still wanna know why ryan played along with fontaines' made up story bc if he knew that fontaine was atlas why put the dude you play as go through all that shit
You know, even if Ryan dies on his own terms, he could have easily killed Jack right there and then... has anyone ever asked why he chooses to have Jack kill him instead of stop Fontaine's plans?
@KingdomRider92 If he choose to kill Jack nothing will happen, the war between Ryan and Atlas will still goes on. Ryan choose to die free and prove that Jack was a slave, that way Jack seek for the freedom and killed Atlas.
@KingdomRider92 If you were to ask me, I would say he asks Jack to kill him rather then stop fontiane, not for him to die, but I think hes trying to snap Jack out of it, and my guess would be that he thought for sure it would work.
alright listen up. here's to everyone who doesn't understand the plot. "would you kindly" is pretty much a hypnosis.. just like the movie the Manchurian candidate. whenever the solders heard. " -your name-. Sgt -your name- Sgt marshal -your name-" there were automatically hypnotized. Jack was biologically engineered in rapture. he was born there. he was there from the start. so whenever you say "would you kindly" he has no choice but to obey.
I'm playing this game for a week now, i got to this scene yesterday and I must say its incredibly good!
Just a question: I bought the original copy but I don't know why are the words "would you kindly" written in BLACK. Maybe the developers changed it......
Would you kindly head to Ryan's office and kill the son of a bitch!?
After hearing that one line, my mind was blown, my view on video games as a story telling medium was shaken, and Bioshock became one of my favorite games.
I remember when they where explaining the "would you kindly" thing and right there a flood of understanding came through me that i wasnt really getting help on how to solve shit, i was told to do so.It also explained the chain tattoo on your wrist.Though it was just a tat but in a way it was telling you the whole time you where a slave and you where just too stupid to realize it.That pissed me off (in a good way)something a game has never done to me til Bioshock.

Guys, making a comment starting with "would you kindly" and some half-ass attempt at a clever joke is not only shitty and unfunny, but it's also unoriginal as hell.
Would you kindly turn around and watch the machine instead of the door? The machine is far more interesting and animated than the static door that was just sitting there.
Suchong put it in him as a mental trigger. Its never explained precisely how.
I love how this is pretty much the only cutscene in the entire game that you can't control at all, as if to emphasize that you actually have no control over Jack's actions.
To date it is the most surprising and best 'twist' I have seen in a game, especially considering its a FPS. Even better is playing the game through a second time and realizing when Atlas says 'Would you kindly' and when he doesn't.
Like he doesn't say 'Would you kindly kill the little sister,' pretty much the only constant decision the player can make.
The KOTOR twist certainly is gaming history, but unfortunately, as often happens with twists, you read about them when simply looking into buying the game.
Suffice to say, it lessened the experience for me.
Wouldn't it be great if, just to piss the game off, when atlas said to put the genetic key into the machine, you didn't and decided to wait there forever! Fantastic game btw!
You have to hand it to Ryan, although he is killed, he retains his principles and dies on his own terms. He dies free and you remain a slave, so in a way, he still wins.
While I believe it's a brilliant game, I think the "would you kindly" plot twist is a bit over-rated. Besides a difference in presentation, the plot twist is virtually identical to that of System Shock 2, with Shodan posing as Janice Polito.
The reason the player got to this point was due to the game's linearity. Essentially the game is saying "The main antagonist mind-controlled you!" Erm, not really, "obeying" him was the only way of progressing the story so I didn't really have a choice!
@MrNinjenius That's the point, when Fontaine mentions that he was controlling you, he's not referring to the character, he's referring to YOU, the player. It's a commentary on video game logic, the only way you can progress is by obeying Fontaine, just as Jack must obey him. How many times in a game has someone simply told you to do something (even in games where choice is present, such as quests in RPGs) and you've done it without a second thought?
@zexionswisdom That is just what he meant.. That decision would have been your "own" as you think. In the end, it would be same.. Obeying. Not chosing. Being slave. You cant deny.. Andrew got great point in his words
@Incorected I always thought that Ryan knew he was going to die, because no matter what, Atlas would keep telling his slave (you), to kill him. So, Ryan demanded it because he wanted to die on his own terms, not by Atlas' command.
@Incorected I suppose he could, but as soon as you enter this level and Ryan sees you through the cameras for the first time, he discovers that Jack (you, the player) is is son. Perhaps he didn't have the heart to turn his own son into a slave, or he was caught off guard by discovering that his own son is being controlled to kill him.

Metal Gear Solid, where Master McDonnell Miller turned out to be Liquid Snake... Again, great story, just not the best I've played.
@MegaIsraelites Yup, if you play again, you can note this annoying phrase again and again. And you REALLY want to kill Fountane. His bloody Athlas... I didn't believe him anyway.
I just got this game, it's amazing so far, the storyline, the characters, the action, everything is great. I love that scene with Dr. Steinman and he says "he is ugly UGLY UGLY UGLY!!!!!!!" ROFL
