a: the tape will make it not work the best, the cake needs to be able to get to all of the mentos easily

b: ANY type of carbonated soda will work, diet coke is just good because its not as sticky, you want the pressure to build up as much as possible ebfore it hits somthing(aka the shaking) but if you do it too much, it CAN blow up in your hand and cause some serious injurys(ie, broken fingers)
