Even if Obama did support it, I think that in general, peoples' fear of children knowing anything about sex is absurd. Why do you think teen pregnancy rates are so high, and that kids giggle and guffaw whenever anything sexual is mentioned? If you turn anything into a taboo, that'll only increase interest, and without education, that interest will be unfounded and misguided.

And by the way - its a bill. In every country I know of a law is made into regulations, further detailing it. Something as a curiculum in this case.

13otany: The issue isn't whether this particular clause should have been in the legislation. The issue is whether McCain's campaign ad was correct or not.

You're correct about our primary education (K-12; ages 5-17) system. We rank 3rd among industrialized nations in per capita spending and are in the mid-30s on reading comprehension and math. IMO this is due to the Teacher's Union and Dem tinkering with curriculum.

We have a simillar debate in germany going on since years. The public oppinion is to reform curriculum and teachers education in universities without cutting spending.

For McCains add, it is a nasty distortion at the least and as such fits the definition of propaganda. McCain knows how a bill is a basic outline, that becomes more detailed regulations later on.

The ad tries to paint democrats as child molesters. Its undertone is no coincidence.

In kindergarden we teach to be aware of evil sugar-uncles.

In far later ages we teach the rest.

the bill mandates instruction to Kindergartners on "sexually transmitted infections". Infections. that are transmitted sexually. Not infections that are transmitted by sitting on a toilet seat. Not infections that are transmitted by high-fives on the playground. Not infections spread by sneezing. the bill is about sexually transmitted infections, not the spread of the common cold or chickenpox.
