song live. Ritchie's tone in the 80's wasn't a shadow of what it was by the final MKIII concerts of 1975 and early Rainbow.
SJQK 2 years ago
Let's face it. I've seen DP with JLT 6 times in 1991. Their shows were great...Ritchie was at his top and JLT did his best. Ten seconds of Ritchie's poetry cannot be matched by 18 hours of Steve Morse's playing (Steve's a great guitarist too, don't worry). But, IMO Steve's much more the 'worng man' in DP, than JLT was.
antons 2 years ago 38
@antons No one can replace Ritchie Blackmore no one. Jimi Hendrix could be replaced Blackmore can`t. Steve Morse would do himself justice to pick up a Stratocaster. Idon`t know what kind of guitar he plays but the pitchy squeeling dosen`t do it for me. Steve Morse is better than the guitar he chooses.
oberfour 1 year ago
@antons Turner was wrong for Purple, more so than Morse, but he was right for Blackmore and his "grand plan" to turn Purple into a AOR band. Let's face it, Blackmore fell into the AOR thing more and more from the late 70s until he left Purple in late '93. The good thing about him leaving the band was the Rainbow reunion and the "Stranger In Us All" record. It was fantastic, and so was the following tour(s). Well, what does he do now? BN? Crap!!!!
IHIKML 10 months ago
@antons In my opinion, Steve Morse takes the music of Deep Purple to a different level, and a guitarist is much more able to do this than a singer@

SilverTounge85 2 years ago
Thank you for this! I never knew this mark performed Burn. Roger Glover playing Mark III material... never knew it happened. And
colinmortimore, I think your absolutely wrong, live is where Ritchie (especially in the 70's) really shows what a musical genious he is.
MLennholm 2 years ago 2
colinmortimore, when Ritchie sketches as you put it, it's precisely because he's a true live artist, not someone who likes replicating himself note for note every night.

MLennholm 2 years ago
Indeed, JLT is only a "Yes"-man that did everything the label and Blackmore told him. Gillan/Coverdale/Evans, the only right singers for Deep Purple. Gillan confronted Ritchie and the label in 1989, so he was fired, as Richie threathened to leave if Gillan wasn't pushed out of the band.

Alquanto vomitevole Turner...
iandrummer26 2 years ago
Yeah you're right, JLT can sing...Blackmore is not gonna have any one in front of him who can't, but like you said he's an "80's singer" who can't really handle top end stuff consistently with any power. His screams can't touch Hughes. To compare him to Coverdale now is silly, hell Coverdale is late 50's early 60's and he's been knockin it out a long time...
aledocat 2 years ago
Being the screams of Hughes untouchable wasn't topic of my comment :) : I was talking about vocal matters (technical: intonation, breathe and so on) and on this side imho JLT was better. the three singers surely have different kinds of voices and skills, but this belongs to taste matters...
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
About Hughes, I love him as bassist but on singing live performances he's not so good in my opinion... He undoubtedly has a powerful voice with a magnificent tone, but hardly catches the right notes... I think JLT is far better than Hughes and Coverdale as "singer" (only speaking about vocal skills). Being a frontman is different, and though I still prefer JLT on this point of view, I think it's "a matter of taste" liking or not the way a singer approaches the show...
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
well it's a matter of taste when it comes to singing as well.. not only front-man manner...!!
leppardsnake 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but vocal technique (intonation and breathe) is not a matter of taste!
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
I agree that vocal technique is not a matter of taste, yet somehow people have fdifferent idea about different singers when it comes to this.. I for one would say that Hughes technically is a far better singer than JLT...
Well, I saw coverdale twice last year and thought he was great... But then again, coverdale and hughes are my favorite singers of all time.... (but I really like JLT as well)
leppardsnake 2 years ago
well I'm very happy listening that Coverdale sang great!
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
indeed!
yes, hughes wants to.. coverdale/lord hasn't turned it down, they seem to be a bit intrested.. paice says current purple takes too much time.. and blackmore.. well... he's such a guitar hero (my favorite guitar player).. and really.. what would it be without him?.. but he won't do is as you said.. although he did almost join whitesnake in '94.. so you never know..
leppardsnake 2 years ago
Blackmore is also my guitar god! Best guitarist I've ever heard... I saw him in Mantova on April 27th 2007 obviously with Blackmore's Night, he was amazing! And his wife wasn't so bad after all, I thought she only was there because of her beauty, on the contrary she sings well... I don't think he'll seriously take his Strat again, so no more Ritchie in rock bands :( Maybe an excellent sessionman like Aldrich or someone like that could replace him... or... Malmsteen!?!? XD do you imagine?!
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
@leppardsnake I'm a huge fan of DP, specially the Gillan era, but i like the Coverdale -Huges era and Slaves and Masters too, with JLT.
But remember that Huges is a great bass player who sing, and JLT is a singer. Huges have a great voice, but listened his Black Sabbath era in the lives shows, and he forced to much his voice.
Huges voice is more powerfull and have a better range, but JLT is better interpretative singer to me, and he fits better in every band that he was.
Excuse my english
aguslora 1 year ago
@aguslora OK. I disagree with most of that but I respect your opinion.
Btw.. when hughes was in sabbath.. he had been in a fight, which lead to a consistent bload stream comming up his throat.. no wonder he couldnt sing very well.. he could barely talk! So that was an awful period for him.. Listen to him sing live now instead :) He sings no stranger to love sometimes.
leppardsnake 1 year ago
JLT doesn't have the fuckin balls to handle this kind of classic Purple shit...Glen Hughes and Coverdale eat him alive-he drops down an octave to handle alot of the top end. JLT needs to check out California Jam '74
aledocat 2 years ago
I don't really think either Coverdale or Hughes are better than JLT... In california Jam Coverdale hardly catches any note in tune, while JLT is quite good on intonation. Furthermore, Coverdale now is voiceless, he tries to push like in the "1987" Whitesnake years, but his voice is completely ruined. JLT on the contrary is still a powerful singer, obviously with all the Eighties singers features (great pushing, sometimes scarce intonation, shouting at the audience)...
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
Coverdale's voice is not ruined.. JLT isnt as great anymore either imo.. and still everyone is entitled to their opinions but Coverdale and his beloved Whitesnake is a bit more well-known than almost anything JLT has done.. It's all down to personal tastes.. And that's why I think comments like these are rather amusing.. Everybody has got an opinion.. But who cares.. One should just enjoy the music if one likes it!
leppardsnake 2 years ago
I have to contradict you about Coverdale's not being ruined, and believe me I am very sad doing this because I appreciate him very much, he his one of my favourites: last year he gave a concert in Italy and he was really really bad... maybe it was just the wrong day for him, every singer has bad days, but I heard that not only in that concert his performance was poor. I agree with you that liking a singer or not is matter of opinion, and in the end you can either like one or not...
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
... but why shouldn't I express mine? I'm not trying to convince anyone of what I think and, as I said, I'm not talking about who was the "greatest one" among JLT, David and Glenn, just saying that, on the vocal side, JLT is more accurate than the other two and he still sings almost like in the eighties... Unfortunately I can't say the same for Coverdale. If you heard him recently and he did a great perfomance, please tell me and you'd make me happy because...
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
I love JLT. Apparentely, Jon Lord and Ian Paice didn't want him in the band becouse they thoght he would take over and felt threatened plus BMG wanted Ian Gillan back with all the money they were throwing at them they got their wish..The music business is about Money....

Turner had been in the band a couple of years by 1991, so I'm pretty sure they'd been playing it a while. But the few years Turner was in the group was the only time they played it without Coverdale (Gillan has never sung any songs originally recorded with Coverdale).

What's this lineup called? MK17?!
lovroasperger 2 years ago 2
No, it was called MK5. It was the fifth lineup of Deep Purple (if you count the reunion as MK2), which lasted from 1989 to 1992. Their album was so horrible that their record label pressured them to get Ian Gillan back. Joe Lynn Turner, in my opinion, is a joke. He makes anything sound like Bon Jovi. And his "see-how-perfect-my-hair-is" look is ridiculous.
bessadale 2 years ago
What's the Tommy Bolin lineup called then? Or the Striani one?
lovroasperger 2 years ago
The Coverdale-Hughes-Bolin-Lord-Paice lineup is MK4. The Gillan-Glover-Satriani-Lord-Paice one is MK6. The Gillan-Glover-Morse-Lord-Paice one is MK7, and the current line-up, Gillan-Glover-Morse-Airey-Paice, is MK8.

ThorgarManowar 2 years ago
