It's this attitude that's really hurting opera today. Instead of listening to the music and accepting a fabulous singer and a good actress for whatever vessel she comes in, people are kicking up a fuss that the singers aren't hot enough, so places like the Met go out of their way to hire bad singers because they have a good bust. And so opera is now more about the appearance rather than the music, and it is killing opera as an art form.
Appreciate her for her music, the body is irrelevant.
Yes, I agree with you. It is not the body but the voice. Opera is no longer the art is used to be! This women has a fabulous voice and she is beautiful too!
i agree with you. but it's fact, that today there are many singers who have a great voice + the are looking good. so it's a cliché that opera singers usually are fat... for me the perfect opera is a mixture of good music and entertaining action on stage. and that means, to be honest, that i prefer good looking singers who also can sing.
@aetty90 Opera is the most complete art form in that it pulls from every aspect of the art world (music, acting, visual etc.) and I agree this woman could not play Violetta. I agree with you 100%! We need to be more aware of opera as a complete art form, and not focus on one aspect. I think people are taking this too far and still casting people like Netrebko, who while she's got the notes and the tits, hasn't got an ounce of artistry in her body. Just somethingi to be careful of.
@delyshBB I know what I say about Voigt, she is still pretty good, but we lost one of the most lush and vibrant Wagnarian voices of our generation when she lost the weight. Not that she's still not good, but what she was was other worldly

singeril u don't have a clue.the other singers here are fine but held sounds like a light lyric here,held back instead of a helden baritone.i've heard him sing much better,hopefully he only had a bad day.washington already has a dutchman much better than held.his name is jason stearns.too bad they don't give him the opportunity.he would sing held to the wall.
Held has been singing for a long time-great reviews all over the world-highly recognized in this rep. As I said before, it's nice to hear the rep sang so lyrically rather than barked as is so often the case. I think that's one of the reasons he's had such longevity in his career--I see no reason why he won't be around for a long time--Definitely not a "light lyric" voice. He wouldn't be singing this rep as long as he has and in all these places if that was the case. Also, a very fine actor.
Held is a very sweet man to. Very humble my dad is friends with him and you would never think that he was such a well known and amazing singer because he's a very sweet guy.

I'm not sure what they are singing about while they're drinking, but that is definitely the best dance in an opera I've ever seen. I LOVE IT!
