@AdverbAdjective Do you just like to argue or something. I never stated that you said that the paint wasn't dark blue. Do you enjoy twisting things just to be heard? Grow up. Or are you one of those typical internet haters, hiding behind your monitor hating others who've done more then you have in certain aspects of life perhaps?
@AdverbAdjective I never ever stated that it wasn't called the Blackbird, did I? I only stated what the true color of the paint was until it was baked on at operating temperature.
@MotorCitySarge . this speech took place 24 July 1964, personally,, I believe the RS-70 was a veiled cover-up to protect the top secret A-12, at the time the Valkyrie project was way over budget and wasn't going well, this was just an attempt to mislead the general public and Air Force personnel away from the A-12, even Habus weren't awear of the A-12's existance till the" Nice Girl" fly-off down the Mississippi River during 1965??unsure of exact date.....THX
@pipercub123456 Again, I'm going by what I was told by the people working on the Habu that we supported. A lot of my friends at Kadena worked on the Habu. I actually had access to the Habu Huts with my security clearance on my line badge. I know the bird up close, not from heresey and pictures. I've stood next to the taxi way with her taxing by more then 100 times, merely 20 feet away, and have watched just as many launches, and aborts. How much personal experience do you have with them?
@pipercub123456 [yawns] Again, like I said, I learned what I know from the crews and maintenance personnel who were involved with mentioned items, and not stuff that I researched on the web or books. Good luck and enjoy your researching. Later goobers.
@AdverbAdjective It's actually a super super deep dark blue and not black. Once painted, the paint does not cure until it reaches the high operating temperature. I know the color well as I painted my model of the SR-71 with the paint, and it would not dry, was always tacky even under a heat lamp. Had to throw it away.
The Habu, it's nic-name in Okinawa, fuel tanks were pressurized with nitrogen. As the Habu would taxi by for take off, it would be spraying JP-7 fuel everywhere. They could not seal the fuel joints on the ground, but they would seal when it would reach operating temp at high speed, in which she's expand in length up to 11" and seal. The JP-7 fuel (high grade kerosene) was also used to cool the electronics while flying at such a high speed and temperature.

What was that heating experiment thing that destroyed it's outer shell?? And any footage of the missle thing that went on top of the black bird? And in the begining was that groom lake or area 51? If it was. wow that is some incrediable footage.
There is video footage of what you're seeking. It was not a missile, but a drone that was mounted over the rear empenage. The footage shows the drone lifting off only to crash back down onto of the aircraft. The USAF has lost several SR-71's over the years. There is one buried at the end of the dry hammerhead at Kadena when it released it's drouge chute up landing, burning up and destroying the undercarriage. It was beyond repair, so they buried it there, and it's known as Habu Hill.
@63gstone 'XF' means 'Experimental Fighter'. 'YF' means a pre-production fighter, used for testing operational systems, just because Y comes after X. 'SR' stands for 'Strategic Reconnaissance'.
Amazing aircraft, still looks futuristic. This was on the Wings- Great Airplanes series. This and the XB-70 Valkyrie were amazing. Would have been every kids dream to work as an engineer at Lockheed working on these. Someone would come up to you and say heres a few billion from the us government, do something great that has never been done, c ya !
omg i wanted to be a pilot since i was 6, i passed my maths, science and physics degree last year i got my pilot license now, my life dream would be to fly a Lockheed SR-71.
if it hadn't leaked fuel it would have been the most usefull spy plane of that time now all we have is a UAV but its still fun to the predators hit an insurgent!
The SR-71 did not leak fuel when it reached operating temperatures as that is when all the fuel joints would expand from the heat and complete the seal. The SR-71 would take off to immediately hit the orbiting Q model KC-135 with 80,000 pounds of JP-7 fuel awaiting to top it off. You could tell the progress of the refuel by the amount of fuel spraying everywhere until it was spraying out of the refuel receptacle. Then it would then go on it's mission, and hit another tanker on way back home.
@YasuomiMan ..Look-up "Coldwall"experiment, the study of heat transfer, the pod contained cooled nitrogen, to start reading heating transfer at Mach 3, the white insulation was "pyrotecanicall"y removed to expose the stainless steel tube to the transfering heat from the YF-12....experiment by NASA in 1977........Peace
they recon the Sr-71 black bird can go around mach 7.5 or even over mach 8 but they don't have the balls to push it that far as they have only gone mach 4.5 on record as there afraid to go past that speed.
and i don't think they can fly to long eather to go that fast cus the Ramjet is a monster guzzler.
YF-12, or A-12 was supposed to be a high altitude, high speed penetration plane. it was smaller than the sr-71. and the cockpit was slightly higher. the SR-71's cockpit was more integrated into the fuselage. it was basically the same plane.
