I went to PPD for a summer job. They looked down and were very disencouraging. I didn't get a job there. I can't image that it's at Gally! I often went by cleaning ladies at the Peet Hall, I almost always saw their strange smiles and gray water in mop buckets. I didn't think about it until several years later. I finally realized that they didn't change water every day as they should have. Maybe that's why colorful tiles on the floor seemed so drab & vibrant-less and students got sick too often?
Wow, I haven't thought that I was a "pet" to my extended family. Audism do happen at Gally in 90s!!! The head of biology department was young and taught students at a biology lab as if we were in middle school. I had Deaf biology professors at other times, I learned like 20x more from them than the hearing professor. One of the Deaf professors was in her 80s-90s yrs old. She was still very brilliant and even caught up updating news. She deserved to be the head. (Pt 1)
Hey i just watch you and star . Hey can you will call us my vp tonight i will let youy know why not who had a been suffer about aduism can put on video wiht you copy vcr ???
thanks for sharing. recently assigned a grp to research on AUDISM and give a brief presentation on that topic. wish i saw ur video before the deadline as i would have referred em to see ur comments! maybe next time.
I am a hearing parent and didn't learn about the term until my daughter was around 10 or so. Nobody educates new hearing parents about audism early on, but we know "something" isn't right when we have to defend using ASL and not opting for speech and listening, or when other family member choose not to learn to sign or when we have to fight for the services that hearing children get automatically. Thank you for vlogging and exposing the audism. I applaud all of you!!
And we applaud you for educating yourself, and for defending your daughter's right to her natural language, ASL! It is frustrating to have to fight for many of the services, including a quality education in public schools that their hearing counterparts get automatically.
If hearing children were given the same quality of education as a deaf child: a teacher who is barely fluent in the language, or an educational interpreter who can barely interpret complex academic concepts in the classroom, heads would roll! Yet this is the reality for many Deaf children and it goes on, under the radar because of lack of knowledge about, or respect for, ASL as a real, grammatically complex language and the language of instruction for Deaf children.
That last story about Home Depot and "practice" is DISGUSTING! We are now supposed to "practice" becoming Hearing? As if we can grow our nerve cells by doing that? IDIOTS!
This is precisely the philosophy of Audio-Verbal Therapy... "Learning to listen, teaching to hear". It's shocking how many people believe that Deaf people can simply "learn to listen" if we would just put our minds to it, isn't it?
Great vlog and sharing experiences with Audism and how it's still going on...esp with children who's "slow" and being ignored or not getting much help as others who's "smarter", which isn't fair. Unbelievable shocking yet sad stories you shared about other people's experience and some accepted it like "that's life"...nooo nooo, it doesn't have to be that way. Much teaching is needed to spread around to be more aware and more sensitive to others' needs. Thanks for this great vlog! Happy Holidays!
Hi DeafPoet! Absolutely!!! Stories must be shared! And you're right, it doesn't have to be this way... there's a lot of work to be done! And we *CAN* do it! You too! Happy Holidays!
thank you for sharing your audism experiences and valued it. It is positive awareness for our Deaf and Hearing community to understand what is Audism and our journey experiences. We could work all together preserve our soul/language and change for our future. This needs to be share and inspire in our Deaf and ASL roots what we have been through in oppression experiences. It is time to stop and change the system.
Hi Ruthie! It's interesting to watch people process their understanding of audism and how it happens to us in everyday life. This is just one, but there are many stories out there and it's important for all Deaf to share stories as we come to understand the concept of audism is. Once it's understood and defined, then there's something to fight to overcome! I agree with you! It's time for change!
Wish I could join you for a cup of tea, seem cool people to chat with... Yea, let's develop this chain of "Audism Unveiled" stories... My vlog .. coming up soon.
Very interesting this vlog and not alway Audism in Hearing World!! I will make vlog soon about what did I think about this vlog Thank u for sharing your video about Audism Unveided. Good see both u again. Peax~ my sisters!
I think Audism is Dangerous right now because they never show Positive about Hearing Family but I must admit to all of u that my family do same thing to me but Call AUDISM ?? I think Harsh Absurd! to me I have to say that HONEST! Sad! But I will watch this movie some day then I will make vlog what will I think of this movie soon!
Audism means oppression of Deaf people. Oppression on anyone is not positive. In the movie, one man talks about his mom and sister learning ASL and he grew up having excellent communication with them and is very close to... The video did show that positive view of what happens when families do learn to communicate with their deaf child or sibling.
In southeastern Virginia... These stories do come up especially in areas that have a smaller deaf population and more mainstream, but we've heard and have witnessed similar these things happening. We didn't make anything up.
At 5:02 I think both of u assume that they look at Deaf children as inferior etc... I don't think so.. Unless they prove me wrong smile I don't recall my former hearing teachers never did to me and other Deaf children in all my life!
Maybe you were very lucky but in our school system where we live, deaf children do experience oppression from their deaf ed teachers (not all, some bad apples) and their ed interpreters (again, not all, but some bad apples). Many other deaf adults have similar stories like that from when they were in school. It's very sad.
Hello How are both of u doing?? I am doing Great anyway I must say Little Disagree with u at 3:56 because they have lack of training also In the begining of your video so She(teacher) must be IGNORANT! not Audsim what do u think??
