Large jets wouldn't use side slipping as a technique as the rudder is a massively effective surface and is only used for asymmetric operations. Overuse of the rudder can lead to catastrophic failure of the whole tail section. I think i'll stay out of those conditions in my C172 though! 8o)

@gunny556fly The little flaps on top of the wings you are referring to are speed breaks/spoilers, if they had been deployed before landing rotation the plane would have been in danger of stalling, they are armed usually on final approach to deploy upon touchdown to help slow the aircraft.
